Beer Quality Beer Selection Food Service Overall
Good Great Awesome! Great Great
Have made many visits to ML over the last 7 years, but not in the last 3. On each prior visit I found the beer to be very good to excellent with enough variation in the "style" to keep up interest and offer some individuality ( if you want "classic style" why bother with a brew-pub, hit a beer bar and get exactly what you expect). This time I found most of the beer to be a bit uninsprired. We sampled pints of all the beers on tap. Hops were overly prominant in all the beers except the Abbey and Max Black (a big luscious milk stout). I think this was due to a uniform mid-palate thinness in the beers that threw them off-balance. They were, however, all clean and appropriately carbonated with heads that held the first several swallows. The Black and Abbey had lovely, long-lasting heads. I found no major (or serious minor) flaws except body that would have kept me from enjoying several pints. Service at the bar was adequate.

As usual, we ate dinner and were not disappointed. The grouper special offered perfectly grilled fish, a spinach herb rice that was outstanding and a lemon, basil and garlic cream sauce to die for. The wine list offers well-priced wine from a variety of quality producers emphasizing west-coast craft vintners. Our server was trained in New Orleans and his professionalism was obvious.

Lousy So So Awesome! So So So So
After checking out their website, and smelling the wood-fired grill upon entering, I was definitely excited about the type of beer a place like this would brew. However, upon receiving the first beer (pale ale?) the beer had almost imperceptible carbonation, no head, and uninteresting flavor. After talking with the brewmaster, who didn't know how the beer was carbonated, or whether the level of carbonation was intentional, I tried another beer (after a long wait), Max Black. This beer had zero carbonation, and the manager, hoping I would have a different response, responded with, "Well, we don't brew our beers to be super-fizzy like Budweiser". I wouldn't know how "fizzy" Budweiser is, since I don't drink it, but I guess he thought that was supposed to be helpful??? The wood fired pizza was amazing, but I will not be returning here in search of beer, or good service.

While visiting the Atlanta area, I was excited to find a couple breweries within an hour drive. I walked from the World of Coke to get here (over a mile), only to find out that of the four menu beers, they only had two available, and none of the seasonals. I tried the Max Pale, and chose not to eat here. The Pale was good at best with a minimal head that vanished before my second swallow. The hop flavor was the best thing about this beer. I am really surprised that with a 19bbl brewing system, they cant keep there taps primed.

Tried all their beers (red, pale, imp. IPA, Abbey/dubbel), and found them all to be good, except for the dunkelweiss. Bartender was very friendly. We sat at the bar on a slow night, so service was not an issue. Meal was great! Definitely worth a visit, especialy if you're staying downtown, many hotels are within walking distance.

Was at Max Lagers on a cold Sunday night and sat at the bar watching some football. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. Tried a sampler of all their beers and couldn't finish any of them except for the Imperial IPA. Actually the IPA was very tasty and according to the bartender had a alcohol content around 9.5%. Best part about the pub was that I could walk to my hotel and after several of the Imperial IPA's I was glad that I didn't have to drive!!

Beer was very good, if a little similar. The Max Gold and Red tasted somewhat the same but the Pale and Black were distinctive and tasty. As always, my favorite was the IPA. Excellent! My wife's a dark beer girl and enjoyed the Max Black, even if it wasn't as heavily bodied as her favorite stouts.

My BBQ pork sandwich was great. The fish my wife ordered was black and blue (burned on the outside, raw on the inside) but the pizza they brought after that was good.

Service was quick and friendly.

I visited this brewpub on 10/26/06 and had the following brews; Pilsner, IPA, Vienna, Dark Lager, Octoberfest, & Pumpkin Dumpkin. These selections were so bad that I did not even finish my sampler. The server was incredibly slow and we were the only table. I won't be returning to this place.

Man, was I disappointed in this place. I love good beer of all varieties. I thought I might find a good beer in this place. I tried three different beers... found them all to be of the general quality that one might get from a beginner homebrewer. Food was just greasy pub crap. If you want a great brewpub... one of the very best in the country... go to Five Seasons.

