A fledgling on the scene this place should do pretty well. They had 8 house and 4 guest taps to choose from. Went with a pint each of the Freetail Amber, Hop Brutality and Torper Porter. Excellent in all regards. Food menu does focus on sandwiches and wood-fired pizza but my turkey BLT was great. The downside, if any, is it's about 10 miles north of d'town San Antonio but that seems to be where most of the people live. Listening to the banter on either side of the bar, there's a lot of passion for their craft. Good sign.

Visiting in San Antonio, had to visit the microbreweries. Freetail Brewery was a little difficult to find due to some new construction in the area but was well worth the search. As a homebrewer, few microbreweries live up to my expectation. Freetail did have a good selection of their brews as well as other Texas beers on draft. All their beers were decent with no flawed aftertastes for the style. They just weren't as flavorful as I would have expected. The food was good but small portions. The waitress was very personable, knowledgable about her beers and attentive to our needs.

Wow the only other review had me all excited to go to Free Tail as rarely do you see "Awesome!" used to describe everything. I guess that should have been a clue. Either things have changed drastically in five months or the review was done by an employee. Three of us were in on a recent early Saturday afternoon. First and foremost the place really just doesn't have any atmosphere. It is on the end of a strip mall and is filled with chairs and tables on an open floor. Yawn. Nice view I guess but nothing else. There was a nice list of beers to choose from however and hopes soared high. I ordered a sampler, which consisted of 5 4 oz beers. I didn't take notes, but as I recall they were a blonde, a rye wit, a pale ale, another ale of unknown style and a saison. My friends tried the stout and the porter in addition to the beers in my sampler. In my opinion this is just another sad case where a brewpub is afraid to offend anyone and the beers, regardless of style are bland. It was very difficult to tell one from the next and I found that I actually enjoyed none of the beers to the extent that I would drink more then one. My two friends agreed. Overall a very disappointing experience. Won't be going back.

The food here is amazing although it offers more snacks/pizza then any sit down and eat dinners. The beer they brew is amazing they have the best porter i have had in texas. They offer other beers on tap which all are from texas which is neat. The service was good and the people are very friendly and informative, much better then blue star.
