This is a chain brewpub and it showed. The beers were marginal; none seemed to be spot on for style. I suppose I could have guessed this when their IPA was repeatedly referred to as an INDIANA Pale Ale. It's a tourist place. Service was adequate for a Saturday night, but that is all. Not worth a return trip.

Went to the downstairs beer hall on 3/2/08, about 3 pm. No wait staff except the bartender. Folks would come in, look around, and grab a menu off the unattended host station, and wait. Became a game with my husband and I to watch people get irritated. Bartender was working hard, couldn't diss him, but someone was asleep at the switch. There were plenty of bodies upstairs. Got the sampler, Bock was excellent.

For a chain brewery I was very impressed. I ordered the IPA, which tasted a lot like an Alpha King. Seeing that I had ordered the IPA, the waiter brought over a sample of their tripple-hopped beer (the name escapes me) which was very good, but not as good as the IPA. This is the place to go before you stand in line for three hours to go to the observatory. Too bad you cannot take a growler up with you.

Third time here. Today I had the Old Red Nose Ale which is a winter seasonal. It is slightly spiced but not too bitter. Has a nice amber color. Then I had the Farmers Oatmeal Stout. It is a dark, creamy flavorfull stout. On a 25 degree day these 2 really hit the spot. At 3pm on a Friday the restaurant and bar were both very crowded but was served rather quickly. Service gets only a great because the bartender was not available to discuss the beer with a full seating.

I was there on 01/16/05 for my birthday. The waiter was amazing, so polite and attentive. It was a wonderful ending to my first trip to NYC, I'd go again in a heartbeat.

The latest member of the NYC Heartland family. Opened 16 November 2004
I visited this location twice while I was in NYC for Thanksgiving. This space may have improved on the original at Union Square. The beer and food are pretty much the same as other locations--with the exception of the snooty Times Square location. My first visit was on Tuesday November 23, 2004. They had been open a week and were still working out a few kinks but the service was excellent. I sat at the street level bar and received excellent service. I returned on Saturday the 27th with a friend. Again, we sat at the street level bar. Service was not so great this time. We were there from about 8:30-10:00 PM. The bar was not busy but the dinning room was. The bartender pretty much ignored us till we flagged them down to get a drink. When we got our bill we understood why the service was so bad--they were adding a 17% tip to the bill--so the bartender was getting a 17% tip regardless of how bad the service was. In his defense, he did tell us that the tip had been added. HOWEVER, he took it upon himself to charge the 17% tip on the pint glasses I bought too. This crappy practice (and one I had not encountered at the other Heartlands--including those nasty servers at the Times Square location)is what brought my service rating down to good. The noon time bartender was soooo much better--his high rating is what kept the servcie ratting from a 'so-so.' Both visits the place was not run over with tourists. This will undoubltably change. If you go and the street level is busy, go on down the stairs. The bottom level is huge! Another bar and almost twice as much seating is one level down--along with the men's/ladies room.
