Read the previous couple of reviews and couldn't resist commenting. I've been coming here for years, and visit other brewpubs around the country on business regularly. This is the best brewpub I've visited, hands down. Since the owner started brewing the beer is much better--the old brewer was a heavy smoker, and as a result overhopped everything (his IPA was over 100 IBU, and the new one is about 60). Don't take my word for it (or the other reviewers), try it for yourself!

I finally made it back to the Hill Country and decided to visit one of the better brewpubs I have ever been to. I haven't been to this place in three years and was looking forward to a great IPA! One sip into my pint and I could tell that something had changed for the worse. The hop level was dissapointing and it had a strange metallic taste.I had to wonder how a place that had produced one of the best IPA's I had ever tried had fallen so far. I was told the original brewer was gone. Too bad!

The food was ok, but the service was a little slow especially considering they were not very busy. Next time I will hit Austin or Fredricksburg.

Read the reviews and had to see for myself. Only 4 beers to choose from. The IPA wasn't very hoppy, the Irish red was okay, the dunkleweizen a little too bitter with a burnt flavor, and the hefeweizen had no traditional flavors for the style and had a cream corn background flavor. As a homebrewer, I know that flavoring as a flaw in my beer. The service was good and the food quality okay. Might come back for the food but not the beer.

so two years later i gave this place another try. terrible, they had a pumkin ale that made me want to vomit. they had an esb that was total bs, and a pale ale that wasnt much better than total bs. they had an amber that was pretty decent. the wait staff sucks and they act wierd when you tell them you are just there to try the beer. i guess they expect you to order food. the good reviews this place gets makes me wonder whats wrong with the people on this site. go 40 miles to freericksburg or to the freetail in san antonio. they are both much better.

Visited The Dodging Duck last month when I was in Austin. The beer was quite good, though the Hefeweizen, while a great wheat beer, didn't taste like a true Hefeweizen. The Fowl Play IPA was the best of the bunch and excellent. I also got to socialize with the owner/brewmaster and his wife, both of whom were nice.

The food was excellent, but I have to agree that the service was a little on the slow side.

The beer selection wasn't very large but the beer they did have was good, the food was good but overpriced. The service was the worst i have ever had. First the waiter forgot our appitizer, then would take him forever to come check on his tables, i couldn't even find him to get any ketch up for my meal. When i did find him he was socializing with the staff. I drove an hour to visit this place just to be very disappointed. If you are not a very patient person don't go, and if you are be prepared to be annoyed.

This beer is AWFUL! On top of enduring the worst beer I have ever had (I couldn't finish most of the tasters), I had to wait a full 5 minutes at the bar for the staff to stop socializing with one another in order to pay the bill so I could get out of there.

DON'T GO!!!

As a homebrewer and business traveler I look forward to fresh beer. The manager/bartender was very friendly. She gave honest opinions of the beer on tap and was right on with the results. The ESB was beautifully complex. The food was fancy pub grub and portioned to save room for beer. I sat and talked to a couple of locals and enjoyed my stay. I will come back!

We live near Austin, but this is our favorite brewpub in Texas. The new brewer is doing a great job--my favorite is the Dunkel and my husband loves the E.S.B. Nothing beats sitting on the deck on a sunny day with the sausage plate and the great beer. Keep up the good work!

only 3 beers. lousy IPA (claimed 115 ibu's) ok porter, and a weak golden beer. I didnt like the place much and they charge too much (4.50 a pint and 13 for a half gallon to take home) the IPA had something wrong with it. It was bitter, but not from the hops. I probably wont go back. My girlfriend really hated it.

What a great little place. In a remodeled house so it is very small. 8 place bar and dining for 30 or so. Brewery is in seperate building. Definitely worth a trip out from SA. Just 4 beers on for me: czech pils, esb, dunkel and stout. Stout was by far my favorite. Should be on nitro though. Dinner was excellent. Tried the Bandilleros skewer and was quite pleased. Serving staff is very easy on the eyes. Unfortunately most of them are only 18?!!!!

Actually, we always have three ales and one lager. Our beer is not kegged, but goes from serving tanks straight to the taps. Most brewpubs have beers that they have all the time and then one or two seasonals at a time. We basically have four seasonal beers at all times, so we probably change our beers more often than other brewpubs. I think that for a brewpub of our relatively small size (seating wise) four beers is a good number. We make three hundred gallons at a time and most last six to eight weeks, that means the beer you are getting is very fresh. If we had six on tap the beer sales would be spread out and each beer would be there longer resulting in us changing beers less often and the beer would be a little less fresh.

We drive down to the Duck from Austin regularly for the awesome beer & food. They have three ales & one lager on now. Try the Darkwing Dunkel Weissen; it has a great malty body & fairly mild hops. The Pilsner is great, too; you can really taste the fruity pilsen malt.

We love the food too, and strongly recommend their grilled tenderloin medallions with the homemade chimichurri (sp?) sauce.

How about opening one of these in Austin??????

Disappointing that the DD does not offer cask beers, only keg beer, and that they rarely change their beers on offer. For many weeks they have not had an ale, only something they call India Pale Lager. It's OK, but no ale, and certainly no cask ale.

Their prices are pretty high for such mediocre beer.

Food is anything that can be microwaved. I don't think they actually have a real kitchen, only a place to assemble salads, sandwiches and microwave their pre-prepared dishes. Having said that, the food is OK.

I have seen such varied reviews for this place that I finally had to check it out for myself. We went on a Thursday night and ordered samplers and appetizers. The beer was unbelievable and the artichoke dip was good also. Luckily I was able to have a smoked porter right before it ran out,but what really impressed me was the IPA and the India Pale Lager! They are both incredible! The tenderloin medallions were also superb. I love this place!

