The Scotch Ale was pretty good, the stout....not so much (and I'm a big fan of stouts). We were going to eat, but ended up just leaving out of frustration when the bartender dropped off menus and drinks and didn't come back for 20+ minutes and the other bartender completely ignored us and chatted with the regulars at the other end of the bar. Terrible service, enough to keep me from going back. Quite dissapointing for a couple people that actively search out Brew Pubs.

I agree with some of the other reviews, this place can be so hit or miss. I've had great service, food and beer and left with such a positive feeling and happy I spent my money here. Other times, the beer selection off or flat, the food bad and service so awful, as if I'm doing them a favor by even speaking to them. They even got very nit-picky with a coupon with our party of 7 one time. They passed out coupons at the Michigan Beer Festival for free samples (2 or 3, I can't remember which), maybe 5 oz. each. I gave this to the server at the beginning of the meal several months later when we decided to go here for lunch. At the end of the meal, we submitted 1 Entertainment Coupon for the 7 of us and we couldn't use it because we already used the free sample coupon. Huh? A free sample is a free sample, not a coupon. Why bother passing this junk out. C'mon guys, it wasn't like there were just two of us, there were 7 all ordering full meals with a total bill over $120 and we can't use 1 coupon? Overall, I had more positive experiences than bad and when the food is on, the beers are cold and they're served by someone pleasant with a smile, there really aren't many places better. Stopped in last night before the Tigers game for dinner with the family and afterwards for a nightcap while the traffic was piled up. Both experiences were very good with no complaints. Parking is tough but it's worth the trip.

Being stop #3 on a baseball/brews, couldn't have found a better place to put a tiger in my tank prior to an evening game. The IPA, Red and Porter were great as was the jerk chicken sandwich w/coleslaw. Full bar. Outdoor patio. Friendly staff. Great "jukebox".

The "People Mover Porter" just came out the day we got there this week! One sip and WOW was it terrific. The aftertaste is just incredible. Couldn't wait to finish the first draft and get to the second! And then the third! This may just be the best Porter we have ever had. We enjoyed talking to Kevin the brewer, PJ the manager, and Sean the bartender. We tried the Detroit Dwarf (ask them about the history of the red dwarf that appears whenever there's a tragedy!), the Nut Brown, the Detroit Red, the IPA, and the Lager (I believe this one won an award at the GABF this year). We had a great dinner here, also. The blackened catfish was excellent, as was the Swiss Butcher Platter (try saying that 3 times fast!). All in all, we were SO happy we were here and especially for the "inauguration" of the Porter! Keep up the good work, Kevin.

I had the blackened catfish with rice and it was great. It was cajun spiced nicely, which made the 2 IPA pints taste very nice. Plus, when you sit at the bar (MTW only) the pints are a buck fifty....what a deal! Man, do in like beer!!

Used to like this place....now I think it sucks! Not sure what happened but there is not a single familiar face in there anymore. It doesn't even seem like the same place. I used to just stop in for a beer and to chat it up with the awesome staff. Bad service is now the norm. Where is the love? I will not be renewing my "mug club membership" here.

I really love coming to the DBC, but it is hit or miss. In the last three months I've had really awesome experiences with staff, and really terrible experiences with staff. Last time I went I ordered the Broadway Light beer and the waitress made a face at me and says "the light?!" as if I ordered a glass of sour milk. I can see why she did that because it kind of tasted like sour milk. Not sure which was worse, the bad-tasting beer or the critique of my order. I will continue to come back to the DBC, however, because it has a great location and I love the IPA. Can't wait for the Pumpkin beer this fall!

I agree with "Dan".....what the hell happened to this place? Used to love going here. I knew the staff and they knew their stuff...fast and fun. Now it takes 15 minutes to get a beer and it's like pulling teeth to get a smile out of them. Disappointing turn of events!

What happened to this place? A year ago there were great bartenders and friendly servers. Now is seems like no one really wants to be there and customers are just a nuisance. And what's with the staff turnover? Even the managers don't seem to want to stay! This would definitely not be my first choice when going downtown.

