We are the Kelleys Island Brewery. We are seasonal, with a part time brewer. Our season is 15 weeks, with weekend events listed on our website. Do you at Pubcrawler support breweries or 2 negative reporters?

Time for my annual review, after a trip to the island last weekend. If it's at all possible, the beer situation has actually gotten worse. Only TWO beers on tap this time; a belgian ale that missed the mark, but was drinkable, and a "pilsner" that was the absolute worst beer that has ever touched my lips. Yes, the WORST. Ugh! The food is still pretty good (had a great perch sandwich, and some tasty pierogies), the service was friendly, and I still like the location of the place, but the beer is so damn disappointing....

Steve and Muff, I think that you're both right. Apparently, this place changed hands sometime last winter, and is no longer named Kelley's Island Brewpub - it's JP's or BJ's or something forgettable these days. I stopped in today with the wife and kids, and I wasn't really surprised; this place falls in with the other Lake Erie island brewpubs (and I use that term loosely). Only four beers on tap - Angler's (Pale), Dawg Bizkit (Brown), Kelley's Gold, and a Lemon Ale. In a word, I felt like I was drinking experimental homebrew in my neighbor's basement - actually my neighbor's beer is closer to style. The Pale tasted more like a bad ESB, the brown (very dark) had an initial smokiness that was followed by off-flavors (tasted more like a bad stout), the lemon ale (and let me point out that no respectable brewpub - and I've been to well over 100 serves a lemon ale) was truly awful (like the gold with artificial lemon flavor), and the gold was virtually tasteless (which was a relief after choking down the previous three). The food was passable - the walleye sandwich was actually pretty good, while the service was fairly slow (although friendly). All in all, a very disappointing experience; I love the location (the outdoor patio is quiet with a nice view of the lake), and the place has potential (I know, because two years ago I stopped in and thought the beer was definitely a notch or two better than it is now). Lake visitors who stop by here (or Frontwaters, or the put-in-bay wannabes) and try craft brew for the first time will never want to try it again; they'll likely stick with Bud/Miller/Coors. These lake brewpubs exemplify the current challenges that face the micro/craft brewing industry....they do more harm than good.
