The IPA's and Pale Ales were awesome. Don't leave without having the home made potato chips with the bleu cheese and vinigar dripped on them. And if you sit at the left end of the bar, say hey to Doug for me.

I went to Sac last weekend to relax and see the sites. I was planning on skipping this brewery for a couple that had higher rankings on PubCrawler.com. I found out that this place was only a few blocks from my sister's house and I am very glad I stopped by. The service was excellent and the beers were tasty. I especially enjoyed the vanilla stout. All of the beers I tried were very smooth with tons of flavor. Even the IPA was smooth and not overly bitter, like IPA's sometimes are. I didn't stay for full dinner, but I enjoyed the appetizers very much. I plan to stop by every time I visit downtown Sac. Good times!

Don't go into this place looking for good service. Food and beer are good, sevice is horrible. Two visits in row my group has been seated without a BEER MENU. After getting parched waiting for the server to show at our table we had to ask for a beer menu at a brew pub. Unacceptable. When the beer we ordered finally showed, the server disappeared. The table busser outshone the server on both visits. The hostess was made aware of the situation, but basically didn't care either time.
If you decide to go, good luck. I don't think I'll be back for quite a while..........

On 9/15/07 my wife and I took her parents out for the evening. We chose Brew It Up because I like the beer and my in laws like the food. I have no problem with the beer or food. My problem with this place is the SERVICE. It is pretty bad when the busser out works the server. Two visits in a row we have recieved LOUSY service. How is it that you get seated at a brew pub without a BEER MENU? Unacceptable. The servers let you sit at the table for a very unacceptable amount of time before making their presence known and then show up without a BEER MENU. It is pretty sad when you need to ask for a beer menu at a brew pub. This is not an isolated incident, it happened 2 bloody times in a row. We made our feelings known to the hostess that basically blew us off using the old line of "we're busy tonight".
Needless to say, although I enjoy the Irish Amber Ale and other beers, I will not be visiting anytime soon. I hope other people have better luck, but I wouldn't bet on it.....

Yes, you read correctly, 22 taps! Clearly the selection in this place is fantastic. The service is also excellent and friendly. It has a neighborhood bar feeling to it, despite its size. The darker beers are particular standouts. The Nitro Porter is excellent. The Vanilla Cream Stout is very creamy and a good dessert beer. Likewise the Oatmeal Stout and the Imperial Stout are excellent. The Marzen had nice body and good malty overtones.
The ales are pretty typical. The Hallertauer Lager, though, was nice and crisp. It was also fun to watch some people come in and bottle some batches they had made (and sample a little too!), as well as others start brewing new batches in the steam powered Canadian brew on premises (BOP) equipment.
Don't miss this place. It is fun and friendly. with new beer constantly coming on.

I just don't like their beer. They have 24 taps, you would think that they would have something that is good, but the quality is just poor. When they first opened, I would have given the beer a "Great" rating, but they have let quality slide considerably.
Food is VERY overpriced. Burgers are around $10, for example.

I was happy to find this place two blocks from my hotel room (no need for a D.D). Visited on a Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a very friendly and efficient beertender. They have a huge selection of microbrews to choose from and something for everyone. I had the Orange Blossom Blonde (light, sweet and fruity), Engine #2 Ale (a tasty pale ale) and Old Dussel Alt Bier (a German style alt bier and the tastiest of the day). They had Marzen and Nordendorgerf Lager on the menu, but were currently out of stock. Not the best I have had, but this is a definite stop if you are in the area. The menu looked great too, but I already had dinner plans...perhaps next time.

Soon as I walked in the door and heard blues piped thru the sound system, I knew I was in the right place. And since it was an early Sunday afternoon, finding a place at the bar was not a problem. Having visited 80 or so brewpubs over the years, I've yet to come across a place that has so many selections. Even with a few taps empty, they had over a dozen brews to choose from to go along with the full bar. To make it even better, most pours come in 19 or 20 oz. glasses. Started off with a Scotch Ale that went down real quick. While waiting for my food, made short work of an Arick the Red. The menu was as varied as the beer selection but ended up with a Smoked Pork Sandwich that was a napkins worst nightmare. And I mean that in a good way. Dee-lish! Finished off the visit with a Northern Mild "Nutty" Brown Ale. Other reviewers seemed to have issues with this place but I know where I'm going when I find myself in the Sac'to area (especially now that Beermann's Beerwerks in Lincoln has closed its doors).

After two visits, I have yet to find a single exceptional beer at Brew It Up. Service has been inconsistent. They offer brewing as well as dining. A friend brewed a batch there and when it came time to bottle, their equipment had problems and perhaps as a result he came up short on the number of bottles. All in all, not a lot to recommend this place.

