Great Good N/A So So Lousy
We stopped to see there new brewery. It has a really great location, just south of town on a big hill overlooking the whole town. However, it goes downhill from that. No signs to direct you to the tasting room, we had to ask around. The tasting room had 6 of their 11 beers on tap. Of course, they didn't have the pale ale we wanted to try. The tasting room was very large, but only had about 10 chairs. It was like they really didn't want visitors. Of course they charge for the samples. The gift shop, just across the way also had six beers on tap. But they were the same six, (why not the other five beers you brew?) and you couldn't taste them anyway. You had to go back to the tasting room. Our whole group left there feeling like we were unwelcome and they could care less if we wanted to taste their beer or even buy some. I don't think I'll be going back.

Follow up to my comments related to my recent visit. I didn't mention they charge you for the tasting, and then only let you sample the 3 choices they are featuring that day. Which is kind of silly since they are serving bottled beer. Why not allow you to taste the ones that interest you? Not really a great experience.

All the beers we tried were tasty. We all liked the Hearty Hop. The tastings and gift shop area could have been a better experience with a more knowledgable person in charge.

I toured them recently, with a tasting, three pints at local pubs, and a bottle of the Belgian Red to take home to NE.

I loved the Fat Squirrel, Uff-Da! Bock, and Wisconsin Belgian Red. The Spotted Cow was excellent for a lighter beer, well-balanced. I was less than impressed with the Snowshoe Red Ale.

Had a nice chat with Dan while I was touring. He was terribly approachable, and I wish the Carey's all the best as they open their new brewery.

I've heard so many great things about New Glarus, but unfortunately couldn't make it to the brewery. I did purchase a six pack of Spotted Cow and a six pack of Naked. I found both to be lacking in flavor that I would expect from a micro brewery that is rated so highly. I'll search out some of their other beers on my next visit north to see if they are better than the two that I had.

The New Glarus Spotted cow ia an excellent beer with great flavor, I only wish i could get it at the local grocery store. By far one of the best beers i've had.

Great brewing company, but they do not distribute the great beers to Illinois so you need to trek to New Glarus. I love all the beer so it's worth the drive to stock up

I managed to score a couple of 750's of Raspberry Tart thanks to a very good friend. This "Wisconsin champagne" is a wonderful beer in the best Belgium style. Can't wait to get some of the other brews from New Glarus. Great job.

A long trip to Wisconsin mandated a return home with two cases of their 12-oz bottles and several of their 750-ml fruit beers. Not a dud in the bunch, although a couple are "just not my style"--I guess to be expected in German Wisconsin. The Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart are way off in their own league, not at all comparable to the easier-drinking "regular" beers. Kudos to the Oktoberfest and Native Ale (the latter a dark brown but bright ale, smooth as a lager but flavorful); the Fat Squirrel hazelnut Nut Brown won over this non-hazelnut-liking drinker.

Let me start off by saying this is one of the top-tier midwest breweries, as others have said here. There's not much more I can add.

Hey Enemy, I hear they pulled out not necessarily because demand was outstripping supply but because their Illinois/Chicago sales were well off-pace of their Wisconsin/Madison sales and they decided it wasn't worth the extra distribution and licensing expenses to do business here anymore. So they've decided to refocus on their core constituency and primary source of revenue: Wisconsin in general and the Madison area in particular.

Finally got there during business hours. I will start by saying, if you are coming to the brewery to sample, don't get too excited. They charge a very reasonable $3 for 3, 4-5 ounce samples. You also get to keep the engraved glass. You are allowed only 1 round of samples. I was able to sample the Spotted Cow, quite light, refreshing. Corn in this beer? Next tried the Brown Squirrel, brown ale. Delicous. This is what I think a brown ale should taste like. Lastly I tried the Uff Da bock. This beer was nice and malty, with slight alcohol. They do have a wide variety of beers available for to go sales. I would guess at least 12 - 16 beers. As their beers are not available in Michigan, I spent a fortune. I was even lucky enough to purchase the Wisconsin Red in 12 ounce bottles. Keep up the fantastic job.

Well, so much for my earlier praise that they decided to crack the Illinois market. Rumor has it they have since reverted to their earlier promise not to sell outside of Wisconsin. Rumor further holds that demand was outstripping capacity and they were concerned about the integrety of their product. Let's hear it for a craft brewer that places the quality of its product over an extra buck or two. For that reason, I'm glad they don't sell in my state anymore, and I'll gladly go out of my way to get it.

