We played golf at the Old Trail GC in Crozet and then hit the Blue Mountain and Devil's Backbone breweries. I liked both, for different reasons. Overall Blue Mountain's beers were better..but the bright, shiny new bar room failed to make full use of its dramatic setting, although you can take your beer outside to the tables in the hop-vine filled garden.
On the other hand, Devil's Backbone has to be housed in one of the most dramatic, high-end new brewery facilities in the US...and the food and 8-point IPA weren't bad either! Located on the valley floor below the Wintergreen resort, and under to looming Blue Ridge Mountains, you'd have a hard time finding a more upscale and dramatic setting. Afterward we drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway for a spectacular drive back to Charlottesville at sunset.

This scenic brewpub in the valley had 4 standard house beers, 4 seasonals on rotation, and two guest taps. Their Ale of Fergus is a different recipe in each release, an interesting twist to what started out as a 90 shilling Scottish style ale. IPA was good, if a bit sharp. Saisson was very good as a Belgian golden but lacked spiciness. The bar uses the proper glassware for each style. They bought a batch of used mechanics' shirts and sewed the brewpub logo on the back. Overall this is a remote yet high quality operation. Good looking layout, good variety and very good, creative beers. Worth the extra miles.

I read in the Washington Post about this place near Wintergreen Resort and stopped by on Valentines Day while I was in the area. It is quite remote, in a new lodge-like building--very attractive and very busy. Their beers tend toward German styles, with some Belgians and English. They have a couple of samplers, one with their year-round beers and one with their seasonals. Among the year-round selections I preferred the Eight Point IPA, an from the seasonals I liked the Black Bear Russian Imperial Stout. I had the enchiladas from the menu and thought they were OK, but nothing special.
