Friendly, small neighborhood establishment. Owner James is knowledgeable and careful in his selections. Taps always changing, great variety.
Excellent chef too! Good food for omnivores and vegetarians.

A neighborhood establishment. Owners take pride in the constantly-changing beer selection.
The food is delicious - they are lucky to have such a good chef.

Got to make my first visit to Commerical Tap recently and I certainly hope it won't be my last. 12 taps or so, 1 cask. The place is funky, cozy, perfectly dark. Interior is well-worn, lots of wood, tin ceiling; a nice look. Lunch is T-F until 2, then reopens a few hours later. Starr Hill on cask was very nice; Cindy, my bartender was a real ale enthusiast (smokin' hot, too!) and a great conversation partner. Fish and chips were good, just greasy enough to make you want some more beverage. Want to try the place out when the regular crowd piles in later in the day--I'm betting it's great!

Great beer selection. You can tell the owner cares about the beer. The first night I had a good german lager(Bitburger) which was replaced the next night with a high hopped american lager(?). Disappointed? Slightly, but this guy rotates his selection frequently. You can always find something to suit your taste.
The ambiance is dark and sorta shabby, but I like dark and shabby. The bartender was extremely helpful, and the place is packed with friendly regulars. It's not exclusionary.

I have to confess at the top that I am a regular at this place and Sunday-Thursdays you can find my wife and me waiting for it to open up. She had the second beer sold there and I had the third. I have pruned a lot of brain cells there and will be back as soon as possible.
If you are not familiar with Richmond, the Taphouse is a neighborhood bar that serves really solid food. James and Jim, the owners, pride themselves on their beers. They have 14 on tap (it is a really small place)and due to the trade of regulars and friends the kegs turn over rapidly. Ask to see the "Beer Menu" and be amused by Jim's descriptions of what is on tap or stored in bottles. The kitchen knocks out great ribs, onion rings and a hamburger platter that will make you want to beg for a doggie bag. They have daily specials including a pizza made with whatever fresh vegetables are in for that day and have a Beer Dinner on Tuesday nights about once a month or so, each course accompanied by a beer that complements the food. In the mid $20s per person, it is a good time.
It is open from 4:30 PM to 1:00ish and they have just started a lunch trade from noon to 2:30 PM Tue.-Friday. Sunday nights feature live music from groups willing to perform in a phonebooth, lots of jazz, rock & crossover country. I skip that because I enjoy the Taphouse in the early hours and am likely to be snoozing or watching Deadwood on Sundays.
If you would enjoy a place that features lots of fresh, great beer (including one cask beer, hand pumped from the basement), good eats and good company (looking for a barfight? Walk down the street!) drop by and see what you think. If you like it, keep it to yourself-lets just keep this between us.
THE GUYS WHO SIT IN NORM AND CLIFF'S SEATS
P.S. Brandon is long gone, James T. bartends Mondays and Wednesdays, the ladies take up the slack the rest of the time. Matt and Bill kick ass in the cooking dept.!

Commercial Tap House has a determinedly downscale feel; you almost get the feeling that they smack anyone who tries to "spruce up" the place. It's very basic in decor, but the beer and service and vibe are anything but. There was a slump here a few years ago, and I was bumming, but it sure seems like the Tap is back, stronger than ever. The tap selection recently was quite strong.
If Legend is too focused for you, or Capital Ale House is too pretty for you, or if you don't know about Zippy's, Commercial Tap is the ticket. Maybe you'll get lucky like we did, and walk in during a cross-dressing murder mystery!

Man, I miss this place. This six block walk for great beers is now a 4 1/2 hour drive but I always stop in when I'm in town to see what James, Jim and Brandon are drawing.

Used to have best Buffalo wings in Richmond, they've slipped in recent times. My favorite Richomond pub! Friendly & knowledgable bartenders and very solid selection

The Taphouse does a great job of presenting a wide variety of styles and rotating the selections. The lines are clean and the beer is fresh. The staff is very knowledgeable and the monthly beer dinners are a special treat. Three courses are paired with two styles of beer each (who said beer wasn't for dessert?). Owner Jim Dickerson guides you through the night... Sweet dreams!

Good local pub with very fresh beer but they they tend to be inconsistent. Two recent visits, during normal hours, found the doors closed with no explanation. Not a good way to build customers.
