Reading the previous reveiw reminded me of a recent visit on February 9th (Friday)at which time I had to return a beer, Bell's Brown Ale, because it tasted like soap .. apparently this establishment does not know that beer glasses, at least those from which good beer is drunk, should be washed out with a mild soap in hot water and not industrial detergent. What a waste of good beer! Gail was looking for soap ... I know where it went. This was an unfortunate incident at a place that I have always rated fairly in the past and hope to in the future. C'mon Dave, you know what great beer is all about!

Somebody needs to report this place to the health department. Of the 5 different beers I tried all tasted like they came through dirty lines and severly lacked fresh tast. The womans bathroom was fithy and no soap to be had. I complained about the lack of soap, but when I went back 20 minutes later it still had none. The floor in the main room looked like it hadn't been sweep-up in a week+. This place has all the charm of an airport bar from the 60's and the grung is appalling.

Under the ownership of Dave Alexander (of Brickskeller fame), RFD has the largest tap selection in DC, along with a very decent bottle selection. Having a rough begining service-wise, RFD has shown a remarkable improvement - particularly in knowledgable servers. They also have frequent beer-related events, such as tastings, etc. On my recent visit, I slaked my thirst with the following: North Coast's Rasputin Imperial Stout, Brooklyn Brown, Sussex Best Bitter (cask), Rogue Dead Guy, Flag Porter, Pinkus Munster Alt (bottle) and [drumroll, please]...Leffe Brown, which I have never seen on draught on this side of the Atlantic - outside of Gingerman NYC. The one downside is RFD's sports bar atmosphere, but it is up the street from the Verizon Center (FKA MCI Center), so such imperfections must be allowed. Worth a stop when in DC (I mean ... let's face it, DC is not what one would call a beer mecca. Without RFD, Brickskeller, Big Hunt or Dremo's (Arlington), I would be taking a lot more trips to Fells Point. (See my reviews for this area under "Baltimore.") Happy drinking!

I met a local friend here on a recent evening, knowing the place is under the same ownership as the Brickskeller. I wasn't disappointed. The beer selection, while not as lengthy as at the Brick, is better than that of most bars. Choices included a couple of casks on handpump. I had several beers during the evening along with a good dinner. Service was accommodating and efficient. Worth a stop when in DC.

Had an afternoon in dc to kill, so, since rfd or da's or whatever the current name may be, headed to rfd. i went there mainly for the beer, but also because i had work to do and they advertise that they have wirelss. hmmmm, after picking a seat in the front of the bar area, i was informed that the only signal was closer to the back, with no signal, then i was told that i would have to sit outside to get the signal...forget that, it is 40 degrees outside. ok, decent selection of beers on draft, was interested in the pumpkin spice brew, asked the waitress where it was from. bartender didnt know, but would check, so i requested one but only if it was NOT a ahb or coors product. they served it and then much later revealed that it was an ahb product. there are a number of good drinking establishments and brewpubs in this area, guess it would be better to patronize one that isn't so integrity challenged.

RFD is an odd place and difficult to summarize. It has one of the best selections of draft beers I've ever seen, along with an impressive selection of bottles (sort of a "greatest hits" from the Brickskeller, its sister bar). But the atmosphere is rather sports bar-like, which is to say nonexistent. The service is uneven. The food is inconsistent, although often quite good. I go regularly, simply because there's nowhere else in town to get many of these beers (and they rotate beers constantly). If you know what to expect, you won't be disappointed. If you're a beer nerd, you won't want to miss it.

Part II, Had all the left overs (3 oz samplers) agian and a 60 min ipa, with a buffalo burger. Great beer, now the bad news, the server (she)had no idea of the difference between the left overs and thought lots of hops = high alchohol, the left overs varied from a pilsner to a stout, the other server (he)had no idea, The fries were really greasy, like they were dipped in oil agian after they got cold. Ill still go back for great beer.

I went to RFD wiht some friends and had the best time. Friends told me that the service and food were not too great. When you act like an ass to waiters you get shitty service. I asked our waiter to recommend some food for us and we had the best meal in weeks. I see people bitching because the staff didn't know every little thing about a beer off of the top of their head. I used to bartend and I'll tell you right now that I made $2.25 an hour and people usually tipped %15 on their bill. If we were slow I had no problem chatting with customers, but if we were busy, then hell no I'm not gonna answer every little question for you when you will only be tipping me maybe $5-$10. People should have to work in the service industry for 6 months so they know how shit works.

