Another place highly recommended by the Michiganers. OK, so it’s in a mini-stripmall-esque building. The place is small but has a nice atmosphere. We were there on a Friday and enjoyed the live music. The food is pretty limited; get the burger, it’s a double for $3 or the cheese platter. Service was exceptional! But let’s talk beer. Dragonmead has an astounding 40 beers on tap. When have you ever seen a micro brew (or anyone) who does 40 beers well? You don’t. For the most part, the beer is not memorable. We sampled the Kolsch, Pale, Porter, Pils, Bitter, Dortmunder, Wheat, Stout, Trippel, just to name a few, but let’s not forget their pepper beer, the Ring of Fire. The beers aren’t bad, just bland. The samplers are not a bargain at $10 for 5 six-ish oz samplers, but you get a pretty placemat. If you like flavorful, full-bodied, robust beers, this is not your place; if you plan to stay all night and drink about 12 pints, then this is the place for you. My suggestion to Dragonmead, pick 8 beers to brew well, and stop trying to brew every single style known to man.

Obviously wins the gold medal for most extensive selection at a brewpub. So many to choose from, several visits are in order to find all your favorites. I tried a sampler, which only scratched the surface of the 38 that were available during my visit. Both casks (Hemp Ale and Lionheart) were true to style and very drinkable. Honey Porter very English, very nice. ESB could have used a bit more flavor for my liking. Crown Jewels a very accessable American IPA. Didn't have the bottled product I wanted, but did find it later on my trip. Hey guys, how about a sampler of more beers, even if it means a slightly shorter pour? We foreigners don't get your way very often! A must stop for all beer nuts.

Stopped in while traveling and was pleasantly suprised by the quantity and variety of house brews on tap. I recommend the sampler of 6 to get you started. I worked my way through most of the German and Belgium brews as well as some American and English Ales. All were excellent and true to form. The Alt was very close to counterparts I have had in Germany. This place concentrates on the beer not the food but the cheeseburger was good. You can also bring your own food in or have local takout delivered. I sat at the bar where the service was excellent, thanks Kim!, and it was easy to stike up conversation with the local regulars. Overall an awesome time and I will definitely be back!

I myself have only been to dragonmead a hand full of times, but only because i have just recently started going. This is by far the best microbrew i've been in. The greastest beers i've ever tasted, only to be matched by the greatest service i've ever had. From day one, the staff has been fun to be around, and very personable. In fact i find it somewhat ironic that somebody from gpf would call them haughty. No offense to you other pointers out there. And I strongly recommend the Under the Kilt Wee Heavy. Its worth every penny.

This is an unusual joint. It's hard to find as it's in aindustrial strip mall on a serivce drive. But you should FIND IT!!!!! About 25+ beers on tap, all made here and they are spectacular. Everything a beer connessiour could dream of. Ales, lagers, German, English, American, multiple IPAs, Belgians aplenty, stouts and porters. You cannot try them all in one sitting. And these folks don't understand beer under 5% volume. No food here, bring your own. The atmosphere is not the best, a little quiet most of the times I've been here, but it's quaint. And if you are a beer connessiour, you'll find 3 out of 4 people sitting around you are as well. I can't boast enough about this place, or should I say their beer. They are also starting to bottle and you can find their beer around SE Michigan. Final Absolution is the best, a Belgian style blonde at about 8%, but it doesn't even bite. If you can't find a beer here to make you happy, you're way too finicky...

Great selection but on some lines it seems they're more interested in counting taps than differentiating the product. For example, I had a sampler of similar English ales. Realistically, keep two and forget the rest -- hardly an difference between the six. Their Belgians are the best followed by their Germans. Pricey! The female staff behind the bar often cop this haughty attitude that comes from where, I don't know and I'm not the only one in drinking circles who notices this. It's closer to me than either Kuhnhenn's or Fort Street but I wont' be back because of price and service.

I would like to point out something about the brewing staff at Dragonmead. Kim was a great member of the staff for 2 years, but the reviewer from Grosse Pointe neglected Jeff Levine as brewer. He was a brewer for 5 years with Dragonmead. Jeff, Erik and Kim all brewed together at one time. The person who stated they knew Kim was gone would have tasted beers Kim would have made. It takes far more time for the effects to have been felt. Jeff has since gone to another brewery and still regulars Dragonmead. They put out a great product. Hazzah to Erik and Dragonmead.

I went about a week ago and they had something like 34 beers on tap. I had about 7 different samples and all of them are good. One of the best barley wines ive had was there. .99 cent nachos but nothing but bar food really besides that. Im going again for sure.

