Pretty good place, awesome beer selection. Be careful though, they carry many of the heavyweight beers in excess of 6.5% alcohol content.

I just happened by this site, and I happened upon a bar I visited once upon a time. Great beer selection, no doubt, especially Europeans but definitely a lot of American micros. We just had a cheese plate, but it was very fresh and the crusty bread that went with it was nice. Hats off to the owners who must love their beers. The east Village is soooo cool.

My chance to butt in. Like Phil says, this place, the Hop Devil Grill, has hands down the best Belgian beer selection in the entire tri-state area. Who comes close? Not only do they always have 5 great Belgians on tap all the time (last time I was there they had Dragonmead Triple and Cantillon Lou Pepe Framboise), but their Belgian bottle selection is crazy! Add to that the other side which has 24 amazing American micros as well as a cask-conditioned (last time, Oskar Blues Leroy Brown, never before even seen anywhere in NYC, but here on cask!), and a huge range of American and international craft beer. So, the food isn't the greatest. What pub in NYC has great food and this kind of beer selection? None that I can think of anywhere I have, so the food is alright. At least you can get food here. True, Waterfront Ale House does do a bit better cuisine, but look at the taps. Service? Always good when I go, if not always spectacular. Sometimes they are too busy to be that personable. I come here for the beer, and when it comes to beer, these guys deliver!

Regarding the bickering about who is posting what, you can click on the little file icon next to the poster's name to see what he or she has posted. I found it ironic that the person who complained about anonmous posting posted anonomously, himself.
Hop Devil Grill/the Belgian Room probably has the best Belgian beer selection in New York City, maybe even in the tri-state area. The food may not be the greatest, but I can get food anywhere; the large selection of beers is the draw here.

I fall somewhere in-between the extremes for the Hop Devil. There are a lot of rah-rah reviews written by drive-by reviewers for several bars in this town, Hop Devil included. It does begin to look suspicious, and I suspect the anonymous poster simply doesn't want to be harassed.
Anyhow. The beer selection at Hop Devil is excellent. With 30 lines devoted to a wide assortment of American craft beer and a few major imports in the main bar, including a cask, and a staggering display of Belgian beer in the Belgian Room, the selection can not be disputed. Sure you can get a Corona or a Heineken (in bottles), but you'll pay dearly for the "privilege".
I've yet to have an undrinkable beer in either section, though it does happen that a rather murky cask or keg makes it on occasionally.
The food is strictly there to slow down the progress of alcohol through your system. Nothing fancy. The beer, while obviously chosen with care, tends to be marked up with a strange randomness. Some bottles are the standard triple-wholesale or double-retail, while others are twice that and beyond.
Service is hit and miss. Some bartenders are very knowledgeable about what they're serving, while others know just the style, and still others really have no idea. I'd guess this has a lot to do with how long they've worked in beer. Don't expect a lot of buybacks, either.
In short, it's a great addition to the area, but has its flaws like every bar.

This is a very fine pub. I am mainly writing to dispute what the last review said. Its anonymous, right? So, why is she hiding? I see reviews all over this site with the person writing it writing only that one. Both negative ones and positive ones. How does this guy know who is writing what? Did he ask the owners if it was them, or maybe just locals who wrote in? Hop Devil is a popular spot, so it could be anyone. Just my 2 cents.

I find it disgusting that, out of the seven reviews for Hop Devil Grill, only one comes from a person who has visited and reviewed more than one bar not owned by the owners of HDG.
Out of the others, Isaac has posted two reviews here, under the names Isaac and under Kevin Slavin (click on their folders to see their reviews).
The number of different beers are plentiful and the lines are kept clean. I will give the owners that. The food is not that good; it's bland and often not to your liking. Ask for a hamburger cook medium rare and see how well done it is. The staff is not as familiar about the beers as the owners might like. When you ask about a beer and are told "it's a strong belgian," you have to wonder.
There are only a few good bars in New York that deserve the praise that HDG is giving itself, and this isn't one of them.

I like everything about the Hop Devil Grill. I never have been to a place that takes their beer so seriously. Not only is there an amazing selection of beers behind the bar on tap to drink while you are there, they also fill gallon jugs to go! Rare beers you never see anywhere else as well. Bartenders treat you with respect and really know their stuff. Food was good. Great burgers and the best fries. I recommend their chicken wing special on Monday nights. Simply the best wings in the city.

I visited this bar just over the weekend to watch some World Cup games. Great big screen TV and smaller plasmas around for the sports. Insane and amazing beer selection beyond all belief. Literally hundreds of bottles including over 100 Belgian beers. There are also loads of taps. Lots of Avery and Thomas Hooker on tap it seemed, but there was also Rogue, Sierra Nevada, Magic Hat and Dogfish Head. Except for the "Belgian Room", they had all American Craft beer. The Belgian Room had all Belgian beers, including some that are quite obscure, like one called "Silly" Scotch! First time I ever heard of that. Anyways, this place has a very cool vibe, a real nice and friendly staff and excellent hamburgers. Highly recommended.

In a word, this place rocks. Its easily the best new thing in the East Village. 30 taps of consistently rotating beers, with some never-before-seen in New York City beer. Hair of the Dog Blue Dot on tap, Cantillon, Avery Maharaja, Rogue Love and Hoppiness, wow, the list goes on. Add to that a huge 200 bottle list, no stinkers included. Pretty good food, decent vibe coming from the juke, and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. The bartender is hot. Gets crowded late Friday and Saturday nights, but the weekdays are mellow. Highly recommended!

Really, really good beer bar with two sections. American Craft and Belgian. Belgian side features 5 Belgian drafts, tons of bottles and mussels and frites. The American side has 25 drafts including an authentic hand pull and only great craft beer on tap. Full dinner and brunch menu.

Brought to you by the same folks that run David Copperfield's on the Upper East Side, the Hop Devil Grill is a welcome addition to the Saint Marks bar scene. An excellent selection of well-kept drafts draws you into the former home of Stingy LuLus and the huge bottle selection keeps you there. I especially enjoyed the novel "Belgian Side," but it also led to my one negative critique of the Hop Devil. With Belgians being so particular about their glassware wouldn't it follow that a Belgian beer bar would be too? Nit-picky I know, but I can't help but feel that the owners are just as nit-picky. St. Bernardus in an Ommegang Hennepin glass? Tsk Tsk. But, fix (or ignore) that one error and you've got a stellar establishment.

Hop Devil Rocks. We went to the Sam Adams Dinner and got some excellent food. The best was the fried cheesecake with the rasberry wheat. Overall the atmosphere was fun, and we have since returned for the Sunday brunch and NFL Sunday ticket. We also had a shot of Utopias with the Sam Adams dinner which was pretty cool.

This is one of New York City's true beer bars. 30 taps, no crap on tap. Two separate and distinct bars. One all craft beers from USA, UK and Germany, the other completely Belgian. Over 240 bottles of different beers. They also have Belgian dishes like moules and frites and rare cheese plates on the "Belgian side", as well as a full lunch and dinner menu on the "other side". Add to this Sat & Sun brunch, Sunday NFL ticket and this place makes great strides toward being the perfect NYC beer bar.
This place is really cool. Perhaps the top beer selection in the 5 boroughs. Good pub fare, great juke box and really friendly, beer knowledgeable bartenders.