I visited “Brew it Up!” last Tuesday while in Sacramento on business, and given the hype from previous Pubcrawler reviews felt let down after drinking there – let down by the beer.
“Brew it Up!” is a single floor establishment occupying the corner of a building on a street corner. The floor plan is open and rectangular, with the bar all the way in the back. The food seemed popular, there were some 50 people eating in the dining area. I enjoyed some calamari at the bar, which came with both a marinara sauce (yum) and a chipotle sauce (not so yum, would have been better on a sweet smoked meat like pulled pork).
There were another 25 people drinking either at the bar or at small tables next to the bar. The single bartender – an attractive young blond woman who I think was named Paula – handled this large crowd very competently. Within a minute of my sitting down she asked me for my drink order, had a food menu in my hands within another minute of asking, along with my first beer. Throughout the evening she checked with me regularly. I wouldn’t have had the energy to deal with that crowd, but she was like the Energizer Bunny. The waitress that delivered the food was prompt, friendly, and checked back with me twice.
California is a smoke-free bar state, which I appreciate. Unfortunately smokers would indulge in their habit just outside the bar’s side door, and then rush back in dragging the smell of tobacco smoke in their slipstream.
My first beer was a pint of their Marzen. It arrived with no head, which was worrying enough, but things got worse before I took my first sip. As I brought it to my lips I caught the unmistakable aroma of dimethyl sulfide (DMS). It wasn’t at the “canned corn” stage (the flavor / aroma profile of DMS is often compared to cooked vegetables or corn), but it was strong and unmistakable and totally ruined the beer. The “Marzen”, by the way, had no discernable malt flavor either.
After that I had a four beer sampler – an “Imperial” IPA, a Belgium triple, a barleywine, and an imperial stout. All four were ruined by the DMS nose / taste. The IPA had a nice cleansing bitterness, the Belgium triple lacked the estery notes I associate with the style (I’m not asking for bubble-gum here, but something!), the barleywine would have been quite good if not for the DMS, and I found the Imperial Stout too syrupy. At least the beers weren’t too cold. All in all, a disappointing beer experience.
While DMS can be the result of a bacterial infection, I noted no sour flavor notes or other signs of infection. In homebrewing DMS is usually the result of a covered boil or non-rolling boil, or covering the wort after boiling and not getting the temperature below 140 deg. F. quickly enough. “Brew it Up!” allows patrons to brew their own beers in small kettles in the establishment, which appeared to be steam-jacketed and covered. I don’t know if the professional brewers there use the same equipment or not, or what in the end was causing the DMS, but I found it a terminal fault in all five beers I sampled.

great place: they have the best brewpub selection in sacramento, and some of the styles (especially stronger, darker, and bigger) are the best examples in town. the Skydiver Barleywine is excellent, as are the Three Amigos (Belgian style golden), Vanilla Stout, Captain Ron's Double IPA, etc. most beers are true to style, 12-16 on tap at any time.
parking is actually not that difficult at all, unless there is an event at the Civic Center Auditorium, a few blocks away. even then, look for on-street parking in the one to three blocks WEST of the place. i've NEVER had to park more than three blocks away. i usually park on 14th Street, in free 2-hour diagonal spots, within a half to one block. last night we parked one and a half blocks away. earlier this week it was also one and a half blocks. i only occasionally have to pay for a meter (maybe 1/10 of the time.) don't go north into the residential neighborhood, though: most of it is one hour limit until 10pm.
as for the guy complaining about them not selling pitchers: do you really only patronize places that sell pitchers? you want to drink just one thing, and not taste any of the the 14 or 15 other styles on tap? okay -- it's your loss. i think you should give them another try, though.
food is very tasty, if a little expensive for a brewpub ($10-$15 entrees, $8-$9 sandwiches). the decor is high-end, lots of dark wood and glass, but the clientle is far from snobby most times, except maybe pre-show theatre goers, and they only exist between 6pm and 7:30pm. most of the bar crowd is downtown workers during happy hour, and later on, folks who live locally or drive down and find parking.
brew it up has a good happy hour (4p-6p) with $3 pints, and FREE hot snacks (cheese sticks & jalapeno poppers) with a 2-drink minimum (though i've always been given a plate as soon as i ordered one beer.)
they also do brew-on-premises, and will let you brew ANYTHING you want: they'll special order hops, yeast, and grains they don't normally carry if you ask. it's a great way to try brewing without having to clean up yourself, and a hell of a buy for all the beer you get.
i'd encourage people to not be put off by the parking horror stories: be willing to walk a couple of blocks: it's well worth it.
Brew It Up compares very favorably to other locals (Rubicon, Pyramid), is not in the burbs (Sac Brewing, Hoppy), and kicks the crap out of the terrible places nearby (River City Brewing, Hogshead.)

After driving around for 15 minuets looking for a parking place where we didn't have to pay $7 or $8 to park (although the web site says they'll validate, the parking lot next to it was pre pay only)we walked in, were promptly greeted and seated. Perusing the menu for another 15-20 minuets our order was not taken (perhaps because of our leathers, who knows). When we found out that they didn't serve pitchers we left. The menu seemed very expensive for grub, and most of the clientle appeared to be a little too uppity, snobish, and Yuppy for our liking. I think the owners need to decide if they are going to have an upscale restaurant, or a brew pub. Unfortunately we left without trying their beer and ale. We found another brew pub nearby which we loved.

This is probably my favorite brewpub right now. Over 20 freshly brewed beers on tap and they are not always the same beers! Vanilla Cream Stout is truly an excellent beer (creamy and vanilla taste comes through perfectly). Northern Mild Nutty Brown Ale, Engine #2 Ale, Dunkel bock, Belgian Tripple, IPA, ESB, Oatmeal Stout, and Czar's Tar (really sweet stout) are all really good. Big Valley Red (chocolate flavor with pronounced citrus presence) is probably the most unique beer I had and also good. Avoid the Scotch Ale (no smoky taste, just an odd one that doesn't work). As for food I've only had soups so far but both were good. The atmosphere is that of a nice restaurant influence by an obvious love of beer (in the corner you can see groups of people off the street making their own brews). Keep in mind that the beers you order are made by a brewer who really knows what he is doing, not the people off the street. If you find yourself in Sacramento this place is a must.
