We always get REALLY friendly service here. Their beers aren't AMAZING, but they're all good and they usually have a very good selection. The place has a really nice vibe and the staff makes you feel comfortable. The spinach dip is WHAT...so good.

Upstairs and downstairs bars both with wide-screen TV's. The downstairs bar top was nicely done in marble. This place has been renovated and like a few I saw in Portland is a bit "yuppy." They lost that neighborhood comfortable feeling....Close to Union Station.

This was another stop during my recent visit (Oregon Brewers Festival); in fact, Bridgeport was the first target hit upon arrival - it being under renovation during my previous visit in November 2005.

Located in Portland's Pearl District, or warehouse district more likely, BP is situated in a reconverted warehouse; you enter into a large, open, multi-storied, brickwalled space that is bisected by a steel staircase (leading upstairs to Bridgeport's only bar and restrooms).

On the left is a dining area with tables; to the right, as you enter, is a smaller dining area decked out with tables and high-tops. Off to the side is a bakery set-up with tantalizing sweets, but I was there for the beer. There is a walk up bar in the back for ordering. It sort of reminded me of many of the pubs in Prague - but I digress. Outside on what was once the loading dock is a patio for outdoor drinking - guess it still is a "loading" dock after all. Anyway sit, relax and watch the construction across the street.

The beer, their beer, is served fresh in Imperial pint glasses. A thirsty patron has about eight taps from which to choose; I enjoyed the tasty Blue Heron, the IPA and on cask: Ropewalk and Haymaker, the latter being an amber ale. Please note: they also had their hop heavy (100+ IBU) Hop Czar, which I sampled the following day at OBF - I did go back a second time for another. Mybad.

Efficient service meant my glass was never empty. Bridgeport has an excellent weekday Happy Hour when pints are $2.75.

Off course, being in the aforementioned Pearl District, Bridgeport Brewing is accessible by the beloved Portland Streetcar; it runs east on Lovejoy (1 block south) and west on Northrup (1 block north), so you can catch it either way. Check out the sign in front by the door; it provides notification of the streetcar arrival/departures. I heard that they adopted a stop. How sweet. Enjoy it during your next Portland visit.

So So Good N/A Good Good
Overall this is a very good looking place. When I parked out front and got out of my rental car there was a wonderful smell of a beer being boiled coming out of the brewery. I sat in the bar area and ordered a sampler. The beers for the most part are rather mainstream as far as brew pubs go.

Mind you... There was nothing wrong with any of the beers and they were pretty good examples of the styles that they were portrayed as being.

That being said however the envelope was not really being pushed on any of the beers. Craft beers are special because they have the ability to be above and beyond what we know of as commercial beers. Bridgeport beers seem to be going for that "Commercial" taste in a small craft environment. This will get them in the main stream but probably leave the beer geeks wanting something more.

The IPA was rather good as was the knuckle head barley wine. Good stuff all around.

I miss the old Bridgeport, being able to belly up and order pizza and beer. Somewhere you could have a large group of friends meet and not have to worry about a tab because it was pay as you go.

Went for Science night recently which was great but it took so long for my food, only one wait staff in a room of 200?

In light of the comments by the reviewer below, guess I'm fortunate not to have seen the "old" Bridgeport. But that review hardly even addresses the beer issues, and that's what this site is supposed to be about. Bridgeport has opted for low-end malt and IBUs on all styles compared with Rogue and Laurelwood. This reduces production costs, but also yields less memorable brews. That said, the beers will be very satisfactory to those who prefer such styles. They do have a real bakery in conjunction with the pub, but as was pointed out, no pretzels or light vittles to consume while tasting different styles. The price of the sampler, at $7, was quite reasonable, and we were able to get some oyster crackers from our waitress to munch while working the sampler. However, most of the menu is geared toward high end (read 'price') appetizers more geared to an Applebee's or Chili's. Our server was almost too attentive, and was probably disappointed we there only to try the beer. An application of the old mantra that "the restaurants make their profit on the alcohol, while the waitstaff make theirs on the food".

For what it's worth, I was in Portland last weekend and walked over to the brewery to see what the state of the renovation was. There were people walking in and out, so thinking it had opened back up, I walked inside. The hostess stated that they were doing practice runs for the new waitstaff and kitchen, but would open officially on Feb 23rd, in the meantime I could go ahead and have a look around.

