Bar owner myself from out of town. This is old school atmosphere. Also a firefighter and enjoyed the ties with FDNY--VERY classy!!!. Food was great (Ribs). It was my first time to NYC and I managed to stop in several times throughout my visit. Loved the micro brew also. I figured it was a good place to eat after seeing a few well known celebrities at the table next to me. I'll be back again!!!

Even Though the Bar was closed when we visisted (Noon on a Tues) the Lady in charge was incredibly obliging;letting us in to take photo's and serving us with 2 very tasty 'chumley' ales (stout & wheat). Please search it out,be careful not to walk past.

From rural Alaska so I found NYC a tad overwhelming to say the least, but Chumleys totally brought on a strange deja-vu meets Alice in Wonderland vibe, especially in getting there, the secret door was very cool, 86 Bedford is def. a place to go for unequaled ambiance and nice folks, some of them even native New Yorkers...

fantastic and charming litte place in Greenwich Village. We were guided to it from a mention in the Rough Guide, and were not only not disappointed, we were charmed. Not only was the food great, but I sampled a couple of the beers: the Red in honour of the late Captain of the FD, and the amazing Sun Rye (I hope I have remebered the name correctly). We were served by a lovely young lady with blonde hair whose name I have unfortunately forgotten - if she is reading this let me know, you made our visit a very special one!
As far as I can remember, this establishment does brew its own beer, but not on the premises.

My Husband and I were in New York with The "LA Heat" Firemens Football Team to play "New Yorks Finest" we went to Chumleys after the game and had great food and had an Awsome time. The service was fantastic and the people who worked there were wonderful. The next time we are in New York we will definitely be back to Chumley's!

I'm a regular; been bringing friends to Chumleys for years. Once I was treated so badly by a waitress I was angry for days, yet days ago my two year old daughter and I were treated like royalty. If you've experienced bad service you probably came on a bad night.

Very good burger, but a bit pricy. Nice selection of beer, but quality was only ok. The atmosphere is fantastic though. Especially if you go on an off-time when it isn't jammed elbow to elbow.

It's been stated here before, but the place really is about the atmsophere. However, that atmosphere is best appreciated during the day. At night (particularly on the weekends), it can get obnoxiously crowded.

Have been going to Chumley's on and off since 1950. The priceless dust jackets framed on the wall instigated my collecting authors of represented. It used to be darker, but I suppose in these litigous times there must be light. Hopefully, it won't be ruined with overkill. The schlock enlarged pictures of authors is getting to be too much. It really isn't necessary to cover every inch of available space. Food is about the same as it has always been, very good. It has never been great, but it is better than just good. I always take guests to New York to visit, and they always appreciate it.

Don't come for the beer. There are plenty to choose from but I have yet to sample one that is any better than average. Haven't tried the food but have heard plenty of grumbles from diners about the service. Come here for the atmosphere and the fun of finding it and leaving through the "secret door". It still has a speakeasy feel to it. Well worth a stop on a pub crawl of Greenwich Village.

ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE ATMOSPHERE !!! That is the ONLY reason to go there !! Going in throught the "secret" door is just too cool !! Plus it is fun to "86 it out of there" through the other door. (that door's address is 86) The place is so neat looking inside and being there on fleet week with lots of navy boys in uniform made it even more nostalgic. TOTALLY AWESOME !! HOWEVER, I bought 4 beers, and returned two of them after one swig, because they were as flat as a pancake!! The beers that weren't flat tasted stale and old... EUCH !! Go there to check it out but then 86 it out !! Great stop on the pub crawl we were on (e-mail me for the greenwich village pub crawl details!!) Be sure to ask what is under the trap door in the floor in front of the bar !!

Atmosphere is definitely the draw here. Despite its speakeasy charm, the utter lack of pretense is hard to find at New York bars.

Great atmosphere but restaurant service was terrible. Host and waitress were kinda rude. They even asked us to move tables after we were there about 1/2 hour! Stick with the bar area - very friendly, nice crowd. Just don't get a table!!

Great old place to visit with a unique atmosphere unlike any other. It's especially cool in the late fall and winter when the fireplace is lit. I'll bet the guy from Denver can't find a place like this locally, nor the "surprising[ly]" nice people...except for maybe at Burger King, McDonalds, TGI Fridays, etc. which is all they have out there.

You are only there for the atmosphere if you can actually find this place. It's an interesting place to swing an out-of-towner through for the "speakeasy" aspect. Your best bet, unless you are a Red Hook fan, is a glass of water.

An interesting place to visit, if you can find it. The beers tasted like their lines were dirty last visit. The waitresses are very nice. Haven't tried the food. I usually just pass through. I recommend you do the same.

This is a nice place in the west village. It has a typical beer hall atmosphere, old carved up tables that everybody could share, Bavarian Style. It is the same bar as the speakeasy that was there during prohibition, or so its billed. The beer selection was mostly Red Hook products on tap with minor but unnotable selections. The service was adaquate and friendly, surprising for new york. I thought the prices were high, especially for Red Hook products, but my local relatives disagree.
