The B- Side is open. The Bitter End is not due to a terrible fire destroying the kitchen. The B-Side is open daily from- 5pm – 2am daily.

Look for the Bitter End opening in November. We thank everyone for your support and look forward to you visiting the B-side.

On August 22, 2005, Bitter End caught fire. A three-alarm fire that took 75 firefighters and 20 trucks and several hours to contain the intense, smoky fire.

They said initially to expect an October 1st return to normal completion. Any ideas where they are now with this?

Lousy So So Good Good So So
Walked to Bitter End from Ginger Man. They were closed and hours were no posted on door. Happened to meet server coming to work and was told they opened at 5 on a Saturday??? What's up with that??? Especially with the ROT Fest in town. Had dinner. Food was okay, service poor and all the beers in the sampler set were very bad. Sorry I didn't just stay at the Ginger Man.

Beer was lifeless. Food was good but not great. Wanted to by a growler for my collection but was told they haven't had growlers for a long time but they are still on the menu. Pint glasses were unavailable also but there were three in the case. Was told they did not have a key. Won't be back.

Good Great Good Lousy Good
This establishment offers a very adventerous selection of microbrews. They do generally fairly well with Belgiums in particular. The food front is better than most breweries, but not up to the quality of 1-2 years ago. Service has degraded considerably. This seems mostly a place for the "beautiful people" to see and be seen. Worth a visit, but may not be all that you hope for. But, there is Lovejoys.

Went here on a Tuesday night-the main bar/restaurant area was as slow as I've ever seen it. The "B" side was quite busy though.

Beers: Belgian-style farmhouse ale. Very good-musty, aromatic, spicy..a great experiment worthy of Belgium.

Whisky stout-WOW. This is one great beer, with some Belgium-style overtones. Very nice.

The pizza was good-my buddy had a good burger.

BE is still turning out a great combo of beer and food..Stop by sometimes and enjoy.

Nice selection of beers, and overall good quality and taste. I tried all of the beers available and all were enjoyable. This place has the best calamari I have had in a long time. The menu is pricey. For an awesome dinner walk across the street to Sullivans.

I made my latest pilgrimmage to Bitter End two nights ago (12-11-04). They have three seasonals, and I tried the honey porter, which was so good I had a second. Another seasonal is a banana-flavored ale that is so high in alcohol it's served in 8-ounce glasses. I can't recommend thye food based on past experience. Eat elsewhere, but you won't find better beer in Austin. They have $2 pints on Tuesdays!

I returned for another visit to the Bitter End after about a two year hiatus. There are always some interesting and flavorful beers to be had here and this time was not exception. I sampled three on this visit: the Farmhouse Belgian Brown Ale, a smoked porter, and a very interesting ale called Richter Scale Rye at 7.5%. All were superb. Kudos to Mark behind the bar as well. I really need to get to this place more often!

The Pale Ale is easily the best of the beers we tasted. The EZ was fresh but the Bat lager rather thin. The barman was most articulate and welcoming but the main area seemed food-oriented & we discovered the back bar too late. Certainly worth a recheck,

Bitter End has one of the best combinations of food and beer in any brewpub in the SW U.S.

Beers:

Pils-this is what an American pils should taste like IPA: Not as hoppy as some of the CAL brews but very drinkable and balanced. Pale Ale-a slightly milder and less hoppy version of the IPA-well done.

This place continues to be very consistent with their beer quality and food. Good job

I'm a local, and for my money, this is the best brewpub in town. The brewer does lots of styles very well and rarely wastes taps with beers for the masses. All the strong beers are great, especially the Wee Heavy and the Whiskey Stout. There's almost always something for the hophead -- recently one with *nine* separate hops additions. There's always a good stout on nitrogen, and the lagers and ambers are consistently good. Come hungry because the food is fantastic. Try the prix fixe dinner on Sunday or Monday. A very nice wine selection, too.

I was pleasantly surprised by the beer and food. The food was a bit on the pricey side (but not too much) but tasted great. The steak was good, and so was the salad with the tuna steak. Pints are $2 on Tuesdays. The beers are worthy of comment. The two light beers were both wheat beers, some kind of weiss and weizen, and resembled a light beer with a hint of flavor and malt. The beers did not have a tradition yeast flavor as in German weizens but were clean with a crisp mouthfeel that would be enjoyed by somebody trying to branch out from megabrews. They were more in the direction of a Krystal Weizen and came served with a lemon. The rest of the sampler was very good and I was hard pressed to choose a pint to follow up. The choices were a Rye, Seasonal Red, a Lager, Pale Ale, and Stout. The lager was a clean lager with a hint of maltiness. The Stout (Porter) was creamy, smooth, with a hint of roasted grains but lacking the astringent flavor found in other local stouts. A nice full mouthfeel rounded out the Stout. Exceptional were the Rye, Red, and Pale Ale. The Pale Ale was very hoppy, a good hoopy nose and then a medium body, that was very drinkable with a nice subdued hoppy aftertaste. I really enjoyed the Pale Ale. The Rye was also great and had a creamy, smooth body and also a decent hoppy flavor.

