We stopped for lunch and had a great meal and several tasty beers. We tried about six different, all were good and well made. I really couldn't rate any of the beers awesome, but they were good enough to make me want to come back next year.

I was greatly impressed with both the selection and quality of the beer served at this establishment. From a clean, refreshing lager to bourbon-barrel imperial stout, and everything in between, there wasn't a bad beer to be found. If you're anywhere near the Madison area, you need to be sure to make the trip to Mount Horeb for a real treat. The food is also top-notch, so bring your appetite. This is the best brewpub I have visited to date (and I've been to at least 30!) Don't trust just my comments - they've won numerous awards at major competitions in the last year.

The brewmaster, Mark Duchow, is a rock star! His award winning beers are not to be missed if you're in the area. The tap line is constantly updated with new creations such as Flanders Ned, beer so sour it makes a Belgian gueuze seem sweet. However you would be remiss if you left without trying the award winning Baltic Porter.
If you stopped by a couple years ago and found the food and service to be substandard and the beer to be nearly undrinkable, then you need to come back and give it another try. It's under new management and Mark is back brewing the nectar of the gods.

Incredible beer line up with 11 on tap including cask conditioned and barrel aged beers. The food is excellent. Very friendly servers. Nice tasting room with shuffleboard, darts, foos and pool. Nice big screens for TV watching. Beer dinners monthly Sept thru May. No smoking throughout.

I started a big brewpub crawl around Wisconsin at the Grumpy Troll and I think that was a mistake. The Troll had better beer, selection, and service than almost all of the other pubs I visited (the Madison brewpubs not included). It was hard for the other pubs to measure up to that sendoff. In terms of beers, the selection was fantastic and the quality was great. In particular, I really enjoyed the amber and pale ale above others. Wait staff and bartender were very interactive, friendly, and helpful. Great pub.

I started out with a wheat and it was very good. Finally someone that can make a good wheat beer.I thought the porter tasted more like a stout. Was good.Friends sampled all the beers and really liked them.I thought the rye bock was the best.Very unique,Hearty, malty and a little sweet.Great beer!Gotta make me some soon.Bartender was very friendly and served us well.Food menu was different and a step up from pub food.Nice bright place in a nice town.Took a glowler home, and would come back.

My wife and I had a very positive experience at the Troll. We traded off tasting the stout and a brown alt. They had eight offerings in all, which we would have gladly tucked into however we were on our way to Mineral Point and just stopped for a pint and a bite. These two beers were light in body, but not flavor. The stout had a nice roasted malt flavor but not the dryness that sometimes comes with it. It finished wet, sweet and faint tones of chocolate/coffee. The alt was also wet-ish, little hop, larger malt portion and both beers went well with our food. I can't complain about the food at all. I had a grilled chicken salad (needed a larger dish/plate to hold the girth of the salad)which was very fresh, no extra funk and my wife had a beer cheese soup w/ a spicy sausage...great. Salad came with an awesome pretzel bread. And the body/flavor of our beers didn't overpower what we ate. The service was quick, (hardly sat down and we were being helped)friendly and not intrusive. It was a Friday night around nine o'clock, probably 20-25 people in the place. Overall, you be the judge, but this place is worth the stop in a charming hamlet such as Mt. Horeb. Ein Prosit!

Gave this place two chances to be decent and it was lousy both times. Had heard that the JT Whitney's brewer brewed here, but he must save all his GOOD recipes for JT Whitney's. THis place sucked. The food was lousy...the service was bad...and the beer was tasteless.