Seasonal Imperial IPA (supposedly 11% ABV) was downright good (tasted more like a regular west coast style IPA; alcohol % was hidden well). I was highly annoyed when I came back the next day and found out the IPA was done. Max Black (lager) was pretty good (chocolately taste comes through well; somewhat unique). Max Pale Ale was pretty good (a bit of a flowery taste). Max Gold (pilsner) was pretty good (tart as style tends to be). Max Red (Vienna style lager) was just OK (not as malty as I’d prefer for style; needs more punch). Seasonal Maibock also just OK (kinda blah but drinkable). Salmon was pretty good. Gumbo was just OK. Service was a bit slow for lunchtime (when people can't linger as they'd like). Housed in a nice old brick building.

i disagree with the prior comment. 9 times out of 10 if you're having a bad day, you'll have a bad restaurant experience. so do everyone in the service industry a favor and keep your ill butt at home. i've been to max's over 50 times in the past 2 years and EVERY TIME has been excellent. once, they were out of stout and this makes me sad, but i'm not going to show my butt on the internet and try to justify it to myself. For everyone reading, go to Max Lagers. It makes Atlanta worth it.

I hate writing negative reviews, but seldom have I seen a greater deterioration of food quality or service. I last came here in December 2003 and was so impressed by the beer and the ribs that when I returned last week for a convention I brought my 13 students with me on Feb. 16. I ordered a mix of the red and stout, which layered beautifully and was quite good. I also tried the pale ale and found it enjoyable, if not exceptional. I sampled the barleywine, which was tasty, but I didn't have a whole pint. But I ordered the ribs again, as did one of my students because of my bragging about them. When they finally arrived, they were cold, and I don't mean room temperature, I mean still refrigerated. Before, they'd been hot off the grill and very meaty. They took them back to heat them, whether on the wood fire or the microwave, I don't know. When they brought them back, I tried again, and there was virtually no meat on them; it was 90 percent bone. For $19.99, they should have some meat, I said. My student was also disappointed, but didn't complain; he just had them box them up and he said he'd finish them at the hotel, which had a microwave. I felt humiliated after my boasting. So, they brought me a spinach and goat cheese pizza, a vegetarian finish for what I thought was going to be a carnivorous meal. It was OK, but the crust was too doughy. I left disillusioned, but two days later I went back with a few students just for a beer, which had been good. I got the black and tan again, but instead of charging me $4.05, the waitress charged $5.40. I asked why. At first she said the B&T is extra. I said they charged me $4.05 two nights earlier. Then she changed her story and said the barleywine costs more. I said it wasn't barleywine, it was red and stout. When I said that this was my second disagreeable experience there in two days, the other bartebnder said, "Well, isn't that just awful?" Then he angrily told me the beer was free. I told him I wasn't asking for a free beer, just not to be overcharged. I left $4.05 on the bar and will never go back. I went from there to the Rock Bottom in Buckhead, where the beer, prices, food and service were all vastly superior.

Sampled the Scotish Ale, Red Ale, and best of my sample Max Lager's Imperial Stout. My evening meal was their Cresent City Pasta; a nice spicey pasta with shrimp and Italian sausage. Service was great with barmaid Elizabeth who offered her advice to beer and food selection, she was on target with both. When back in Atlanta I'll be making a stop at Max Lager's!

N/A N/A Good Lousy So So
My experience...let's see...I really should have a lot to say since our dinner took 3 1/2 hours. That's 25 minutes for our first round (after sitting at the table for about 15 minutes with nobody acknowledging that we were even there), of which I heard service was so slow that I ordered 2 drinks and dinner the first time I saw our waitress. 25 minutes later our drinks arrived thanks to the Hostess (I think they got them from a bar in Buckhead it took so long). We then proceeded to wait for our food...and wait...and wait...forever later the food arrived, my burger which was ordered medium arrived well well well done, the “Chicken” Quesadilla arrived, without the chicken inside, another person at our table ordered a pizza, that didn't show up...condiments? Yeah right, might as well bring your own unless you don't mind waiting about 10 minutes for mustard etc...The Hostess (only person working I think) checked on us and we told her the problems and the tried to help out, food finally arrived (now that ours was cold because we waited for the others to get theirs), pizza was barely cooked, toppings looked like they were thrown on at the last second before the pizza came out the door, not hot, not warm... Near the end of our tenure at the table someone who appeared to be a manager was talking to the table next to ours and they made a crack about their service of which we overheard, we all started laughing at our table and he looked at us and asked about the service, my comment, "Do we have a server?" didn't even seem to phase this guy, no apology, no urgency, he just left... I waited tables for 3 years so I know sometimes it can be rough, but the first thing you do when you get slammed is talk to your table, tell them how busy things are and that you're very sorry for the wait...nothing like that even remotely happened, no sorry, no oops, I messed up everything, no "by bad”on the drinks taking 25 minutes... The only thing I can say good about Max Lager's is that I'll never go there again, nor will my friends, or their friends, or their friends...