I don't think New Glarus gets recognized enough for their outstanding beers. Stopped by the brewery the other day and picked up some beer to go, and also took the self-guided tour. Nice, bucolic setting for the brewery and the beers are, again, outstanding. The Uff-Da is the best bock in the country, IPA is fresh and tasty, the Spotted Cow is a good beer for a hot summer day, Solstice Wheat is also very tasty. My favorite is the Copper Kettle Weiss, which I haven't seen for a while, but is one of my top 10 favorite beers around the country. What a great place this is.

I agree with all those that say this is one of the best in the US. Rarely a bad beer and really a variety of styles. The new "Uplugged" series have been super! Stout is great; bock is excellent; love the Norski; Staghorn better in some years than others ('02 was 5 stars!) Their tour is not so hot - all tasting out of the bottle! But New Glarus is a nice place to putz around and you can find their beer on tap at the Swiss restaurant in town.

For those who may care, the Belgian Red & Raspberry Tart regularly win medals at the GABF (see www.beertown.org/GABF/winners.htm). Many of the other beers have also won medals in the past. Michael Jackson (the famed beer critic) also mentioned the Belgian Red as one of America's Top 10 Beers -- as always, of course, judge for yourself!

As others have said, the beers here are generally excellent. While best known for their fruit lambics (Belgian Red & Raspberry Tart), they make some other very good beers as well. The Coffee Stout is a rich, full-flavored stout, and the Hop Hearty IPA is a nice strongly hopped pale ale, one of the better ones I've had (and I've tried dozens & dozens!). The Spotted Cow is a very drinkable, mild ale that is a good starting point (IMHO) for people new to craft brews or for when you're in the mood for a light yet flavorful beer. The Weiss beers & the Uff-da Bock are pretty tasty too. If at all possible, take the brewery tour and pick up some fresh beer right at the brewery!

One of the best breweries in America (and the world for that matter). Well known for their fruit beers (Cherry scored a 99 of a posible 100 and Raspberry a 98). While I was never a fruit beer fan, these are soooo much different with a great underlying sour ale base. Other excellent brews also excellent. If you have the patience to cellar a few bottles of the Wisconsin Red (Cherry) or Raspberry Tart, do it. I've only been able to make a year so far but they do improve with age...if that were possible!

While I didn't visit the brewery, I was able to sample a few selections on a recent trip to Wisc. The Uff-da and Stout were excellant. I didn't much care for the Spotted Cow but it did seem like it would please plenty of others that don't like a lot of hops or malt

Simply one of the best midwest breweries. Thank God they finally decided to sell in Illinois. Their Copper Kettle Wheat is great, their Coffee Stout is, well, coffee-tasting, their Edel-Pils is outstanding, the raspberry tart puts that Lindemen's soda-wannabe stuff to shame... I could go on forever. The Uff-Da Bock is one of the best beers of any style made in any part of the world. Wow, is that stuff to die for. I don't know if they still make the apple ale, but when I lived in Wisconsin in the mid-90's, I remember it being a hit-or-miss affair. Apparently it didn't keep very well on the shelves and I would frequently encounter a rotten bottle of the stuff. Yuk! The Zwickel is weird. Other than that, awesome products.

Manages to reamin respecable amdist the New Glaurus kitsch and, except for the Spotted Cow disaster, makes exceptional brews - the bock and the coffee stout, especially.

I also believe this brewery to be one of the finest in the nation! Every beer made here is great! It's no surprise to see that this brewery was selected as one of the ten best in the nation for 2001(http://www.americasbestonline.com/brewery.htm.).

Ok a friend of mine brought me 12 Hearty Hop to try. I am ready to kill him because I have to drive about 1000 miles to get any more of it. A truly great IPA. It appears I will have to schedule a trip to Wisconsin to try the rest of their brews and get some mor Hearty Hop. I figure it's worth it!!!!

Without question, one of the best micros in the nation. Competes head-to-head w/ Capital Brewery for Midwest Best. Phenomenal syling, especially their lambics (open-fermenation in wood vats) and their Solstice Wheat, which is best weizen style I've had domestically since the Brooklyn-brand wheats in NYC
