This place was amazing! They seated my group of 23 people easily, and the service was great!! The food was incredible, and the band was rockin'! I had the house burger, and it was perfect. I tried the Alewife Ale and the Ex-Wife Bitter, which was delicious. I highly recommend this place. Can't wait to go back!

I love this pub!! The seasonal beer is outstanding and the service is just as good. The kitchen is a little small and sometimes it takes a little while to get your food but it is well worth the wait, plus it give you mor etime to sample the beer!

This is a nice little brewery in the restored (so I'm told) downtown area of Hallowell. The super lager came out the day before we arrived and it's a fine beer. The food is fantastic, in fact most of the place was raving about the ribs (which sadly we did not order). Very friendly place.

The Liberal Cup is an amazing establishment. The food and beer are awesome and the staff is very friendly and fun. Trivia nights on Tuesday are an especially good time and Geoff is incredible!

Having known Jeff since his King Eider days, I have been quite impressed with what he has done for Hallowell with the Liberal Cup. Great pub food and a freindly atmosphere. It can get quite crowded at times but thatt's what pubs are all about. Their IPA is one of the very best in New England.

Found the Liberal Cup through this very website and wasn't disappointed. The selection wasn't huge, but there was at least one of anything you could want, and they tasted delicious. I also felt very comfortable with the pub-style atmosphere of the bar. Being from out of town, and not impressed with the food selection in Augusta, we spent a great evening in the bar drinking, eating, and watching football. There's also a decent wine selection, so if you and your partner have differing opinions about your drink of choice, you can both leave happy.

Was at the cup before Thanksgiving and they had brewed their first Porter. It was the best porter I have ever had. their IPA is the best I've ever had as well. Their is talk of them coming out with a cask-conditioned porter. Can't wait.

I actually went to this place twice while in Maine...the second time the service was only a bit better. The first time I went was a Tuesday--which I found out later was Trivia night. The bar was full--2 or 3 deep and a line for a table. I fought my way through the crowd to get my name on the list. I was by myself and they refused to even take my name for a table for one. They said to go to the bar. I asked her where she thought I would be able to eat there. She told me that they serve the same menue at the bar. I guess she thought I would like to eat and drink standing up. Thinking that someone might eventually leave I went to the bar. I stood there while I drank to of their "liberal" pints and no one moved so I moved on. A few days later I was back in Augusta so I thought I would give them another try. I was hotter than hell outside and I feared the air conditioned bar would be full again. It wasn't. I actually got a seat. But the bartender would just disapear. People came in and would set at the bar waiting for service and then leave. Over the course of the two visits I had the Summer bitter Summer not, Tar Box Cream stout, Dummer's Lane Brown Ale and the Dog Days Summer wheat. All three were nice but nothing exceptional--certainly not worth waiting three deep at the bar.

Stopped in last month following some other people. Weren't open for another half hour, bartender suggested another restaurant but when I mentioned we were more interested in the beer we were invited in. (Ask about portraits of locals when you stop in) Ordered a sampler. Really liked the cask-conditioned IPA. Well balanced but hop-heads might prefer a hoppier brew. Opted for a pint of the Smelt Camp Strong Ale; really good. Have a healthy local clientele according to the bartender and the number of mug club members. A couple of wannabe members listed on the chalk board haven't quite made the 250 pints in a year membership requirement to get a mug made by the brewer's wife. If your in the Augusta area swing by it's only a short detour off I95. Bob from CT.

I'm from Portland, OR, but I lived in Hallowell for a year. I was ecstatic when the LC opened. I wished for a good cold porter, but it's hard to beat Oregon microbrews. The food & atmosphere made me very happy. Felt like a cheery English pub. I miss it!

A favorite place for locals and tourists alike, gourmet food but a very relaxed atmosphere. A variety of beers and ales, from cask conditioned bitter to Bug Lager, to stout to India Pale Ale to Backhouse Bitter. Menu from garlic parmesian wings to shepherds pie to specials like grouper with scallop-lobster topping. Our favorite north of Boston.

Stopped in Friday for Dinner at about 7:15. Place was crowded, looked like a lot were regulars. Told there would be about 35 min. wait. Table was ready right on time. Food was great, Bug Lite was light with an excellent flavor, Summer Wheat was comparable to Sam Adams. All in all a great way to spend an evening. Highly recomended.

Stopped by on a rainy, lazy afternoon. The place is small, quaint and cozy, with a real freindly kind of feel. As I had been there before, I sampled the beers I enjoyed the first time again. Both didn't disappoint. The IPA wasn't over the top with hops, but nice and the Tarbox Cream Stout was just that; creamy and worth another taste. A neat place in a neat little town.

I've improved the rating of the Liberal Cup from the time they first opened. In the first year you might find a couple of very good selections, a coupe average and a true dud. Now they are better across the board, consistent, tasty, creative beer recipes and well conditioned. The raves for the cask bitter are legitimate, they have that one spot on for a mild session beer. The Mug Club is growing and a loyal crowd of local regulars is present. Raise your Cup!

Stopped in for a quick pint on a friday afternoon. The place was packed, but as the joint is rather small, that's easy to do. The bar has a nice, semi-rustic feel within the intiment surrondings. The cask bitter was just as I hoped, cool with just the right balance of hop and malt.

Been there twice, loved it both times. The Ex-Wife Extra Bitter is perfectly bitter, and my husband raved over the study and lucious Tarbox Cream Stout (which I noticed they pair with a dessert during their fixed-price pub dinner). The spinach/artichoke dip with multi-coloured tortilla chips and bread is a delicious meal in itself, but we also got fish & chips and shepherd's pie, substantial portions of which we brought home for another meal. Our server was Kenya, who was friendly and attentive. Casual pub atmosphere with lots of wood and booths.

Geoff the Brewmaster was having a beer at the bar and was more than willing to chat and talk beer. He has worked in breweries in England and Portland and knows his stuff. The Bangers and Mash was an excellent english sausage served with a huge pile of garlic mashed potatoes. Top notch experience.

Great home-brewed beer, quality fare, better than anywhere else in the vacinity, and a great English Pub atmosphere. Where I want to spend my time when I retire. Try the Ex-wife Extra Bitter or the Smelt Camp Extra Stron Ale, or any of the seasonal beers.

20 oz cask conditioned Back House Bitter … yeah, that's a tasty session beer. I was only able to stray once for an IPA which was hoppy and fruity to my delight. Don't deny yourself an order of parmesan garlic chicken tenders no matter how good the rest of the menu looks. The comfortable brick and timber atmosphere was packed on a Tuesday night, but the staff did a great job of keeping my glass full.

Up for the holidays; went to L Cup the day after Christmas and had a GREAT time! Bitter on cask was superb! Tara had the Cream Stout and loved it! Fish and Chips? better bring your appetite-a HUGE portion. Service was great despite the fact the place was absolutely packed. If you're within 30 miles of Hallowell you must stop in. Thank God Hallowell is around or Augusta would be a very poor culinary town.