I'm not sure where "Muzzle Boy," as one put it, got the impression that this is a sports bar and that it's in New Glarus. Best I could tell, it's smack in the middle of downtown Mount Horeb. I saw 2 small TVs in the place with no sound, and there was no apparent emphasis on sports. At least he got the "restored older building" part right. The interior was very charming and intimate; I'd almost go back for that alone. That and the mustard museum, of course.
Notwithstanding Mr. Muzzle's geographical confusion, his assessment of the beer was more or less on target, though I gave them a "good" for at least trying to reproduce less common beer styles. The pilsner tasted like an American version, which is to say, bastardized. No thanks. I don't think I've ever had a rye bock before, so I have no basis of comparison. I'll simply note that it was pretty tasty but could have used a bit more body. The wheat beer was quite tart, a bit spicy and very well done -- the best beer there. The alt was disgusting -- it tasted like liquid walnuts -- but I happen to think that all alts are disgusting so I can only presume they made it to style. The red was a bit weak and watery. The stout was very dry and bitter and pretty well done.
We sat for about 25 minutes before the waitstaff noticed we were there. Way to stay on top of things. Once our presence was acknowledged the service was pretty attentive. Overall a charming, civilized place in a charming, civilized town. I'll be back in Mount Horeb some day, and I'll stop in the Troll when I'm there.

The beer selection looked good: rye bock, spiced ale, kolsch; but alas, the beers did not live up. All of the samples I had were fairly dry, low in hops, thinnish, lacking in sweetness. Food was decent, I just had a burger, nothing much to say about it. Typical brewpub/sportsbar atmosphere in an old restored building. Pretty mediocre overall, but still its nice to see a brewpub in a little town like New Glarus. The Mustard Museum (and store) is a mandatory visit, just about a block away, so this is worth a stop if you're in town for that.

Nice place. Just stopped by for a few minutes, and had a pint of the brown and pale ale, both of which were decent. Good service in a comfortable setting.

A nice place to find along the Military Ridge bike trail. Beers are uneven. Once had an obviously contaminated Oktoberfest and the waitress said "Not everyone likes it". In the words of Jed Clampett "Pity-ful" had some decent beers otherwise. Food is standard. Hope they can stay in business.

Just happened to drive through Mt Horub, and saw their sign from the main street. The beer selection was fantastic, not a bad one in the bunch! The menu was great, even my seven year old enjoyed the food. Will definatly return.

Was there last evening, had a samplerof six beers, which they did not charge for, and a very good ham steak dinner. I was very impressed with the IPA and the Imperial Stout. Also they had a very good red ale and a rye-bock. The gold larger was a typical lager and the Irish Ale had an off taste to it. Overall a very nice place and the wait staff makes you feel at home.

If you're anywhere near Mount Horeb, don't miss the Grumpy Troll. I had a Rye Bock and an Octoberfest ale, both of which I highly recommend. We had dinner there also. Being in Wisconsin, I had to order a brat. A really neat bonus to the "Beer Brat" was that I could select from about 7 exotic mustards, all from the famous Mt. Horeb Mustard Museum. My wife ordered her usual Portabella sandwich. Which she said was the best that she had ever had. Another plus were the people at the Troll. Everybody was friendly and helpful. The bad: if you're used to big city brewpubs that seat 100+ people, get ready to wait for a table on a Saturday night. We were told that we could wait about 45 minutes (at 7pm) or come back around 8:30+ when it slows down a bit. We chose to return at 8:30 and were seated right away. Don't miss the Troll, it's well worth the trip!

This estblishment has been sold. It is now called the Grumpy Troll. I tried to change the name using this website, to no avail. Same building, new brewmaster, they have a nice assortment of beers. The food and service are "great", which makes it worth a visit if you are in the area. Note to webmaster...pubcrawlers would like to help fellow pubcrawlers, so please be prompt when we notify you of a change in the business. I place a lot of stock in the information provided by my peers, and I take my responsibility to inform them of current events very seriously. Thank you for listening and for providing this forum.

The owner was bought out, and the name has been changed to the Grumpy Troll. It is still a brewpub, but new ownership and a new brewmaster.
JT Whitney's brewmaster also brews here. When we visited, they had a very solid pale ale, an interesting rye bock. They always have a good brown and decent wheat as well.
