Happened to have a New River IPA at a local restuarant on a quick visit to Blacksburg. Unfortunately, this was the only New River brew this establishment had. I was impressed and wish that I could have sampled more.

One of the best beers in America regardless of style. Great malt flavors and massive hop notes and aroma. The hop blending is truly superb and unique for east coast brewing. If you can get a fresh one (and you should), it’s amazing. The beer is brewed by Old Dominion Brewing Company and along with their Hop Pocket ale, are a must if you are fan of APA‘s or IPA’s styles.

Though the recipe seems to have been toned down somewhat since the sudden death of young brewer Kenny Lefkowitz in 2001, this 2000 GABF Bronze Medal winner is still a great APA. Earthy grassiness from the Amarillo hops up front, followed strongly by the Centennial, Columbus and Cascades. The maltiness is not lost either, as the sweet Munich and Crystal malts stand out in the background. Not an IPA, but nearly so.
