Never been to the Birchmere but contacted them via e-mail the other day to verify if they brewed onsite or not. Nope, the concert hall is still open but not brewing. Response from Ben Finkelstein "The brewery moved out years ago, and I think most of the equipment was bought by Starr Hill (tho not sure about that)."

Went for a show, No more Virginia native dark, Bartender who has been there over a year has never seen it, What a shame, He speculated it may be served at christmas time. Native red can be had at "King steer BBQ". Bar was overwhelmed before the show not fair rate it.

The rumor about a Charlottesville brewpub, Starr Hill, taking this over as a production brewery is being denied by Starr Hill's owner/manager/brewer.

Birchmere as a brewery has been closed for some months. The concert space is still open. I just heard today that a Virginia brewpub is looking at purchasing/leasing the brewery space, so I wouldn't delete it. But nothing's been brewed here in 2004.

This is not a brewpub - heck, it's hardly even a bar. It's a concert hall that happens to have a bar inside. If you're familiar with the Virginia Native series of beers, you know what to expect.
The coolest thing about the Birchmere is that you can see a concert while seated at a bar table, complete with wait service.

After hitting this place for both beers and a concert, I must add to the emphasis: This is a concert hall running a brewery almost as an afterthought. Only house beers on offer were the Virginia Native Red and Lager and a Fordham brew; this is like a brewpub offering a pale, a lager, and a red as their only offerings ($4.25 a pint, expensive beer souvenirs). To be fair, there were a healthy number of guest taps (Shiner Bock subbing for Native Dark, Coors Light, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, etc.). Restaurant is only geared up for serving concert-goers, not off-the-street diners. To be short, a terrific place to catch a concert, but not to go and drink beer.

The Birchmere first and foremost is a music venue for some major musical and local musical acts as well. So know going in, this place is *not* just a brewpub/brewery. The Birchmere shares space with the VA Native Brewery, now owned by the Fordham Brewery of Annapolis, MD. The Birchmere features VA Native beers which are also available in other bars and restaurants in Virginia. VA Native brews German beer styles, and they are some of the most authentic and delicious ones you will find in the United States.
VA Native brews three flagship beers, VA Native Gold(Helles), VA Native Red(Marzen), and VA Native Dark(Bock). They also brew a few seasonals which include VA Native Wheat(Hefeweizen), and VA Native Stout(Schwarzbier). The brewmaster at Native was schooled and trained in Germany, and that education really shows. All the beers are very clean, balanced, excellent versions of German classics. Nice to be able to get a bock bier and a marzen fresh on draught, year round.
The beauty of the Birchmere is you can enjoy a show, eat dinner while watching the show, and of course have some great beers as well. The menu has a good variety of dishes and I find the food to be good here, especially the Buffalo Wings. The space is huge, so there is plenty of room before and after you go to see an act in the Music Hall. This is just a great night out, and for beer lovers, the beer is a major bonus. I love this place!

I've never been as confused as I've been in this establishment. I guess you could put it down to me not being a local, but when I walked in, I was totally bewildered as to what was going on in this hall. I eventually found the bar among record stores, doors that went nowhere, and lines of people waitng for an unknown something that would always remain a mystery to me. It was like being in the Twilight Zone, not a brewpub. Beer was merely fair.

There's a new brewer in town and his German experience is obvious in the excellent composition of his beers. LOVE the Native wheat!!!! Definitely try Virginia Native for excellent German-like beers. They can't be beat, baby, and I mean it!!!! The food is also very good and they have some great shows come through. A great spot in Northern VA and probably the best beer brewed in all of VA..maybe the whole East Coast..

The Birchmere is a great Music Hall where you can take in a show and enjoy the atmosphere while drinking Native Breweries beers. The brewery is right next door, however, not affiliated with the Birchmere.

Come here for the entertainment, not the beer or the food. Last week they still had only two selections, a dark and a gold lager. The dark, while much tastier, was very high in alcohol. The food is bland and very overpriced. Hopefully with time the brewery will match the stage for first class offerings...but not now.

Primarily the East Coast's finest acoustic/folk/country venue by far, the brewery is finally up and running after much delay. Only 2 house beers (Virginia Native Gold & Dark), both strong and flavorful, supplemented by the best names in guest beers. Restaurant good but a tad pricey (typical for Alexandria); recommend the house potato chips. Bottling line about ready to run as of Oct. 1; beers also available around town.
