Stopped in on our way walking back to our hotel from the ChopHouse Brewery. had I known we were stopping here I would have left room for the garlic fries - an absolute must for any first-time GB patron. I was a little disappointed in their beer selection. They only had a golden, hefeweizen, Marzen and a seasonal (which escapes me right now) on tap. The hefeweizen was good but not great. The restaurant looks interesting - set in an old bank building. Stop in if you're in the neighborhood.

About the only drawback to our visit was that they were out of garlic fries. Appetizers, dinners, beer and desserts were all great. Service was prompt and courteous.

While visiting a relative in the DC area she took us here for a late lunch. The food was awesome, there's no doubt about it. The summer seasonal was good but nothing to write home about. About your average beer. The APA was about the same. I guess I'm spoiled by Indiana's 3 Floyds brewing. I keep comparing to them.

I visited this brewpub on 10/26/06 and had the following brews; Golden Export, Hefe Weizen, Marzen, Schwarzbier, Kolsch, Alt, & Fest Beer. Not being a fan of the German Lager tradition of brewing my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. The beers all seemed to fit the styles they were representing. I didn't like having to march up the stairs to use the restroom but that is the least of your worries at this place. Good food and good German beer.

Can't speak for the food - never eaten there. Been there for the beer many times - Always happy with almost everything I try. Whenever I'm not happy it's a sylistic difference of opinion, not a quality problem. Not a review on any specific brew, just in general, I like the place - go and enjoy!

I can assure everyone that Gordon Biersch cleans its beer lines at least every two weeks. The draft system is of high quality, consisting of hard barrier tubing which prevents off flavors from absorbing into the lines.
Gordon Biersch brews primarily German-style lagers according to the "Reinheitsgebot" (German Purity Law of 1516). Our beers are very traditional, using imported malt, hops, and a pure yeast strain. our lagers have a mimimum lagering time of five weeks. Extreme micro-brew styles like Imperial IPA's or other beers with fruit or spices will not be found here. Just well made beers brewed in a traditional manner and served in proper glassware. The fact that we specialize in German-stlye beers makes us the minority in the craft brewing industry, and a little different than some other brew pubs.
As for "tainted" flavors and bad attitudes, if anyone suspects any such flavors or poor service, please do not hesitate to call me and let me know. I will do my best to make it right.

In five years at this location Gordon Biersch has justified their reputation for excellent German-style lagers and wonderful food in a good atmosphere with good service. Their seasonal brews -- not always German-styles -- are a particular highlight (and you can sample before ordering).
In response to the prior review, I've never had problems with "tainted" tastes or suspected they weren't cleaning their lines. In my experience, their service has been friendly, polite, and comparable in speed to the many other beer stops nearby.
(First-name only and no prior reviews? I suspect someone has an axe to grind.)

Be careful when you go here - they are notorious for not cleaning their lines. Beer often tastes tainted. Service is also veeeeeery slow, and you can expect a lot of attitude served along with that burger. There's so many other options....

I'm the brother...(See review from JAX) The beer was great. But I wouldn't get the free samplers of beer. Sitting at the bar you saw how they were being served. If you don't mind fingers in your beer, knock yourself out. Food was really good. Try the appetizer sampler. Awesome! My only complaint is that they were running out of food. Sat. night at 6PM we had the last order of steak and pork sliders. We had to wait awhile before they found some. But we did get a round on the house and a order of garlic fries(Amazing) on the house. Sunday at about the same time they were out of wedge salads. Do you know how annoying it is when you have your mind set on something and you can't have it.... I don't know if it was because of the holiday weekend, but they need to stock up on their food before the weekend. Overall it was a good find in DC.

My brother and I enjoyed two dinner hours at this restaurant over the Forth of July holiday. The place had a great crowd with everyone seemly having a good time. The beer was great, as well as the Seagram's 7 that I was drinking. Good menu, recommend the ‘slider’, especially the steak. Good attentive service, but the building was a little too warm. This place is across the street from the new International Spy Museum, which just adds to a great day.

The beer was ok, but nothing to rave about. The food was also good, but quite pricey. Better deals in this town are Capitol City brewing or John Harvard's.

Smooth, well-made lagers are the key here, with a few top-fermenting German styles thrown in for fun. If you're too butt-ignorant to dig that, steer clear; but if you've got the beer sophistication to dig some cold-aged excellence, this is the place to be in DC.

After the O'Fest season the new bier on tap is a spectacular Schwartzbier. Very authentic; as tasty, smooth and black as the prom queen's thigh.

I lived for 13 years in Germany. GB's lagers, especially the Marzen, are the only ones in the USA that can compete with Bavaria's best. My compliments to the brewmeister! I wonder if he is from Germany? Food and service have been consistently good as well.

Went there instead of Capital City Brewing (Cap/ was having some big gay/AIDS party). Had a Fest Bier and Marzen. Both were very refreshing. Neither beer had an exaggerated taste/aroma. Also had their wings and the Prawn salad. Was quite impressed with the wings. I've recently lost my "taste" for chain brewpubs but I would consider going back there again.

First of all, GB brews lagers, not ales, thus, there is no porter or stout... so.... those who commented as such... don't know crap....
Second.....
The Lagers are quite tasty..... although I am more of an ale fan... you can't beat these lagers... not many places spend the time that it takes to brew a good lager, which sets it apart from the run of the mill brew-pub ... and the Marzen? forget about it..... YUMMM!!!!!

The Hefeweizen is really awesome and well worth the trip to Gordon Biersch for any wheat fan! The blend is just right with the combination of clove and banana flavors. Gordon Biersch does not encourage adding a lemon as the taste is just right. The brewer, Jason, is an expert in this wonderful wheat brew and this is his finest batch he has ever brewed for Hefeweizen! I believe it would be very hard to find a better seasonal wheat beer anywhere this year that can match it!

Great architecture in this old bank building, came in late and enjoyed the best beer in their rotation; the Maibock. Darn tasty, not as rich as their claimed 8% abv would indicate.

Aside from the eyecatching decor, I wasn't overwhelmed. They only had three beers on tap and the dunkles was the better of the lot. I'm glad they're making lagers, though.
