my girlfriend grew up not far from this place and she told me how awesome it was. i was a bit skeptical because it is essentially in the middle of nowhere, but we walked in and immediately there was great atmosphere, good ambiance, and smelled great. great selection of german beers, served in half-litre and full litre(!!) glasses. fast, friendly service. then the food came. the food easily rivals any authentic german food i have had in restaurants in metropolitan cities. the food was excellent, and not terribly pricey. in particular the cabbage and saurkraut were outstanding, probably the best i have ever had. the sausages were top tier, and we got bread with a paste of smoked pork to spread on it which was absolutely delicious. my only complaint is that bayern stube is so far away. i hope i get plenty more opportunities to eat and drink here.

Just a very biased local who is grateful to have a first-class restaurant in my little town. I have been enjoying the Bayern Stube for many years, and always bring out-of-town friends here. Stop in and give it a chance-you won't be disappointed.

Finally got to do a sit-down meal at Bayern. What an experience! The townsfolk were right -- the food here is just excellent. From the Black Forest smoked ham & Swiss cheese platter to the red cabbage to the bread with sausage spread to the schnitzel to the spatzle to the swiss-cheese-filled Brats -- all of it was exceptional. Every last bite. And believe me, it was a lot of bites. Entrees are pricey but you get rather hearty servings. Nobody at our party of six could finish everything on their plate. Our visit was on the last night of their Oktoberfest celebration so we even got to enjoy a set of traditional Bavarian tunes from an accordian / clarinet duo. This place is quite an experience. I can't wait to go back. If you're traveling on Interstate 57 or IL Route 47 through East Central Illinois, do plan a stopover in Gibson City at Bayern. It'll be worth your while.

A perfectly odd place to find in downstate small-town Illinois, as farm towns usually don't have enough of an interested constituency to keep a place like this in business. Decorated like a Bavarian hunting lodge -- better hope you don't mind having dozens of stuffed & mounted critters staring down at you while you munch away. Want a German beer to wash it down with? Skip the Beck's and Lowenbrau - these folks go straight for the real stuff with BBK Dark, Kostritzer Schwartzbier, Spaten Lager & Weiss, BBK dark on tap, plus about a dozen or so high-quality Germans in bottles. Corn soda in bottles for swill-chuggers too, upon request.
Food is pricey and up-market. Didn't try any but other townsfolk testified to its exceptional quality. I'll take their word for it for now and verify later.
Service: friendliest staff I've encountered in a long time. They appreciate your business not because it's what's expected of them but because they're genuinely grateful.
If you're driving down Route 47 and passing through town, stop in to Bayern Stube for a bite and a beer. Help keep this surprising small-town treasure in business.

This is my favorite place to eat in Illinois. The portions are large, but it's the quality of the food that sets this place apart. The chef has a knack for enhancing the food with spices, rather than over powering the food. The atmosphere is unique and fun. The beer selection is fantastic. Of course the fair is meat and potatos, but I've never been this excited about meat and potatos. I live 45 miles away and it is always worth the trip. A true gem.
