When I walked in, the smell of the place was good with a clean and tasty aroma from the kitchen. There are lots of wooden fixures in the place with a mild darker lighting. I tried 2 of the beers: the Lompico Gold IPA was average, medium bodied with a semi-harsh finish; the Last Chance Stout had a good dark flavor, strong, and creamy (8%). Overall I would rate this establishment is basic and average, but worth the stop if you happen to be there.

This was a fun, quirky find. While passing through Boulder Creek CA noticed and thought I'd stop in. It was later Saturday afternoon, and they were out of 2 of their 5 beers - an odd way to start a long weekend. The only things on tap were a pale ale, a winter warmer and porter. The pale ale was OK, similar to a wit. The porter was good, but nothing particularly memorable. The staff and other mates at bar, though were what made this a fun, interesting, quirky, good pit stop.

I really wanted to like this place. Based on the reviews of others I was expecting something great. But .. hmm, not so great.
Three beers on tap, their signature Redwood Ale, a wheat and a stout. The Redwood was decent but nothing spectacular, pretty much what you'd expect from a red ale. The wheat was basically flavorless.
Food wise, my fish and chips were fantastic. The chips are especially good. My companion ordered the tri tip steak which he enjoyed, however his cheesy potatoes were cold. We sent them back and got another order that were just as cold. They offer home made desserts and we split a chocolate brownie with ice cream that was quite tasty.
Our waiter spent most of the evening hovering around our table which was a little disconcerting.
To sum up, if I lived in Boulder Creek I'd definitely visit here again; however the trip from San Jose isn't worth it.

I live in the Santa Cruz Mtns and have been going to this place for about twelve years now. The brewer is competent and periodically adventurous. The place is pure Boulder Creek hippy redneck chic, certainly a good thing. It's like Ken Kesey might walk through the door with some biker babe in arm. The best beers are the stout, the IPA, and the barleywine when available. Recently had the new pale ale, nice crisp hoppy attack but a little light on the finish. Frankly, though, after a day hiking in the redwood forest you just want a few cold ones in a real human place. It's for real. As for food, they don't mess up anything fried.

It's too bad the beer selection isn't as diverse as the food menu but, considering this is virtually the only place within a ten mile or so circle, Boulder Creek BC serves its purpose. And after hiking around Big Basin State Park, it worked for me. Had the place to myself for awhile mainly because a lot of the locals didn't get the word on the time change, including the bartendress who was still in the process of setting up. She had time to pour me a pint of the Lompico Gold IPA (6.6%) while getting the stools off the tables. Not much of an IPA fan but it was a good start to the visit. While waiting for my burger and wedge fries, had a pint of the Redwood Ale (5.5%). It was as dark as redwood forest but seemed to lack any life. Rounded out my stay with a pint of the Black Dragon Stout(6.2%). Definitely the best of the three I tried. From start to finish it was a treat to drink. No doubt from the clientele that started drifting in, it's a locals hangout but if you happen to be out trudging thru the forests around the area you might want to stop in for a pint or two.

Waitress entitled herself to a 57 dollar tip (after we tipped her over 20%) from our debit card.

Nice barley wine. No IPA but they did have an ESB (did not have as much hop as I would like). Very nice dry stout. Atmosphere fits the mountain setting of the Santa Cruz area. The food compliments its beers.

Beer selection was limited and the food was average. The Redwood Ale was pretty good but they did not have an IPA or a pale ale. Nice drive getting there from Santa Cruz but overall I was disappointed.

Worth the drive, for no other reason than the excellent Redwood Ale, Ghost Rail Pale Ale, and Celtic Stout...//TSB

It was nice to find fresh beer just outside of Big Basin State Park, but the beer was nothing great. They had the usual West Coast line-up of a wheat, red, IPA, porter and stout. None were bad, but none were great. Food was very good. It's worth stopping if you're in town, but don't get off highway 17 just for the beer.

A true mountain brewery, Boulder Creek is on Hwy 9 back in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The atmosphere reflects the mountains around. Local bands show up to entertain the crowd. The Beers are high quality. Make sure to try the Redwood Ale and their IPA. The food, unusual for a brewery, is available in Vegan, Vegitarian, or Carnivore. A very wide selection, which fits the Santa Cruz lifestyle.
