Have not visited Clay Pipe but contacted via e-mail. They are still located in Westminster but no longer brew onsite. They contract their beer in Frederick.

Clay Pipe is no longer in Westminster if your looking to do a road/beer trip stop by Johannsens instead on Main Street Westminister.
Clay Pipe is now contract brewed by the Wild Goose (Frederick BC)in Frederick MD.
The old Pipe brewery is now owned by the (Thirsty)Dog Pub which has bars in Federal Hill and Columbia.
Hard to keep up isnt it ?!

I have been in contact with Greg Norris of Clay Pipe. The business shifting to a contact-brew basis is only temporary. Clay Pipe is in the process of building a bigger brewery and will resume brewing at the new location.

Business has shifted to all-contract brewing at Frederick's Wild Goose (ex-Frederick/Blue Ridge) Brewery, with the original brewing system sold off. The beers, if hard to find and elusive, continue to be excellent for their styles. Latest release is "Hop-ocalypse", an imperial IPA not as aggressively hoppy/bitter as the stereotypes of the style have become.

This place is getting better and better at it. Has recently unveiled a "Once and Done" line of one-off specialty/strong beers, starting with a delicious strong old ale. Also wonderful and a one-off was a custom brew for a local homebrew club (Midnight Special Pale Ale, in 22-oz. bottles); the Nice Weiss is remarkably good as well.

Nice little brewery near Westminster on route 31. Stopped by before a lunch at Johannsons and the guys there couldnt have been nicer. Pretty much dropped everything to show me around. Got an up close look (and taste) of the filtering process of their Backfin Ale. It's good, with a fair amount of hops, but the malt comes through to remind you slightly of an English Ale. Got to taste the Blue Tractor, light and refreshing and the porter, which was very good also. I've had some of their beers brewed for Racers, and enjoyed them quite a bit as well. If you see their product out at Camden Yards, or your local, give it a try!

Blue Tractor's good, the Racer's Tiretread Porter is real flavor-packed, and the Pursuit of Happiness is a noggin-knocker, but Backfin Pale Ale is a delicious pint-after-pinter, a beer that drinks so smooth you hardly notice how great it tastes. Nicely done.

The Backfin Pale Ale is the PERFECT beer to crack crabs with. Hoppy and crisp enough to cut through the Old Bay, but not so overpowering that you lose the taste of the crabs. And with the price of crabs this Season, you have to pick the right beer! This is also the PERFECT "Session Beer". On Tap- Pour after Pour-a great beer. MilCoorWiser should skulk away in shame. This beer is fresh, The hops sparkle on the tongue, and then give a great finish. Ahh, go ahead, crack open another crab, you still have some beer left! This is a perfect Micro-Brewery and Backfin Pale Ale is now available in BOTTLES! We are eagerly awaiting new and exciting brews from Clay Pipe! All The Best!

I haven't been impressed with Backfin Pale Ale or Blue Tractor Ale, both of which I've had on tap at the Last Chance Saloon. However, at the Maryland Brewers' Oktoberfest I had the chance to sample their Porter and "Nice Weiss." I thought both were very good, raising my rating from "So So" to "Good."

OK, These guys are going after the Bud drinkers for sure so I was not impressed with the pale ale or liter beer. However, they have a porter in the tanks especially for Racers Cafe that will be very tasty. Hopefully once this place gets some taps to keep it going they will produce the more flavorful beer styles.

New draught-only microbrewery in Westminster. Sampled Backfin Pale Ale (hoppy enough to pass as an IPA in many quarters, but with a lager-ish steam beer character and decent light malt backbone). Also doing O'Mulligans Irish Ale and Blue Tractor Ale, also purportedly using a short, lager-like aging process.
