The best thing about this place is the quality and the selection of the beer. Six rotating beers on tap -- with very diverse, creative, high-quality selections ranging from begians to prickly pear to vanilla porter to california common, you get the drift. Plus the light beer is unusually good. Good food and friendly staff round out a great experience.

A basement location packed with tourists and locals. The beers were drinkable but nothing out of the ordinary. Dinner was superb, a shrimp and scallop combo over pasta. Very noisy with a couple of uncontrolled children running around and some smoke drifting in from the bar area. Staff were attentive and friendly. Overall a good place for a bite and a brew if you happen to be in the area.

A nice subterranean beer swilling spot with good eats, and very nice servers. As a transplanted nortwesterner one finds the beer situation in the East pretty bleak, but you can at least have a few pints here that will not make you feel wronged.

The java stout is very good. It has a nice coffee taste and substantial body without being harsh. The centennial brown ale was also nice: hoppier than most browns, but still distinctly in that category. We had the fish and chips and the smothered fried chicken. Both were tasty. They have a good hot frier that gets the chicken and the fish crisp and not greasy. The room is rather louder than I like, mainly because of the music system, but not so much as to ruin the evening.

Just a note of concern about one of my favorite places. The lack of beer varieties - four - was explained by some recent brewing failures. Is something going wrong?

I am a Maryland native, and I live in Kennesaw,GA now. I would definitely say that this is one of the best brewpubs I have EVER been to on the East Coast. The hefeweissen is out of this world!!. It is in a great location also. The staff is wonderful also, and extremely helpful and polite!!.

Stopped here after the BBT basketball tournament at the MCI Center. They had a nice selection of house beers. I first tried the Swartzbier (a style of beer which is one of my favorites) which was a tad thick and overly malty for my taste, having more of a consistency of a stout than a lager. Next I tried the Pale Ale, a nice drinkable rendition. Lastly I had a Nut Brown Ale, again on the thick side but pretty tasty. I tasted my wifes Red Holiday Ale (nothing special there.... basically a Red Ale) and their Light Lager (I guess for the budcoormiller crowd) and it wasn't bad, not my cup or tea, or should I say pint of ale. We tasted the Wheat Wine a strong donpplebock like like strong beer, it was very good and next time I will have to partake in one. The food was very good and presented nicely. The service at the bar was outstanding and when we sat to eat the service was attentive though slightly indifferent. All in all I would go back!

The service was quite adequate- friendly and hospitable. They had 6 house beers on tap when I was there-IPA, Sour Mash, Summer Peach, Octoberfest, Penn Ave Stout, Cask IPA. I had the fortune of trying their sampler of 5 omitting the cask conditioned IPA. All of which were delicious beers. The Summer Peach was refreshing but not overpowering w/ peach flavor. The IPA was fantastic- very hoppy palate. I enjoyed the Octoberfest but left a strange aftertaste . It had a beautiful color and smooth maly taste typical of the style. The Penn Ave Porter was awesome, very good drinkability with plenty of chocolate and dark malt flavors. Among my favorites would be the Sour Mash. I found this beer quite tasty. I will definitely make my way back to Harvard's and imbibe more pints of the brewmaster's concoctions.
Cheers

I was disappointed with the number of selections on tap. My party of 3 tried them all. Nothing really stood out. The stout was a bit watery. Our bartender was efficient. We also ate dinner and it was excellent, but who really cares about the food??? Not worth a special trip in my opinion!

I don't know what's happened to this place. Used to go in every time I visited the capitol and the quality was outstanding. Last two trips, last week and last March, they were down to 3 beers on tap. One of the beers was a 'cask conditioned' blonde. That's like having Budwieser on nitrogen. I don't get it. I'll stop in periodically in the hope that they pick things up again, but I would recommend the Chop House or Gordon Biersch before directing a beer lover here again.

Without a doubt, one of the friendliest brewpubs I've ever been in. Something in the brewhouse was inoperative so they only had three of their own on tap but made up for that by having two Dominion guest brews. The beers however were excellent, the food even better. The service was outstanding and when I asked to buy a glass to add to my collection, I was presented TWO of them on the house. I was surprised to find out that this is one of several John Harvard's Brewhouses, because this place has no characteristics of a "chain" whatsoever. Highly recommended to anyone visiting this beautiful city.

Beer was very drinkable. Lightly hopped compared to north west brews. The food for lunch was very good. We try to make this one of our brew stops whenever we are in D C

the district pale ale was about the only thing worth while here. food was ok, our waiter started out pretty good but was nowhere to be found after our food arrived. the place was not crowded but they insisted on sitting everyone bunched in one corner of the room. this one is off the list next time through D.C.

Loved the District Pale Ale - hoppy and aromatically flavorful! After fighting the D.C. traffic, pushing my way through a White House Protest, and paying $12,000 to park, this place was a warm welcome. A very nice establishment on the corner. Right off the bat - great service. Awesome selection of beer - which, by the way, rotates throughout the season on some beers. We had an awesome lunch. I had the Open-Faced Steak Sandwich, which I loved. The wife had some sort of salad with this AWESOME sauce. Our server was INCREDIBLE. I wish I could remember his name. He gave us a couple John Harvard's pint glasses on our way out (because we were first-timers). He was VERY kind and prompt. Overall, food was awesome, beer was above par, and service was TIGER-WOODS-ABOVE PAR!