Tried to go here on Super Bowl Sunday before the game. They were charging $20 to enter offering nothing extra that I'm aware of. Very tacky, guys. I went next door and spent $100. A better alternative would have been to let game attendees in for free up to a certain time. and then - never mind - to charge admission to drink a beer is just down right wrong.

Love this place. Always go here for the good food, great beer and excellent service. However, lateley I have noticed that the majority of the friendly staff I have known and loved seems to be gone and the ones who are still there appear quite fed up as well??! What is going on down there?

Detroit sucks... The beer company is great though. If you are going downtown, hit this place. Great before a game (its within 5 min walking of commerica and ford field) The oatmeal stout is amazing. The IPA is fantastic. They serve everything way too cold. I just let it come and sit for 10 min. then its perfect. They need more than 5 beers though. Its just too few. Great place to watch an away detroit game too. 2 thumbs way up.

Another great trip back to Detroit Beer Co!! The Zwickel beer was fantastic; it's a rich, complex, caramel colored brew. The IPA was very good, not too bitter, with a great floral hop aroma. Unfortunately, the Oatmeal Stout didn't have the full body that I expected from that type; maybe because it was served too cold. The cold, chipolte cheese dip is fantastic!! Spicy & plentiful, it goes very well with the hearty beers...and it's half price during happy hour, along with all the other appetizers. My friend and I thoroughly enjoy our fish entrees (blackened catfish with rice & beans and the cajun salmon sandwich). DBC is a great reason to go downtown!!

Awesome! Great Great So So Great
My recent visit to the Detroit Beer Company was a couple days ago. It has been at least 6 months since my last visit. Travis, the brewer, continues to make very tasty brews. My favorite is the Red, which is very malty with full flavor. It is an excellent red and probably the best in the area. I also enjoyed the IPA very much. Travis's beer are extremely well made, with a lasting fullness of flavor. Well done Travis. The food is also great. Make sure you start with a cup of the beer cheese soup. My only complaint with my visit was our server. She was very sweet but not informed at all regarding the beer or even the food. When asked about what kind of cheese is used in the beer cheese soup, she responded with "beer cheese", instead of Munster Cheese. When I ordered the Hefe, she looked at me with no clue of what I asked for. She's not the first server at the Beer Company to not understand that their Schizo-Weizen is the name of their Hefeweizen-style beer. How hard is it to have Travis give the servers a short class on basic beer information? Otherwise, a great place for great beer and great food!

The IPA was okay, enjoyable but not in the top tier of beers. The Detroit Red, an amber ale, was very good indeed. However the St. Brigids Oatmeal Stout was absolutely the best I have ever had. It is truly food in itself. Travis, the brewmaster, did himself proud on this one.

The quality of the beers were great. I had the IPA, Dwarf, Detroit Red, and Oatmeal Stout and they were all well brewed. Out of towners might find the construction and parking a little tricky, but it's worth it due to the high quality beer and close proximity to all that is good about downtown Detroit.

Went in on friday night after the casino. Enjoyed their oatmeal stout while watching the two big screen tv's at the bar. The chicken quesadilla's were very good. The beef stew looked better but didn't have it.

Great Great Great So So Good
I luv the location of the bar! The bar itself is very comfortable and is well put together! Great selection of beer and food. On the other hand, the service at the bar is always very, very average, although the waitresses are very attentive. I live downtown, and I usually don't make of huge point of stopping in to the Beer Co. Everytime myself or one of my friends do stop in, the bartenders (especially this one male bartender)always seems to be in a daze or off doing other things. They never seem to take anyone's order right away. They're just not as friendly as other local bartenders. Of course, I like supporting Detroit bars, but the management really does need to hire bartenders with a little more personality.

We stopped in for a late lunch after the auto show, and enjoyed this place. Food was excellent. The beers were very good, IPA, dunkelweizen (excellent), and porter. Worth a stop.

We were there in September while back in town and really enjoyed it. The area has lots of construction going on, but it is probably fixed up by now. They had an excellent Detroit Red (toasty amber), Local 1529 IPA, and Dwarf Ale (roasty IPA) on tap. The Steamtunnel Stout was medium body and roasty. They also had Hot Town Wit and Broadway Light. A nice brewpub. I hope the downtown Detroit location makes it in the long run.
