NOT A REAL FAN OF THE CHAINS, THIS IS MORE OBVIOUSLY A PLACE TO EAT RATHER THAN DRINK. I WAS THE ONLY ONE AT THE BAR, THE PLACE WAS PACKED,AND THE BARTENDRESS IGNORED ME. WHEN FINALLY SERVED THE BEER WAS SO-SO. DON'T BOTHER.

The food is the star of the show here. I think the beers are really quite pedestrian, unfortunately. They aren't bad, but if you care a lot about the beer then take a mile and a half stroll over to Four Peaks.

Start with the good, the Kolsh(sp?) a pretty hoppy beer. I wasn't expecting that. The dark beer (I forgot the German name they gave) was also pretty good. The others were pretty bad. The food was nice, but the place has no character what so ever. Would I go back? Yes, if I'm in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way.

This is a typical GB store. Located adjacent to Arizona State University, it lies in an area rife with student oriented stores and bars.
That being said, the beers are typical, drinkable, GB beers. They had a Kolsch last night that was true to style. That, coupled with the blackened Ahi appetizer was just what I wanted. This stre enjoys an upscale crowd and would be a great place to quench a thirst and decompress while in Tempe.

My second trip to a GB. Not thrilled with either. Beer style is just not to my liking. The atmosphere is very sterile not a lot of character. I actually left some beer in my glass, I hope I am not punished in the after life for it. The service was fine. Won't be stopping in again. Rio Salado a block or two away is a much better choice.

I would email you privately however you email address isn'tlisted. If you like AWESOME German beer then you need to visit Rio Salado Brewing in South Tempe. I'm very surprised you haven't already done so as I read your reviews of many other AZ. breweries and noticed that you make a point of checking them out.
They are just a tap room and no "real" food is served. They typically have 6 to 8 beers on tap with a excellent seasonal always on tap also. The spring seasonal is a awesome Hellesbock, light appearing but with a a$$ whopin' 8.2 % ABV! VERY CLEAN! The winter seasonal ( still on tap)is a wheat weisenbock. Very heavy, more of a after dinner sippin' beer and it also carries a punch at 7.1 ABV. They have a black beer, a Schwatz (sorry for the spelling) that is very tasty and at 5.9% will also quickly put a smile on your face. Other standard on tap beers are a Hefeweizen,a Alt, a pilsner and their most popular a Marzen at 6.4 % which is my personal favorite after their Helles seasonal. Tim Gossack is the owner and brewmaster. He grew up in Oregon and was head brewer at Deschutes for a number of years so he is very familiar with great micro brewing.Next time your in town give Rio Salado a try. I live only a few miles from Rio and would be happy to meet you there and lift a pint or 2 with you. 1st pint is on me! Contact me via email if your interested or give me a call as I'm listed in the phone book. I think Rio has a chance of making your "top ten" and will certainly replace 4 peaks as your pick for best Phoenix area Micro even without serving food. Marc Dubach Rio is in a induistrial park and requires a sharp eye to find the first time around

first time at this GB, pretty much the same as the rest. The beer just is not very good. Bandesnatch, about 2 blocks away has much better beer (and similarly poor service). GB seems to be dedicated to following the style over substance model. The only reason for going here is the general lack of german style brewpubs in the Phoenix area, (although Alcatraz, another chain has them & does a better job).

German style beers are the beer of choice. They are made very well. Great location. Outdoor deck and bar area are well planned. The service is with a smile, but at times they are understaffed.

Beer seems to have gotten worse; little if any character and limited variety. Food quality is still good, but we likely won't return in the near future.

Disappointed they did not have a Porter or Stout. The bock was the only beer I could stomach. The bartender was very good but when we sat at a table to eat dinner the waitress was terrible and we thanked her in the tip! Food looked better then it tasted. Nice presentation.

Typical Gordon Biersch establishment - caters to the more yuppie/upscale crowd. Beers aren't bad but lack true character. The scenery is nice, and if you go I suggest that you sit outside on the deck.

After submitting my review (directly below) it became painfully obvious that there is no spell check. Didn't mean to sound quite so illiterate.

As a previous reviewer stated there are defiitely no IPA's here. Unfortunatley I pefer the English style beer so there wasn't much for me here. Service was good, beer a bit pricely at $4 a pint.

Hopheads beware - there are no IPAs here. However, their attempt at German Style lagers and pilseners is ok. Looks like they've got some of the bugs worked out. Service still lacks, but the scenery and lunch menu are good. Cheapskates stay home!

Very disappointed in this place. All the beer tasted like soap suds with no character. Too much of a yuppy place for me with no effort to create beers with any imagination or flavor. Spend your time at other pubs.

Visited the brewery before the Edwin McCain show and I was impressed. Gordon Bircsh takes brew pubs to the next level. The Dunkel was very tasty with a hint of chocolate. The Hefeweizen had a great banana aroma but was a little to clovey for me. The wife and I had the stir fry's and they were great. As for the service, well it was not the greatest. I felt that we were inconvencing our waiter. Will have to try this place again.

This has to be the biggest disappointment on Mill Avenue. The beer is so-so -- only the maibock saves the place -- the food is horrendous. If you must eat there, eat lunch. Most people will be able to choke down a sandwich and salad. The dinner offerings are simply pathetic. They should be ashamed. I have given the place several tries and I don't ... jeez, I just don't get it. The only dinner item worth eating is the pizza. That's good. And it's good with wine. Not matched well with any beer served in the joint.
Someone is laughing all the way to the bank...

This was my third GB experience, and the consistency (both good and bad) are starting to show. The food is world class, awesome stuff. If you like that California/Pacific Rim cuisine this is your place. The beers are neither exciting nor terrible. Overcarbonation detracts from the flavoring, but both the Marzen and the Dopplebock were very drinkable. The service on the other hand continues to be AWFUL!!! The lady waiting on us seemed downright irritated with every request we made, and was totally unfriendly. They must receive commission on appetizers and desserts, because she just didn't want to take no for an answer. It would be great if the service could step up to the food, or at least the beer.

The Blonde Bock had more malt than expected, which I liked. Other selections in the sampler were just OK. Didn't try the food due to the high prices. Service was adequate. Decor, prices, and food selection definitely aiming for yuppie crowd. 8/10/98 visit.
