I visited this brewpub on 3/13/04 and had the following brews; India Pale Ale, Ocktoberfest, Brown & Kolsch. This place appears to have been a coverted Burger King.

I am new to Pub Crawler, but have been visiting Sunset since opening.\The beer's are fantastic, and only a greater selection would be an improvement. The food is outstanding. I spent 2 years in Italy while in the Army, and their ccalzones at Sunset are the bast I have had since returning stateside. Plus, with our weather here, you can enjoy the patio bar about 10m months out of the year, today (10 March 04) was 78 degrees & sunny, cant beat that.

Visited this brewpub during a recent business trip to El Paso. Spoke to John, the owner/brewmaster, for quite a while. Both he, and his staff, are top notch! Nice variety of beer styles. Excellent downhome Itilian menu, including pizzas. John started brewing at Jaxon's, El Paso's other brewpub. After several years, he decided to go out on his own. Great job!

A Friday evening after a stop at Jaxons. I was the only customer in the place. I counted at least 10 people working and this did not count the kitchen staff. With all the people standing around you would think someone would at least talk to the only customer. I had to stop someone to find out where the rest room was. After reading the other reviews I was expecting some great beer, what a disapointment. One glass looked like water, I thought that was nice to serve that for between samples. The water turned out to be the glass of pilsner, and you had to taste it the second time to be sure. Of the others only the pale was decent, but not great.

John brews some really great beers. The IPA is outstanding - it keeps getting hoppier every time I try it. The new Pale Bock is a pretty darn good beer. My favorite after the IPA is the Bunker Buster Brown that is currently on tap - a really good blend of malt and hops. I'm looking forward to a nitro stout like John used to brew at Jaxon's.

There are usually 5 beers on tap, all good now. The nicely-hopped brown ale is my personal favorite. But the real story here is the food! It's fantastic. I can't eat a big-chain pizza anymore after eating Sunset pizzas. They've added pasta specials too. Go for the food even if you aren't drinking beer.

Now that Sunset has been open a few months things have settled in, recipes have been tweaked, and the service has improved. The "thin" stout from the first batch has been adjusted to become a fuller-bodied version well within style. The food is excellent.

Visited on Friday at lunchtime - crowd was slowly developing and by the time we left was pretty good. Looks like it could be a great place in the evening. Typical brew offerings Kolsch, Wheat, Brown, Pale Ale, and Stout. I tried the Stout and really liked it - not too bitter with nice coffee tones and good body. Food is mainly pizza oriented although this is not your usual American pizza. The style is more Italian vegetables and cheeses than meat. Great experience overall and I will go back as soon as I can.

Sunset just opened two weeks ago, so it's too early to really give the place a fair rating. The pizzas are excellent. The Kolsch and IPA are tasty, but the Stout is a bit thin for my taste.

The food is excellent. Best pizza I've ever had. The Kolsch is a wonderful beer, especially for our infernally hot climate.
-Brewmaster John Pilhofer was formerly at Jaxons. Sunset Brewery just opened June 2002.

I visited the Sunset on it's second day in business and there was already a good crowd. Three beers on tap so far: IPA, Kolsch, and Stout, with more to come. All are made in a lighter-bodied style. The IPA has a very nice hop/malt balance. Just right for summer drinking in my opinion, but maybe not as robust as some would prefer. The Stout was just too thin. More of a porter, really. The Kolsch was mildly hopped, very refreshing, and easy to drink. Beautiful light color too. Should sell well. The pizza is made in a wood-fired oven. Didn't try it, but it looked tasty. John Pilhofer used to make the beer at Jaxon's, so I'm expecting good things from the Sunset. It's too early to assign any ratings yet, but you won't be disappointed if you go.