I just thought I would chime in and point some things out. Kim is a great brewer and I am sure Dragonmead was sad to see her go. However she was part of the brew team there for 2 of the 7 years they have been open. Erik the other brewer has been there since day one. Erik and Kim were equally responsible for brewing the whole time she was there so on any given day you came in there was a fifty fifty chance you were drinking beer brewed by either one of them. I don’t think the quality of the beer has suffered at all. Go down the line and read all the reviews and you will find over the course of 7 years the quality is Awesome. They won’t be looking for a replacement for Kim because they have the same brewer they’ve had since day one still going strong. I recommend you read the “Going Coast to Coast” article in the recent edition of the Great Lakes Brewing News. You will see that Dragonmead got high marks. Let’s also not forget that the owners created the majority of the recipes as homebrewers before Erik or Kim were even brewing. Kim also brewed at Big Buck in Auburn Hills and I don’t see you reviewing a huge change in quality there as the result of her leaving and going to Dragonmead. EH

As a semi-regular to Dragonmead, I was extremely disappointed during my last vist there (about 2 weeks ago). At the time, I didn't know that one of their best brewers, Kim, had left for another brewmaster position. I did know that something was wrong though when I tasted the beer. I tried three of my usual favorites, Erik the Red, Kaiser Kolsch and their Alt Bier. The Alt had a very strange taste though the color was good. The Erik the Red was very weak, with no substance. The usually light Kolsch was almost transparent, with a very weak taste. This place normally has wonderful beer and I am hopeful that they will find a good brewer to take the place of Kim. Meanwhile, I recommend driving downtown for some excellent German-style brews at Atwater Brewery.

I work only a few miles from DragonMead, and began going there regularly two years ago. That means I've had two years to see the entire cycle of their beer inventory, which is an amazing selection, and two years to form an opinion. Frankly… I love the place. I'd sell my home and move in there if they would let me.
DragonMead is a unique place. They brew all their beers – and there are usually 30 some on tap – on premises in 100 gallon fermenters – the smallest fermenter size I have ever heard of for a brewpub. A fair amount of their product is sold locally at other bars, and they do a huge amount of growler sales (and 5 gallon cornie sales), but you just can't beat going there yourself. The interior is smoke-free, dark wood, ornamented with dragon and beer related items. The owners – all current or retired Big 3 automaker guys – spend a lot of time there and are always willing to chat about beer and running a brewery / brewpub. The brewers – young, dedicated folk – are also willing to chat about beer and brewing it. Getting a tour of the brewery itself is simple, just ask, although the afternoon is the best time to do so while the brewers and owners are more likely to be there to talk to you.
Most of their beers are awesome, but being a discriminating kind of beer drinking guy I could not rate all the beers that way. Their lightest style brews I find to have a slight astringent after-taste. The brewers tell me they acidify their sparge water, so if it is not phenols / tannin extraction from the malt then I am not sure what I am tasting. But with the selection, WHO CARES? Their barley wines, Grand Cru, dopplebocks, and Belgium doubles and triples are phenomenal. The best selling beer there is an APA called “Big Larry’s” that is a 7% alcohol heaven. If you find it too aggressively hopped, try the “Broken Paddle” instead.
Just writing this is making me thirsty.

What a place! We stopped there after the auto show, and had a great time sampling the brews. They offered 31 of their own brews! The beers were very true to style so enjoy. They also serve in half pints.

I have become a regular at Dragonmead, visiting almost once a week. Don't expect food there, though you can order in. The beer selection is like no other microbrewery I've ever visited (and I've visted close to one hundred). They have around 30 different styles, including Belgians, British, Irish, Scottish, German, Czech and American. My favorite is Erik the Red, Bronze Griffin and the London Brown. However, you can't go wrong with any of the beers. My only complaint is that sometimes their small batches are a bit thinner than other times. Enjoy!

My first visit to the 'mead, but definitely not my last! Can combine with a trip to canine supply chop in Warren, so my five Saint Bernard dogs are as happy as I am after a visit here! Was there early afternoon Saturday and sampled several beers. All very good examples of type, though none seemed as extreme as could be - good job with the recipes and the descriptions - you get what you expect to get here, from my experience, which is not always the case! I liked Woody's Porter and the cask ale was worth the trip alone. The sampler is a great value and my two female co-drinkers shared one while I had two pints! Perfect afternoon! I'll be back (often).

The Dragonmead has hands down THE best beer and beer selection. They focus on freshness. I have also never got a hangover from their delicious beer. Hats off. Love the pretzels. For people traveling to the 'mead go on a night when Alan Cayn performs ~what a treat. I brought some friends in recently and was disappointed that Lisa S. wasn't around to provide a tour and entertain must guests with 'mead trivia and knowledge about the beer. The current waitstaff couldn't answer my questions. Oh well, I will still drink at the 'Mead! Keep up the great beer making!!
