It's been a few years since I've been to Poe's, but recall enjoying it thoroughly. However, since so much time has passed I do not feel right on commenting about the food/service. Yet, I cannot resist to reply to the claim that they are "cheating" the customer on a pint of beer. In both claims, it does not appear to me that the radius/circumference of the glass is being taken into account. Assuming that Poe's pint glasses are much like those in most places, they are not likely the same circumference at the bottom of the glass than they are at the top. They probably have "slanted" sides. Therefore, it takes less "height" at the top of the glass to hold the same "area" or volume of liquid than it would at the bottom. Hence, hypothetically speaking, the volume held by 2" of "height" at the bottom of the glass might be held by only 1/2" at the top of the glass. I suppose I can see how this might fool someone, but one should really consider educating themselves on all possibilities before making potentially damaging claims on another's business and livelihood.

Stopped by yesterday and found out that Jerm was right. I invite all readers to do the test: pour completely a 12 oz bottle into a 16 oz glass at Poe's tavern, and note the 1/2 inch difference compared to the glass's 6+ inch height.

OTHER CRITERIA:

Great E.A. Poe atmosphere from the artwork

Alot of lively customers- this is a popular place.

Waitresses are pretty, but appear overworked and show varying shades of unsociableness as well as varying shades of desiring to be unsociable.

Sign says something like "We reserve the right to deny service to anyone," so if the bar lady is slow, don't ask a waitress to help you!

Prices are also high. The menu on their website as of today says most bottled beer (eg Heineken, Franziskaner) is $4.00, at the menu at the bar it is $4.25.

Its easy to figure out- Does the extra space equal 1/3 of the 12 ounces you poured into the 16 ounce glass? If not, then you WERE cheated.

To put it another way if the extra 4 ounces (between the 16 oz and 12 oz cups) were supposed to fit in that 1/2 inch space, that would mean: 1/2 inch in the glass= 4 ounces of beer.

4 ounces x 4 = 16 1/2 inch x 4 = 2

so a full 16 ounce glass would only be 2 inches high!

If you put 12 ounces in a 16 ounce glass, the math shows that the empty space has to be alot more than 1/2 inch.

Now lets give the bar owner the benefit of a doubt. Lets say Jerm is making up a 1/2 inch and it was really 1 inch to the top. 1 inch= 4 oz beer 4 oz beer X 4 =16 1 inch X 4 = a 4 inch tall glass!

Readers can try it out:

If your 12 oz beer goes a whole inch or closer to the top of the glass, you are being cheated.

(which sounds like whats happening.)

Reply to Jerm: I have only recently read this comment about Poe's Tavern and have attempted without success to reach the webmaster of this site. Consequently, I will reply directly: Poe's Tavern serves draught beer in 10 ounce and 16 ounce glasses (16 ounces being one U.S. pint). I have spoken to the manager on duty on the day in question and this customer received a 16 ounce glass. It is interesting to note his claim that the glass was "COMPLETELY FILLED" yet had an "extra half inch to the rim". I suggest that he find a 16 ounce mixing glass (the one used at Poe's and innumerable other bars across the country) and a measuring cup and practice filling it TO THE RIM with water. He will find that it holds precisely 16 ounces. It is the right of every customer to objectively critique food quality, service etc., quite another to state that an establishment "lies" to its customers. Jerm is mistaken, and rather than providing an objective review, merely looks foolish.

FALSE ADVERTISING AT IT'S GREATEST: Their menu boasts a "16 ounce" pint. When I ordered one, I was certain that I only received a 12 ounce glass by mistake. When told I was wrong, I finished the beer, then ordered a 12 ounce bottled beer and COMPLETELY FILLED the "16 ounce" glass with it's contents. I showed the manager and he told me I WAS WRONG, and that the extra half-inch to the rim of the glass was more than enough to hold the extra 4 ounces! I will never again go to Poe's Tavern on the basis that they LIE to their customers, even when called out and caught red-handed.
