If you don't like J Patricks---You don't understand what an Irish Pub is. Canton is not Irish. Whether a real irish fiddle jam session ot the perfect pint. This is the real deal.

Awesome! Good So So Great Great
Who cares if J. Patrick's doesn't serve microbrewed beer. People go to J. Patrick's primarily to drink beer (as opposed to martinis, liquor, etc.), which in my opinion qualifies it as a "beer bar". For people who love beer and Ireland, this place gives a chance to indulge both of those passions. Bring cash, though--J Patrick's doesn't accept credit (although there is an ATM outside).

Good Good Good Awesome! Awesome!
Even though the beer choices are limited, this place wins hands down over any other place for ambiance and culture. Just a nice place to sit back and have a few. Don't forget, ladies, to hug the bartender when you go, it really makes his day. Also, be sure to engage your server/busser in some conversation and it's sure to be a delight.

not a beer bar by definition: so why is this place then listed as a beer bar in pubcrawler. there are sites for irish pubs, just as there are for martini bars. if everyone listed their favorite watering hole, then the database would be so diluted as to be unusable for it's intended purpose; i.e. identifying and rating brewpubs and beer bars so that the educated consumer can make the most of his (or her)time and money in supporting the craft brewing industry. a beer bar is defined for purposes of the website: "An establishment that does not brew its own beer, yet is microbrew-friendly... meaning, it has a good selection of microbrews and/or imports and is a good spot to hang out and enjoy good beer". just because a pub serves traditional irish libations of guinness, harp and a cider, does not qualify it as a beer bar. i enjoy irish pubs just as much as the next guy (my family would disown me if i didn't), but most irish pubs are just that, traditional irish pubs and not micro friendly beer bars.

so why is this place then listed as a beer bar in pubcrawler. there are sites for irish pubs, just as there are for martini bars. if everyone listed their favorite watering hole, then the database would be so diluted as to be unusable for it's intended purpose; i.e. identifying and rating brewpubs and beer bars so that the educated consumer can make the most of his (or her)time and money in supporting the craft brewing industry. a beer bar is defined for purposes of the website: "An establishment that does not brew its own beer, yet is microbrew-friendly... meaning, it has a good selection of microbrews and/or imports and is a good spot to hang out and enjoy good beer". just because a pub serves traditional irish libations of guinness, harp and a cider, does not qualify it as a beer bar. i enjoy irish pubs just as much as the next guy (my family would disown me if i didn't), but most irish pubs are just that, traditional irish pubs and not micro friendly beer bars.

Beer Quality Beer Selection Food Service Overall
Good So So Great Awesome! Great
This long-standing favorite of mine finally creeps into beer-bar turf--barely--with the addition of another five taps, making ten (2 Guinness, Bass, Harp, Killians, Boddington's, Miller Lite, Caffrey's, and Magner's Cider), plus a few bottles stashed. It's not a beer bar per se, but it *is* the place the real Irish community--musicians, dancers, etc.--hang out. It's an unpretentious blue-collar-neighborhood pub, serving no-nonsense pub grub and seafood (good to excellent) at reasonable prices, and the music is straight from Ireland--sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays, dance classes certain nights, paid music Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, a monthly admission-charge ceili (Irish dance party). It's a favorite for military re-enactors from nearby Fort McHenry. In short, it's cheaper than a trip to Ireland. I recommend hitting Sean Bolan's in Federal Hill for the beer-geek beer, then cruising a mile or so down Fort Avenue to J. Patrick's for the culture.
