If you ride the Amtrak train east from Amsterdam, you pass a large brick building with "Bowler's Brewery" painted on the side in six-foot high block letters. The paint is faded but still visible. I did a Google search on "bowler's brewery amsterdam, ny" and came up with a February 15, 1920 NY Times article about the Bowler Brewing Company of Amsterdam receiving their federal permit to make beer. But they must go back much further because another article about a train wreck in Amsterdam across from the Bowler Brewery is dated 1918. And you are guessing that the Bowler's inscription on the bar is circa 1880.

Great Great Great Great Great
Ryan's Wake is a good hometown type of bar. Great times to be had either during Happy Hour or late into the evening. The bar staff are friendly and attentive. The owner takes pride in his establishment and it shows. Grilled sandwiches are the main thing on the menu and they are the best in the area.

This is THE place to go to be with friends or meet new ones. Check your attitude at the door here. And no snooty bartenders to look down their noses at you either. This is a classic Irish pub supported by the fact that a Murphy’s Red Ale commercial was filmed here two weeks after opening with the producer saying it was the most authentic one he’s seen. Fourteen taps (for now) with a great lineup of Newcastle, Bass Ale, Guinness, Smithwick’s, Magic Hat, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada Harvest and Pale Ales, Boddington’s, Paulaner, Stella Artois, Woodchuck, UC, and Coors Light (oh well). There are also dozens of bottles but with that tap lineup who needs them.

Publican Chris knows how to do things right and runs a good ship. The local college tribe tried their luck here and were promptly shown the door – no idiots allowed. The woodwork of the bar hails from Amsterdam NY circa the 1880’s. An inscription saying “Bowlers” is on the underside. If anyone knew of a place back then (vis-à-vis a great, great grandfather or the like) Chris would appreciate hearing about it.

Happy hour: $2.50 drafts and $2.50 well drinks M-F 4-7 PM. UC is always $2.00 in respect for Chris’ home town. Plenty of parking on the street or in the lot next door after 4:00 PM (or all day Saturday and Sunday). One lonely plasma TV in the corner, but no one comes here to watch TV anyway. The menu on the chalkboard is somewhat limited, but the panini bread sandwiches are the best anywhere. If you just want to munch they have great cheese board as well as two shrimp specials. Chris built this place from the ground up with his sweat, heart and soul, and it shows. Gentlemen – sneak your ladies into the men’s room and show them the urinals (now there’s a strange request). Uh, someone here has a hobby for classic fixtures!

The bottom line is this is a classic pub straight out of NY City or Boston, and there’s nothing close between here and there. If you come in the door, show your respect - It will be returned ten-fold.