Wow! I tried four beers: Quacker in the Rye Ale, India Pale Bitter, ESBIPA and Quaker Oats Nitro Stout. All were excellent. I was particularly impressed with the India Pale Bitter, a mix of IPA grain with extra special bitter hops. The Philly Cheesesteak wasn't what you would get on South Street, but it was very good plus I didn't expect to find a true Philly Cheesesteak in Texas. The Brewmaster came out and chatted for a while after I finished eating. The man certainly knows his beers!

I live in San Antonio and come to boerne every once in awhile for a little relaxation. The deck at the dodging duck is really nice to sit on an have a beer, that is if you don't mind waiting twenty minutes for it. I was not impressed with the service at all. But i loved the "heart of boerne" salad. The beer was okay except that there was only 3-4 on tap. By the, waitress knew nothing about beer when i asked her questions.

I had the good fortune to visit the Dodging Duck over the holiday season and was extremely impressed. First off, the location provided a nice peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of Christmas. Sitting on the deck next to a toasty warm outdoor heater provided a prime vantage point from which to watch the ducks on the banks of a peaceful creek. I sampled all of the beers which had their own unique flavor, each seemed better than the other so it is hard to decide which was my favorite. The fish and chips were wonderful, and the homemade tortilla soup was delicious. I finished it off with a brownie, that was topped with ice cream, whipped cream and of course more chocolate in the form of syrup. This was not in keeping with my New Year's resolution of dieting but definitly worth the small pang of guilt. Our waitress was attentive and always smiling and friendly on the numerous visits to our table. In short, I highly recommend the Duck as a must go to place any time one is in the area.

My family and I visited The Dodging Duck the day after Christmas, and we had a great time. Their E.S.B. was the best E.S.B. I've ever tasted, and the food was great, too. I had grilled prime tenderloin in a chimichurri sauce (homemade, they say), my wife had a great salad with artichokes, pecans and dried cranberries, and our son got a grilled cheese sandwich (even though it wasn't on the menu!).

I had two growlers from another brewpub in the car, and unlike some other places, they were happy to fill them, and even filled my cooler with ice! It's a charming, friendly place that we'll visit again!!!

So So Lousy Lousy Lousy So So
We visited the Dodging Duck on a Sunday evening about 1 ½ years ago. The beer was acceptable, service friendly. Our only complaint was there was virtually no parking.

Since we were visiting the area again, we reside in Pennsylvania, we decided to take our daughters and their husbands out for a family dinner and grab a couple of good Brews for ourselves. WHEEEEWWW Duckies!!! What a mistake.

The hostess crammed us into a small back table; I mean it was so tight I had to ask the child at the next table to move so I could squeeze by. When we had requested seating on the porch, and they told us only one of the propane heaters were working.

The Porter was fine with a hint of coffee, but lacked body. the pale ale was anything but pale with very little flavor. The bitter was drinkable. We were surprised at the lack of variety for a microbrew.

The food, OMG, lets see... they were out of sweet tater chips, out of pretzels, out of brewhaus burgers, so our kids ordered axsis burgers for $12.00 each, but they were out of buns and used white bread and substituted fries for the chips. The burgers were ordered Medium Well, came out Medium Rare. When asked to be cooked properly it was obvious they were microwaved... bread and all!!!! Here is the clincher, one of the reheated $12 buck axsis burger had a long hair across the top that did not belong to anyone at our table. YUCK EWWWWWHHH GROSS!

Well enough is enough and I complained about the quality of the food and lack of food they were able to offer. The waitress told me, "I can't do anything about it, I ain't the man who owns the place". I said "well where is he? I'll tell him!" She says "he is not here" Than you better get someone to adjust our bill, this was the total pits. And explained we were here from out of state and how totally disappointed we had been with everything. Some young woman that was the manager on duty finally came out and took $6.00 off each plate, WOW, $6.00 off for bad prepared food that my kids did not eat!

Sooooo if you are really thirsty and your not a local yocal stop in for a beer, but I'd suggest staying away on a Sunday night. We were told by the help it is very common to run out of many items on a Sunday.

O! One more thing. The dressing on my Greek Salad was thicker than used motor oil!

I stopped by for a couple of beers last week during the late afternoon. It wasn't very busy. I sat out on the front porch-great view but the traffic was noisy.

Beers: ESB-well done and very flavorable. Porter-nice dark color, burnt taste with medium hops and malt. Good beer.

The price of the beers didn't bother me much-I agree with the previous writer on macro vs micros.

If you want good beer, this is the place. In my recent visit, they had a Porter, ESB, Rye Pale Ale, and a dopplebock on tap. The ESB and Porter are both prior medal winners, and the others would be if they had the opportunity to submit them for judging. Sure, you can find cheaper beer in other places, but if you compare spending $3 for a 12 Oz bottle of Coors Light versus a $4.50 pint of outstanding craft brewed beer, the extra cost is easily justified. Also, the place is more of a restaurant setting than a bar. For instance, there are no TVs, and there is usually old music from the 40's playing. If you want cheap beer, and large groups of people yelling over the TVs and music, then there are plenty of bars which fit that description. If you want a chance to drink excellent beer, and have a good meal, without the typical commotion of a bar, you can do no better than the Dodging Duck.

My wife and I just stopped in for a second visit. This is an outstanding brewery. The brewer definitely knows what he is doing. They have a fantastic ESB, which I've reviewed before (a deep red English style bitter; a perfect blend of maltiness and hoppiness). On this last visit I tried two great seasonal beers; a really smooth Ducktoberfest, and an exceptional Pale Ale brewed with rye malt (the Quacker in the Rye). The food is also very good.
