Almost missed this place before our Berkeley visit, but worth the stop. House IPA was tasty, the food looked good, and the atmosphere was laid back and friendly. Felt a bit odd having a pint in a pub on a university campus, in a Student Center type building, but could have spent more time than our itinerary allowed for. For beer geeks' significant others who don't like pub sessions, point them down Telegraph Ave. to all the great shopping while you sit on your stool quaffing pints. It's a win-win situation!

This is the on campus pub of the University of California. Located adjacent to Lower Sproul Plaza on the Bancroft Avenue side, it serves the best pizza and the only beer on campus. It is realtively small with an outdoor seating area where you can sit, and get some sun, and watch the campus walk by. It is not plagued with the local street people that inhabit the Telegraph Avenue area. The beer comes from local microbrewries although the server was unable to tell me which one(s). I had time for a large IPA and a couple of slices of pizza after the Cal game on Saturday night. They are not serving the upscale brewpub fare that is found elsewhere. A few sandwiches and pizza, either by the slice or the whole pie. Cal sports memorabilia fills the walls and there is even a small fireplace in the corner with some seats. This is a place for a quick bit and a tasty beer when you're on campus. Parking is very tough so this is a 'walk-to' place.

Beers - in Berkeley? Yes, we now have beer on campus - and only 25 years after I graduated. The Bear's Lair is located adjacent to the ASUC Store in the basement of the Student Union. the term basement is deceiving, however, as the Lair actually opens onto a terrace on Lower Sproul Plaza. I stopped by before a football game and had a beer or two, a great pizza, and watched the show on lower Sproul. Plenty of people watching, and because it was a football Saturday, plenty of tourists to watch. The beers are brewed locally, perhaps by Triple Rock and broughtin by the keg. I had a hefe and it was fresh, clean and tasty - right on for the style. There looked to be plenty of variety as well, although I only had the hefe. We've needed a campus venue like this for decades and it seems as if the University and the students have finally done something smart - and done it well. Inside and outside seating, some at the bar. Service is good for a campus establishment. This is a great addition to the campus area and far more informal that Henri's at the Durant Hotel and closer to the campus than Larry Blake's. On a scale of 1 to 4 mugs, this gets a 3.5
