Visited the bar on a quiet Sunday afternoon. For the first 15 minutes, my wife and I were the only patrons for the bartender to keep. He was very knowledgeable about the different styles of beer and made several recommendations based on our claimed tastes.
Belgian style beers are not really my favorites but what I tried was OK and true to the bar-keeps claims.
In all, the visit was ho-hum and did not leave me feeling as though I would go back given another opportunity to do so. This is mainly due to conflicting tastes with the majority of the beers available there. If you like Belgian style beers, you might enjoy this place more than we did.

Having an incredible beer list does not make this the best beer bar in philly. due to Monks being a non-reservation place my friend suggested this place cause he heard a lot about it. I love Belgium style bars. We arrived a few minutes after our reservation time but our table was still there, which i really appreciated, philly traffic is often a pain on a Friday night.
The service was awful. They gave us the menus and as soon as one person would get an order or question in, she would take off. It took a long time to get a picther of beer and then the second one took even longer. time between ordering beverages was such a huge lag. i do not like going to a place with such a huge selection and have to wait 10 minutes after i finish one drink for the next. the food took forever and my friends ordered mussels and i had to wait upon 3 passes to order soup. as soon as i tried to ask she was already gone. my chicken sandwich was cold and my friend's chicken salad lacked the chicken and it took forever to get a few chunks of chicken to him. she told him she wouldnt charge him, but how do you screw up not putting chicken on a chicken salad. We had 5 people in our party and when it came to bill time, she so conviently placed the 20% tip on it. No way was she worth that in service and she had to also know that cause she made sure we got that already in the bill. it is ashame cause it was cozy little beer bar and it was such a bad impression on how we were treated.
its in the clubby area of philly and there is no way i would trek down there again for food. i may just go to Monks and bear the wait to get a table in the future.

This is a great beer city and this was probably my favorite beer bar. I loved this place. The bar is small, narrow and dark...and it only gets better from there. The list of Belgian beers on tap is impressive (I didn't even bother looking at the list of bottles-but it was long). The bartender was very knowledgable. No one in my group had any food, but we probably should have. There were a few injuries on our walk back to the hotel, and hangovers were had by all. Don't miss the Eulogy if you are visiting Philly.

In the City of Brotherly Love for a Labor Day pub-crawl, I finally got the much-anticipated opportunity to visit this superlative destination, one that I had been reading about for oh so long; and, since it has been reviewed so many times, Ill keep mine short and subjective.
First, I was surprised by the fact that the downstairs bar is very small in fact, I thought it rather cramped and certainly not as imagined. Fortunately, it was Sunday afternoon and sparsely crowded with a few locals, a smattering of tourists and myself. (I shudder to think of the weekend evening mobs in that small space.) Another thing that struck me upon entering was the overwhelming aroma of mussels, a Belgian specialty (more about the food).
Then there is the beer selection. Eulogy has about 20 taps that include: Busty Blonde, a light-bodied ale brewed exclusively for Eulogy Tavern; Bells Sparkling Ale, in which the Kalamazoo wonder brewer tackles Belgian ale with stunning success; Leffe Blonde and Bruin, two favorite imports; and Gulden Drak, a delicious concoction that will make you weep. Then, there is the spectacular bottle selection that is simply too numerous to count (and drink), though I did count at least one: Stone Ruination IPA, which I also drank.
Eulogy gives worthy due to the much-maligned Belgian cuisine, which has always gotten short shrift from Americans used to fast food French fries that were actually a Belgian innovation. The frites here are amazing and cooked correctly, but words in a BeerFly review do them no justice. You must try them yourself.
Investigating the small downstairs bar, a rather homey and quaint space I might say, one can gaze upon a large collection of Belgian beer paraphernalia, glance up at a couple of muted TVs (thankfully), or listen to the enjoyable music system that belts out in moderate volume some rather eclectic tunes that would offend few. The only fault was found with the mauve-colored wallpaper. I guess where there is perfection; there is also complacency. Opposite the bar, or behind you as you sit, is the steep staircase that leads to the infamous Coffin Table and an additional restroom. Eulogy Tavern also has copies of Beer Advocate magazine available for leisurely perusal.
Surely, this must be one of Americas best beer bars. --

We only stopped in for a quick beer at Eulogy, but I am extremely glad we did. To be sure, I owe the daytime bartender (who was off duty at the time) a debt of gratitude for introducing me to Struise Pannepot, which has edged Rochefort 10 as my favorite Belgian ale. Next time I am in town I will certainly allow for more time to delve deeper into the impressive beer list.