First impression?

They took one of the best spaces in the country to sit, drink beer, read a paper, have casual conversation, etc., and absolutely, completely, and utterly _ruined_ it.

I can not express how depressing it was.

For those not familiar with the Pearl District where it's located, this section of Portland used to be a gritty industrial warehouse area. Indeed, the Bridgeport Brewery is located in an old rope factory. In the last few years however, the Pearl has been a neighborhood in transition as it's been zoned for condo development. The development is quite impressive. High density in an urban core with lots of open space. Certainly a model that other cities should emulate. However, Portland is a very artsy city (visit any McMenamin's building for example). And with the arts and urban environment comes a certain amount urban hip.

Bridgeport has decided to embrace the urban hip design elements completely.

Gone are the wood tables with comfortable wood chairs that you could sit in for hours. In are brushed steel chest high tables, with backless black steel stools with 8" square seats. Pray tell, how are we supposed to sit on that and enjoy a beer or two or three?

Gone is the wood bar with 5 english beer engines prominently displayed up front. In, is this god-awful ugly corrugated steel bar with steel bartop and a tap assembly that looks like the glycol chiller has gone stark raving mad (each tap array was covered in a 1/4" layer of ice and frost). Gone is the notion that there's a proper serving temperature for a Bridgeport ale. The beer engines are now hidden behind the bar, and they've reduced the number to 3. I couldn't find them at first, I had to ask if they were still serving cask consitioned ale. A massive step backward.

Gone is the pretzel jar where you could get a little paper bowl of pretzels for 10 cents on the honor system. In is a menu of trendy food the same as you'll find at a dozen other Pearl district eateries.

Gone is the come-as-you-are, sit-whereever-you-want, order-food-or-don't we don't care atmosphere. In are model-like hostesses who greet you at the door and escort you to one of the brushed steel, uncomfortable chair tables where you are expected to order food, eat it, and get out.

Gone is the eclectic assortment of newspapers and bulletins you could find to read and pass the time as you savored their excellent cask selections. In, is the menu, as there's nothing else to read and certainly no space or comfort on the tiny little tables? Did I mention how much yet I hate those tables and chairs?

To stick the knife in and twist, to rub salt in the open wounds, they've torn out portions of the second floor. In so doing they had to cut and remove the massive wooden beams that ran across the first floor ceiling. These were beams that reeked history, beams that oozed character, beams cut from old growth wood, incredibly valuable material. Gone. Discarded. All in the name of "upgrading" the space so that it could be a carbon copy of every other establishment in the Pearl district. Shameful. Completely and utterly shameful.

The old Bridgeport was a truely unique space set in the context of the historic building it occupied. A place where a beer lover could come and be assured that the beer was served properly and that the staff wouldn't rush you out. The new Bridgeport is a clone of everything else in the Pearl. A place that turns it's back on the history of it's building, and place that pushes commerce over beer, a place that I now have no desire to return to.

I hate what they've done with the place. It used to be a cool brewpub, now it's a sterile, trendy restaurant. Not my kind of place, but if that's what you're into....

It's got it all: good beer, food and atmosphere. Had the IPA and the pale ale, both of which were very good. The pizza for lunch was delicious and too large for one. I loved the space too. The bartender was very friendly and helpful, with suggestions for me as an out of towner. Check it out!

I went to the brewery before it was redone and it was not pleasant. It was run down and dingy. The seating was horrible. Yes, the atmosphere now might seem a little sterile, but it is balanced with the historical warehouse it's in. The food and service are amazing. The atmosphere will improve with time, especially after the construction on the building next door is over. Food quality is awesome, but the lunch menu is a on the basic side. Bridgeport IPA is the best IPA anywhere.

Awesome! Good Good So So So So
Like most of Portland, we were dying for the grand re-opening. And like most of Portland, were we ever disappointed (see the glut of negative reviews at portland.citysearch.com/profile/8462852/portland_or/bridgeport_brewpub_bakery.html) to see what I mean). The beer is still top-notch, but a place that was so cool to hang out and have a slice of pizza is now a sanitized corporate place. Dick Ponzi would be rolling over in his grave, if he were dead. In a few years no one will remember the old Bridgeport, and this place will have "awesome" right across the board. So if you were never at the old one, or if you prefer "nice" to well-worn, by all means get here. You'll love it. (I will say that the food being grilled out on the dock in back is a bright spot. I liked the old dock better, but the new dock is still better than indoors).