I went two nights in the week that I visited DC. One of the bartenders even taught me how to properly pour a Hef. I seem to disagree with the general feeling of the site in that I went to the "brick" and found service horrible, food so-so, and beer selection lacking. Don't get me wrong, they had hundreds of beers listed - but I had to order 6 different beers before I found one that they had in stock. I would go to DA's again in a second.

I like to visit restaurants and beer bars at odd hours to avoid the crowds. But at RFD you might be avoiding attention entirely. The wait staff looks a bit hung over in the mornings but no doubt they do their job when the crowds hit.
RFD is best enjoyed from the center of the bar right in front of the taps. The bartender is always near and you'll be hard pressed to make it through all the taps in a sitting. Bottled beers are varied and high quality. Most wait staff will recommend novel or interesting selections. (As far as food goes, stick to desserts and sandwiches)

I have been to RFD twice now and doubt that I will go back again. The service is horrible. Everytime I pick out a beer, they say they don't have it. The food is nothing special and the beer selection is not as good as the "Brick". Next time, I will go there.

I went with a friend after work and had a very enjoyable time. We are 24 and 27 respectively, and were looking for a place to sit with a beer and relax. We got both. However, when ordering potato skins, the skins were small and took some time. All in all, a good place to go if you want a different experience in a relaxed atmosphere.

This place could be so much better than it is. The lagers I've tried were all flat, on two different occasions. The bar is well staffed with bartenders, but they don't know how to tend bar. They will wander around, seemely doing nothing, but you can't get their attention - just sit there with an empty glass. The fact that the lagers are flat is enough to disqulify this place. There is NO EXCUSE for a "serious" beer bar to be so lax in it's approach. This is a re-written review, after hitting a few good BP's recently, and more harsh than the original. Mediocracy should not be rewarded, it should be punished.

I visited RFD right after it opened and thought the service was terrible and the food was nothing special. On recommendations of friends, I gave RFD another try. The service was even worse this time. For a restaurant that is supposed to appeal to beer geeks, it fails miserably. Our server knew nothing about the beers being offered. I was interested in a particular cask ale, and, when questioned about it, the server said "I don't know. Ask the bartender". When I made my way to the bar and asked what style the beer was, I was told "it's a dark beer". It is also so loud that my wife and I had to scream at each other to be heard. Overall, a waste of money and an overall bad evening.

[Reposting my review from Sun, 23 Feb 2003] Came in after a Saturday night hockey game with a couple of friends. The service was good considering the place was soon packed, with people standing in the bar area and waiting out on the sidewalk. Wide selection of beers, with a separate beer menu listing what was on tap. The main beer menu reads oddly as it is organized by style. We each liked the food we ordered: hamburger, Buffalo wings, baked oysters. [Actually, organized by style isn't a bad idea with so many beers.]

Great burgers, and great beer selection. Then it goes downhill. On two visits, the tap beer was woefully under carbonated. We were drinking Pils. Belgians seem a little better. Service is amateurish, with staff milling around, but almost impossible to get their attention, more into the game on TV than the customers. Connected with the Brickskeller, it is very far cry from that excellent establishment. That said, with some whip cracking from management and better tap beer conditions, this could be an outstanding place.

We had a party of ten, and surprisingly enough all said their food was either pretty good or very good. The brew burger I had was awesome - in quality and quantity. Just don't have it with the Dogfish Raison D'Etre (or however it's spelled) - both the beer and burger were very good, but they don't belong together (my fault). Also had an Alagash Witbier and Hoegarden. Hoegarden brought back fond memories of Antwerp, but the Alagash was a better beer. Those at the table who didn't like the Hoegarden liked the Alagash. Coors bought Celis? - what's up with that:(

I've been to lunch at RFD twice and happy hour three times since it opened. So far the food has been OK, though I do disagree with the above regarding the crab cake; for the price, it's stuffed with lump crabmeat and well seasoned.

Beer and beer cuisine. The former comes in an incredible selection, along with a concerted effort to use the proper glassware. The latter is already quite good, but is a work in progress. The food may not equate to the best of Belgians, but it's still a notch above whatever other beer cuisine I've tried in the U.S.

Quite a switch from the Brick, airy and open. The beers are great, as expected. The frambois lambic on tap was a treat after dinner. Plentiful portions of good food, salads are interesting, burgers are great. Haven't tried the entrees yet. I'll be back.