Excellent bar in an excellent location. Eulogy has about twelve beers on tap including Chimay Triple (all three Chimays are available in small bottles, the blue lable in Magnum), Leffe (Blonde and Brune), Piraat, and Kwak. There are approximatlely two hundred beers by the bottle, and the list includes quite a number of highly rated domestic and international brews. I tried the mussels and belgiam fries. They were good, my only regret was not ordering the larger portion. Most of the food that passed by looked delicious. No problem with the service, the waiter (Thor, I'll give the guy his props...) was attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable.
I'm here for two weeks and plan on making a second visit...

Hey, another visit to Eulogy, and a much better impression. I actually stopped in twice, before and after a beer dinner at City Tavern (sucks to be me, don't it?), had a Girardin gueuze and a Victory St. Boisterous. The beer was brilliant, the bottle selection second only to absolute first-tier beer bars, and the service was right on the money. And I saw someone get much better looking frites than I had on my first visit. Thanks, Eulogy, for a look at your good side. A very enjoyable visit.

Great beer selection. I think the food at Monks is better. However the service was much more friendly at Eulogy.

First Time at the Eulogy Belgian Tavern....a long time coming. Didn't eat there, but the food looked outstanding. The staff was knowledgable and friendly. 200 beers...and they seemed to know a lot about any that I asked about. Will even give you a sample if you ask. Just a great atmosphere, great beer selection....can't wait to go back and eat, and of course drink. If you are in Old City Philly....a must to stop and try a few beers....you will not regret the visit.

Have to agree Eulogy has a fantastic beer selection, best I've ever seen. I live in Vegas and get there whenever I'm in my birthtown of Philly (unlike the guy who couldn't figure out several times what days they are open and then sat at the limited bar upstairs? what a strange claim) A must visit when in the MidAtlantic region. In the great "Monk's v. Eulogy" kerfuffle, I have to throw my vote in for Eulogy. Maybe I didn't see the full beer menu when I was at Monk's or something, because I didn't get the impression that they had scrazillions of bottles available as others have implied. Eulogy's bottle list, on the other hand, was about 7 pages long and listed quite a few items I'd never seen or heard of before. As jaded a pubcrawler as I've become, that is quite an accomplishment. Like Monk's and virtually every other renown beer bar in Philly, I found the tap selection to be surprisingly small. I did prefer the atmosphere at Monk's, even with its clausterphobic dimensions. Monk's seemed more relaxed and intimate, rather than just a place to sit and drink beer as at Eulogy. I see a lot of complaints below about tax being an add-on rather than a built-in but I found this to be a common occurance in Philly (though no less annoying just because it's widespread).

Finally got to Eulogy, something I've been wanting to do since it opened (been twice when it turned out to be closed, so I was trying!). I stopped in Friday night, and they were pretty busy downstairs, no seats at the bar. I went to the upstairs bar and got a bottle of Ommegang, and paid for it. The beer was in a single cooler at the end of the bar, there were six or seven taps (quite a few more downstairs). I drank, and decided to have some frietjes - fries - to get something in my gut before drinking my next beer, a bottled Prima Pils. They came, piping hot and a lot, more than I could eat, but of uneven quality: some crisp, some limp, some underdone. I wrote that off to a busy night, no big deal. But it evidently wasn't busy enough: the bartender got wrapped up in the Duke game, and it got harder to get his attention. Then when I decided to head back to Center City and asked for the check, it came with the Ommegang on it again. He took it off without any argument, but I haven't been double-charged like that in longer than I can remember; didn't do a lot for my first impression. Overall, though, Eulogy is a place I would definitely go with friends to hang out, and like I said a bit further down the review chain here; it's GREAT to have four Belgian-type bars in Philly!

Eulogy is definitely a great place to hang out with friends and drink some delicious belgian beers (le fin du monde, duvel, and chimais white being my favorites!)...the only drawback I found was that its not good if you have more than about 3-4 people in your group since its so packed on fri/sat nights and is limited on space to begin with that we couldn't find a place to even stand (so def not good for happy hours with large groups). I thought it was okay in prices for imports (I'm originally from Boston though, so I've definitely seen the $8 draft) and even in Philly I've paid a lot more so I wouldn't consider that a huge negative for the bar as some people have mentioned. Overall a good time and great atmosphere with very helpful bartenders to guide you through a journey of lots of great beers!

Our best idea ever to wrap up Mummers Day was a 2 Street pub crawl with a rented limo to drive so no one got DUI. We started all the way down at Girard and Oz and ended up at Oregon at Cheerleaders. Saw a big yellow flag and Belgum on it and walked over to see what Belgum beers they had and the window had a list of hundreds so stopped thinking we’d grab one. Place was packed and we ended up on the second floor sitting with coffins, effing a, coffins as our tables and skull mugs with beers in em, coolest thing we’d ever seen, drinking a beer called Lucifer chilling with Bat Out of Hell playing while munching on great fries. They had Bud here too so everybody was happy and I mean really happy cause we overstayed and it was three hours later real quick and some great buzzes we were behind on our tour but everyone was very happy about dis place. Elogoy got everyones vote as best part of the tour, next year we’ll be back probably before then.