I'll have to mirror what Steve said below, with the addition of the Single Star Pils (pre-prohibition style) that is nice and crisp with the corn showing through. The Bat City Lager is your standard macro-style lager that is a great way for the uninitiated to start enjoying the ranks of beer with flavor. I tried the Antelope with the jalapeno cream sauce – awesome! Our waiter also brought me a little taste of the Belgian Triple that is on tap in the B-Side – this is going to be the next beer I attempt make for myself at home…if only I could get a clone recipe…

We have visited this place twice in as many months, and are happy to say that we haven't encountered the elevated noses or Thurston Howell III impressions that others have described. In fact, we were in on a rainy day yesterday as UT was being destroyed by OU in the Red River Shootout, and we joked to ourselves that if we were going to have a bad experience, the somber atmosphere of the day would certainly be ripe for it.

They appear to have a heavy rotation of their beers, as the only two I recall from my visit a month ago were the EZ Wheat and the Austin Pale Ale. This time, I got a sampler that included these two, along with Black Sabbath Black Ale (even the lettering on their sign evokes "We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll"), Hop Harvest (a must for hop-heads, and this one is a jump from their already very hoppy Austin Pale Ale), Octoberfest, a Blonde Ale, and Mopac Steam Engine (a California common in the Anchor tradition ... Missouri/Pacific for those who wonder what "Mopac" is). I leave the tasting to your taste buds -- I prefer hoppy pale ales and dark ales -- but they all tasted like beer and they all satisfied to one degree or another. I'm looking very forward to this Whiskey Stout that they've teased me with, along with an upcoming Barleywine (er, barleywine-style ale if you speak the dialect of brain-dead legislators in Austin who think people are deceived by this term).

The food is "eclectic," featuring upscale dishes that you'd expect in an upscale brewpub. We were both satisfied with the spit-roasted chicken, and you can see the rest of the menu on their website. If that antelope wasn't fried, they'd have had a taker. While I couldn't spit out all the varieties, I was impressed by a fairly large wine list that encompassed a wide variety of grapes. I don't drink wine in brewpubs, but if beer isn't your thing and wine is, you'll be like a kid in a candy store.

The service was superb, again, in spite of an ugly Sunday in October. Our waitress kept our glasses filled, made certain we had what we needed, and for those who keep track, she knew quite a bit about the various beers that she was serving. When we got into a chat about great beer in Austin, we lamented the loss of the Waterloo Brewing Company, but she mentioned (in favourable, glowing terms) both Lovejoy's and the Draught Horse/House. Based on reviews I've read of these two, it sounds like even the competition, while proud of their own wares, do like what the other guy is doing, and we're all richer for it.

I think the bitter end is a wonderful place, although it's a little too... uppity for me. I feel more at home at Lovejoys.

Anyone in Austin should check out austinbrew.com, a new site all about austin's breweries and beers. thanks!

The beer and food here are great but unless you go to the bar (B-Side) you will run into a bunch of snotty, trendy west Austin types. Even in the bar you get some of that.

The quality of the beer was spotty, the weiss and wit were close to undrinkable, and the pale ale and triple were to die for. The food at our table was uniformly quite good. A very friendly and accomodating place. Worth a look.

When I'm downtown for the evening, I always make a stop here for the Austin Pale Ale. I think it's awesome! I think the brewpub itself should step off it's pedistal and offer live music. The combo of great beer and great music in one establishment is hard to come by in this town.

Great selection of beers, but not all of them were top quality. The stout was thin for my taste. The Bat City (Vienna) lager and pale ale were excellent. The EZ Wheat was very drinkable. And, I'm always impressed when a brewpub offers a Grand Cru. Didn't try the food. Extensive but overpriced wine list. This place was full of babes after work too. In all, I'd certainly recommend a visit.

Medium upscale and trendy. Had lunch there several times and enjoyed it. I don't have the impression that beer's the thing here. Check it out when in the area (also go to Ginger Man for the beer and Sullivans for steak, both close by).