When we got there (about 2 pm) we were the only ones there. I had the sampler with the Max Black and Barleywine being the stand outs. The pale ale didn't have the hop finish I would like to see from the Max Pale. The food was presented quite well. The portions on our appetizer may have been a bit skimpy but the quality and quantity of our entrees were excellent.

Awesome! Great Great Awesome! Awesome!
Headed up by brewmaster John Roberts, Max Lager’s is an excellent place to visit for great food and great craft beer. Four products are brewed year round: Max Black, Max Gold, Max Red, and Max Pale. The pale and the black are the standouts among the annual offerings. Seasonals are also part of the lineup, and you can expect to find two to four of them on tap when you visit. I had the pleasure of trying the Maibock, Hefeweizen, and Barleywine when I was there a few weeks ago. All three of them were very good, with the Barleywine ranking as the best of all.

Food at Max Lagers is just as impressive as the beer. This establishment uses a wood- fire concept, which it uses for preparation of pizza and other foods. Each and every food that I tasted was prepared properly and was as delicious as I could expect food to be.

Max Lagers features a brick construction, giving it the appearance of a warehouse. There are two levels, with a second bar and dartboards upstairs. The upper level is not used very much, usually only for private party rentals.

Overall, this is an excellent place for lovers of craft beer and delicious food. It’s located in downtown Atlanta, and it ranks among the best brewpubs I have ever visited.

visited the bar by more luck than judgement as it was opposite my hotel when i was in town on business. Now coming from England i was interested to try all the beers on offer. i felt the red beer was the best but they wer all very good as was the food and typical southern hospitality. wonderful, i can't wait to return.

So this is where I was headed on NYE 04, and I must say, I liked the beer alot. Very good red beer, and was very inexpensive, considering it was a microbrew. Food was good as well, but like everyone else said, the service wasnt that great. Our server was kind of clueless, seemed either new or new to the business of being a waiter in general. Anyway, not a bad place all around, just beef up the service, and some music or something, be a real gem.

I was a little disappointed with the beer sampler. The beer was rather light, dark lager and hefeweizen were definitely the best offerings. Unfortunately, we were there on a Sunday; we stopped for lunch, not knowing that they don't open until 4pm. I was upset to miss out on what smelled like an excellent wood-fired menu.

I hadn't been back to Max in a while, but it seems that the beer has become geared more toward the masses (understandable business decision). I thought all were drinkable and somewhat within style. Most brewpubs are afraid to use hops in their Pales and IPAs...no exception here. The Pils was pretty good, and the Koelsch was excellent, but everything else was marginal. Special note on the Hefe...sour, sour, sour. No banana or clove character whatsoever. It's very hard to find a good Micro Hefe anymore.

I have gone here about once every 6-7 weeks for the past 4 years. Each year the beer gets less tasty although still good. The bar upstairs is never open when I go, and it had a nice brewpub feel. The service can range from bad to great- very inconsistent. The west coast syle IPA is very good, although doesn't seem as hoopy as in the past. Decent food with average prices. Guess I'm spoiled from West Coast brewpubs, but Max is still the best b-pub in Atlanta.

Visited Max Lager's last month on a beer soaked trip to Atlanta, and while I enjoyed my visit, I was very dissapointed with the quality of the beer. As noted in most of the other reviews here, the beers are quite ordinary and lack any real character. I tried the full range being served at Max's, and I was not impressed with any of their beers. The downtown location is great if you are going to stay in that part of Atlanta, but you are much better served to head out to the Atlanta burbs to enjoy local beers at either Taco Mac or Summit's Wayside Taverns. If you were downtown anyway, you might want to give Max's a try. The beers are lacking but even then, they beat the hell out of main steam light lagers such as Bud or Miller. If you are a beer lover, know going in Max's is more a restaurant with a brewhouse, and not a true brewpub. I really wanted to enjoy the beers here, but sadly they were a big let down, very bland, very ordinary. I don't see myself going back again.