Went to 13 brewpubs/breweries in one week 4/29-5/6, so I cannot write too much for each one, but "Beervanna" is the appropriate name for Portland. Every BP, beerbar we went to was top notch and friendly with great to awesome beers and service with few exception- the ones filled with smoke. But overall, compared to east coast, Portland is THE place for real beer lovers to spend at least a week. And we only did 2 McMenamins. Fly to Portland, grab an offcial beer map, hop on public transit (every BP was on a bus/tram/train line or a short walk) and have a beer blast!

Having visited Bridgeport several times prior to the remodel, I am thoroughly disappointed with what they have done. They took a great neighborhood pub and turned it into another sterile, modern, steel and concrete Pearl District hangout. This was a place that used to have character, personality, a place you felt you could relax in. Now.....well, what more can I say. The only positive side is that the quality of the beer is still great, and you can get a cask IPA. But I would recommend having one at the Hawthorne Street pub, not here.

The bridgeport has good beer and food. The remodel is very pearl district chic. Downstairs is a good place to have a pint. Upstairs is pretty plain and the tables appear to be out of an elementary school. Wouldnt be my first place to go.

I am pained to write anything negative about Bridgeport, the pub, which for me has been the archetype since I first darkened the door in 1990. Alas, the remodel is complete and they've ripped out the soul and character of the place. Make no mistake, the beer is top notch, a porter and IPA on cask at the same time, perfect on a March afternoon. Perfect also for a slice of pizza. Remember pizza by the slice, me too, but memories are all that are left, now you have to buy the whole pie. Mind where you sit too, you cannot have the pizza upstairs on the comfortable sofa, you cannot have the pizza where the long wooden tables used to be, you have to eat it in the designated section. May the saints help you if you try to order in one place and move to another. Do you remember the cartoons above the two best urinals in the whole town? Yeah they did move the urinals to the new restrooms, but this is no longer a place with cartoons on the wall, this is no longer a place with anything on the walls. A member of my party said it reminded him of being in Berlin, which seemed particularly apropos. For my part I had the distinct feeling that they were not catering to beer drinkers. The bartender knew her stuff and was great, but the servers just didn't know about beer or why it was special. It actually hurt to listen to them try to explain cask to folks at another table, although to their credit they were apologetic about “all the rules.” Gone also is the dartboard, there does not appear to be any seating on the loading dock and there is nothing to read, unlike the old days when they had papers available for patrons. Instead they now have one of those annoying people behind a lectern at the front door to direct you, which I suppose is important given all of the new rules. This used to be the perfect place to catch a cask pint on a lazy afternoon, meet up with friends, and it was The place to take any serious beer lover, now I guess I'll take them to the Tugboat. All that said, they still make great beer, wonderful beer, beer to write home about, but the pub is long gone, replaced by Pearl District chic, and it just makes me sad.

Visited the Alehouse for lunch a couple of days ago and had the cask IPA - it was great, but I think the keg version is even better (it's a little hoppier). Also had a bowl of soup (chipotle fish stew) which was very good. Large selection of their beers, a little out of the way from downtown, but in an interesting area (the Hawthorne section).

The brewery is closed for renovations but the ale house at 36 ave and hawthorne is a great place with excellent beer. The IPA is outstanding and food was pretty good. Nice atmosphere.

Sadly the Brewpup is closed for renovations. I will miss the rough hewn beams and the picnic tables. Gave the place its own uniqueness from the rest of the P-land Brewpubs. Looking forward to the New Grand Opening and drinking some finely crafted Firkin Beers!

The Brewpub is closed until late 2005 for complete remodel. However, look for their very good IPA in town.

It's true that there is no wait staff or bar seating but this place but go go go! I was treated like a king! I arrived right after lunch and the place was empty. I got a tour by the head brewer, pizza by the slice--CHEAP! and great beer. The Bridgport Blackstrap IPA is great as was the Bridgport Porter. This was a place that made me wish I lived close by.

Low alohol in the IPA means you can sip that extra pint. Adjust your palate and enjoy one of the best beers in the USA. I din't try the other beers but I'm told the porter is excellent, but why bother with anything but the IPA?