This is the greatest beer bar in America. It's got 200 beers and they are all the best beers. What most people don't understand is how they have every Style beer possible and they are all the highest ranked in each style. The beer is great and the food is perfect to accompany the beer. The mussels are the best meal deal in Philadelphia and the fries and their dip are the most addictive food I ever had, I can't stop returning. The staff smiles and jokes all the time, what a refreshing relief from most other restaurants who treat you like a bother. This is the best in Philadelphia.

I agree with Lew Bryson. It's just like the old cheesesteak argument here in Philly; Geno's or Pat's? We are indeed lucky to have several excellent Belgian bars in this city. As to who is more expensive, well I have been to both Monks and Eulogy many times and find that they are around the same. Certain items in Monks are more expensive than Eulogy and vice versa. And on a related historical note, the 10% liquor tax was introduced by Ed Rendell while he was in office as mayor in order to raise more revenue for the school system. That 10% is built in to every beer/drink you buy in this city whether that fact is advertised or not. Wonder how much of it makes it to the schools?

Tom Morrice: if you're going to spout Philly bar history, you ought to know that Bridgid's was Philly's "original" Belgian beer bar, not Cuvee. As for Monk's vs. Eulogy (vs. Bridgid's), why does one have to be "the best"? I'm pretty happy we have three Belgian-focused beer bars in town (four, if you count the Abbaye). Cheer up, buddy.

Show me another bar in Philadelphia, or anywhere else in the US for that matter where the prices don't include the 10% liquor tax. That's really really lame. I'll say this; their selection is great, particularily if you like Belgians. I only had fries with my beer when I was there. The fries were pretty good. The place looked a little “run down”. Having a background in carpentry and cabinet making, it was pretty easy to recognize that (with the low lighting and the walls painted a deep red, not to mention the fixtures). I could tell that they started to renovate the place but it looked as though they ran out of money about half way through the job. It wasn't all that crowded, but yet I felt cramped. The place needs to be bigger. The prices are a steep, especially after the 10% tax. Eulogy isn't a bad bar, but there are better (and cheaper) places to go for a pint in Philadelphia. You might want to try either Monk's or Standard Tap before Eulogy…

Of course everyone charges taxes but what is up with Eulogy listing their prices with a disclaimer that it does not include the 10% liquor tax? That is ridiculous and silly.
Second there is no need to insult previous reviewers. And for you info, I lived in Europe for one year, traveled there many times and am the the son of European immigrants. So cut the nonsense.

Eulogy is a Belgian bar owned by Belgians, Monks is owned by Irish people. Monks was not the original Belgian bar in Philly, Cuvee Notredame was and Monks copied it. Eulogy is a perfect replica of Mort Subite in Belgium, doubt previous reviewer ever left the USA. Don't know what this clown is upset about paying taxes for, everyone charges it in Philly. It boils down to Eulogy is the only real Belgian owned bar in Philadelphia, maybe the whole USA, it's in a better part of town, lower prices, better service and food by far. Eulogy has written Monk's eulogy.

This place isn't all it's cracked up to be. Yes, it has an impressive selection (obviously mostly Belgians). But the prices are ridiculous. Not to mention that they include the 10% liquor tax...what the heck is that about! Never seen any bar with that on their menu. Is this some business tax loophole they are using to their advantage?
Stick to other bars in the area which may not have the large selection but still have a good variety and certainly have better prices. Monks is still the orginal and only Belgian bar in my opinon.

Great addition to the beer scene, that I found quite by accident. I suppose I have become a regular here now on Sundays. The bartender, although quite young, is very knowledgeable and makes great recommendations (even though he says he now prefers whisky over beer!) Food is excellent with the menu just having been revamped. Mussels are a winner but for a real treat get the crab cakes. Highly recommended all round.

I stopped in for a quick bite to eat and a couple Belgian beers. I was not disappointed in any way. The service was very good and the food as well. The price was a bit more than Monks and Abbye but still well worth the stop. I would recommend this Belgian pub to anyone looking for a Great beer house to tip back a few. Enjoy!!

We stumbled upon this place by accident and had a great experience. The selection of great beers seems limitless, and the staff is able to make good recommendations. The newly expanded menu enticed us to stay for dinner and everything we had was excellent. Definitely a unique and worthwhile stop. We'll be back.
