Went to Richmond for the Fall 2007 race. We visited Capital Ale House on a Friday night because it was close to our hotel. The food prices seemed high for what was offered (it was just upscale bar food). We did not eat. The service sucked. Could not get a waiter to save our lives. The beer selection was unbelievable. However, the taps were dry on most of the selections we wanted to try. Do ask the bartenders their recommendations. They have tried all the beer, and given a style, can point you towards a good selection. After I was denied three different choices, the bartender recommended an excellent stout. This is one of those places to go wild and try things you have never tried before.

The tap selection was fantastic. At least 23 and a cask on a Friday evening.Chicken wings were broiled, not fried, and delicious. You can even take beers(bottled) out and savor later on. I found the barmaid to be very up on their beers and friendly. Maybe it's just because I'm so good lookin'. Highly recommended.

Fantastic beer selection- even on tap. Had the best beer ever at this place- Kloster Doppelbock- staff was eager (if not too much so (they assume you need schoolin'). Cool bar top with the iced strip for those who love their beer ultra cold. Surroundings a bit sterile for my taste - without character- but do like the locale. Would return.

You can't beat the beer selection, at least in any place I've been. With such a huge list, there are some real gems on there. The food was better than average, if not outstanding. A great downtown beer and burger establishment in the River City, with a selection of beers that I've never seen equaled and a staff that knows how to recommend one that suits individual taste.

Want Bad Service? This is your place!
We were looking forward to good beer and tasty food.
What we got was - No service until I got up and found the hostess after 15 minutes - An excessive wait for beers once we ordered - Confusion among the staff about who was to serve us - An incompetent waiter who, once he realized he could not memorize an order, had us repeat it so he could write it down, then kept getting it wrong! - A cheeseburger without cheese, that when returned, wasn't cooked right. - Overall slow service for delivery of food (both times). - An inability to find our waiter to get our check.
And to top it off, the check was wrong, and they asked us to pay a corrected (higher) check after we had already paid the first one!
It took us an hour and a half to have a burger and a beer! And of course, no apologies or attempts to make amends, which leads me to believe that this is par for the course here. If you go, bring your own food and drink. The service was so bad we considered calling for a pizza to be delivered to the restaurant.

I can't add much to what the others have written. This is a truely awesome beer bar! If you are visiting Richmond and staying at the downtown Crowne Plaza, it is only a five minute walk away.
I didn't eat, so I can't rank the food.

Definitely a must for any beer lover. This place has the widest beer selection I have seen in the state of Virginia. The beer list itself is like reading a book it is so big. Can't really remember the food, but who cares when you have this many beers to choose from? I've been to both branches and they both rule.

As if the 30 draft lines and 6 large coolers of bottles were not enough of an indication that the Capital Ale House means business, they have imbedded a refigerated metal strip along the length of the bar to rest your choice of frosty beverage upon. A bit of a novelty, I guess, but it rounds out the complete beer experience nicely. I had the oppurtunity to sample an excellent bottle of Moylan's Moylander Double IPA from Novato, California. A nice treat as it is not readily available here on the East Coast. But, with a selection as extensive as Capital's you are bound to find some true gems.

Believe all of the previous reviews. This is a super beer bar and should not be missed. Enough beers on tap and in bottles to make your head begin to spin. Server helpful and pleasant, happy to provide samples (25 cents a pop). Starr Hill IPA on cask was a treat, but the Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye is the stuff! Both my visits have been at off times, so I'd like to return when the place is hoppin'. I'm sure the crowd is great! A definite for any beer lover's "Best Of" list.

Only reasons I didn't give Capital "Awesome" across the board were because I didn't have the food and I didn't really give my bartender a chance to excel. She was perfectly competent, though, and great on execution. Capital does it right; great beers, great display, and makes you feel like you're in a place where beer matters to them as much as it matters to you. Problems are minor and few (and probably my own idiosyncratic ideas): the bar's too far from the coolers and taphandles, it's hard to see what's there and I never trust a list. Maybe too much focus on wowser beers, although that's probably just playing to the geeks. And the ice rail seems silly in cool weather. But my lord, those are the nittiest of picks! This place is great, and Richmond should be proud. The west end Capital opens shortly, with even more room, even more taps, and plentiful outdoor seating. It is gonna rock.

A re-visit Wednesday testifies to why the reviews below are so consistently high. It was my 6th or 7th visit and the rotating taps pour new (for me) & inviting brews each time. I came to enjoy Cask Conditioned Ale for the first time this past Wednesday drinking the Victory IPA. I must reiterate my comment below (Oscar from ATL in April) that Capital Ale House finds no credible competition in the southeast. Question: where in the US of A (nowhere I've been) is their a better execution of seriously good beer & food?

If you are a beer lover, this is Mecca. Richmond has several nice restaraunts and pubs, but for beer selection and presentation the Ale House is untouchable, I've been in Richmond 8 years and this is the best thing to happen to the city during that time. It somewhat pains me to write this because my only complaint is that it is sometimes too crowded for my taste and for completely selfish reasons it would be nice if its popularity dropped a bit. If getting desert, go for the Big Chocolate Cake and share it.

I can't say enough about the place. Truly one of the great beer bars we have every been to, and that includes many of them both in the U.S. and abroad. The selection is outstanding, the staff knowledgeable and well trained and the management dedicated to serving the best beers and serving them well. What more can one expect? Well worth going out of your way for.

What a place! 40+taps, and 220+ differnt bottled beers. We met Chris, one of the owners, who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about beer, food and service. Our waiter, Mike, was just excellent, with a good understanding of beer and food pairings. We tried a number of Chistmas seasonals, porters, IPA's etc. They even had Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA on tap! The icerail at the bar, is also a fabulous touch. This is one great place.

We enjoyed a nice afternoon looking over the voluminouis list of beers at this most well-appointed establishment. The warm woods and indirect lighting made this a most comfortable venue. With an attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff, the experience was most impressive. A large bar with an ice strip running through it gave the place a very professional appearance. The large wall of taps with some of the best of the local scene and the world would make a beer geek look twice. Parking is very limited, but it is readily accessible walking or by public transportation. We only enjoyed dessert here, but the menu looked inviting and we hope to stop in again and enjoy the atmosphere and the beers!

The Beer Gods have smiled on Richmond, Virginia! Impressive beer selection - from a Belgian Kwak to Dogfish Head's "90 minute IPA." Three areas with differing draft selections in each - main and a back room on the top floor and a game room downstairs. We didn't sit at the bar, but I was intrigued by the chilled tray that ran the length of the bar. Patrons can set their glass in the tray to keep the base of the glass cool - it may be a gimmick, but a nice gimmick. Food was excellent and the service was very attentive but not intrusive. Looking forward to a return trip to what may be my new favorite beer spot in Virginia.

Arrived on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Our visit was only by chance as we happend to drive by and decided then and there to stop. We we're greeted immediately and chose seats at the bar. Chelsea was our bartender and seemed well-versed in the "art" of service; friendly, knowledgable, without over-serving.
