I lived a block from the Big Time back in the early '90's. It was, and is, the perfect brewpub. The crowd was always the perfect mix of college kids, graduate students, working folks and old-timers. The bartenders were young and engaging and upbeat and knowledgable about the brews. It was never dead, but never packed and loud, either. You want to sit and read a magazine and drink a few pints, or watch the ball game, or hang out with a few friends and order pitchers and talk? It was perfect for all those. It has a nice, airy, well-lit front room, and a more intimate, high-backed booth back room. It was a good place to be social or disappear for a bit into a book and a pint. After a beer steamed hotdog and 3 pints of Prime Time Pale Ale, I always slept like a baby. They had beer to go, but why would anyone want to leave?

The Big Time is as great as ever. Almost biggish, high ceilings -- pretty nice rooms, actually. Yeah, you walk for each round, but who cares? The beers are always interesting, and some of the nicer bartenders in town (super-efficient service is great and all; TBT tends more toward the conversant-and-fairly-efficient. Well...the kitchen's kinda grumbly). The pizza and nachos are fine; they're on the passable end of the pub grub spectrum. You can probably find something to eat nearby (Indian, Brazilian) and then head here. Walking around is part of the fun in the U-District, right? Great place for a pitcher before a good flick.

I've been to over 200 breweries and brewpubs and Big Time is still one of my absolute favorites. The beer is always very, very good. I especially like being able to get cask conditioned ale on a regular basis. Of all the beers I've had at Bigtime I'd have to say my favorites are Bhagwan's Best IPA and Old Rip Oatmeal Stout. And Lift Ticket and Hopgoblin Pumpkin (when in season).

When I went to school at UW, this was my favorite hangout. Quiet enough normally to read a book or lively enough to keep you there for hours. The shuffleboard only gets better as the beers go down, kind of like bowling. They have daily specials on the food; make their own chili using the beer, and have awesome pizza. Worth a stop whenevr you're in town.

When I moved here, I had a few different apartments that I could have taken & I choose one w/in stumbling distance to Big Time. It is definitely a college bar, but not that many undergrads hang out here & there is a large contingent of 40 - 60 year old regulars here - a pretty good balance. The beers are all pretty highly hopped, and during the summers they often run 4 different IPAs. The Scarlet Fire is my personal favorite IPA - grapefruit notes, very hoppy, but really there is not a bad beer on tap. The Old Wooley barley wine is one of the very best I have ever had, the Baghwan's Best IPA is a nice hoppy northwest style IPA, the Old Rip is a nice full-bodied stout and there is always something on the handpump. I am surprised that more beer people don't know about this place - I would definitely rate this as the consistently 2nd best brewpub in Seattle (The Elysian would be first) - others may put out a good beer or two of a particular style, but only a couple even approach the quality & breadth of Big Time.
Some people may be turned off by having to stand in line & order food from the kitchen (& pay there) separately from the bar - it is kind of a pain. The food really is nothing special, go for the beer!

When I was in college, I would have killed to have had a place like this near by--but then I went to Southwest Baptist U so that would have never happened. Anyway, they certainly cater to the college crowd--and it depresses me to admit this, but I guess I'm too old for that anymore. Servers were very pleasant--but when I was there, no table service so for each beer or food, you're standing in line at the counter--that way you do know how your beer is affecting you when you stand up! The beers were ok but tended to be sweeter than I like and the reviews that I read. It has been a while since I was there so some things may have changed--future visitors please take that into consideration. On tap the day I was there: cask conditioned IPA, ESB, Coal Creek Porter, Summerbreak blond, Bhagwana Best IPA, Prime Time Pale Ale, Mie Bock (there's more to the name but I can't read my notes), Old Rip Oatmeal stout and Amber. I liked the porter best as it was the least sweet of those I tried. The IPA had a floral aftertaste that gave it a sweet flavor to me. The oatmeal stout was smokey with a full hearty flavor--that I like--but it too was too sweet for my taste.

A brewpub lover's brewpub, laid back and comfy with no pretension and superbly crafted beers. On my last visit they had FOUR IPAS, all great examples of the Northwest style, including their signature Baghwans Best on cask. If BigTime were in my neighborhood I would rarely be at home!

The Big Time is one of our favorite places in Seattle. The Baghwan's Best IPA is certainly the most consistent, excellent tasting beer in the Northwest. If you can, go there on Dec. 1st for the BEST barley wine out there--OLD WOOLY! The pizza is also pretty darn good. And the bar staff is always good for a bit of conversation.

I was lucky enough to find this place 11 years ago and it's still one of my very favorites. The beers are fantastic, the food is average pub fare, but who's in it for the food ? I still regularly fight the bridge in rush hour traffic just to stop by for a beer or two. It's an awesome and eclectic place !!

Been here a couple dozen times. Very cordial bartenders. Excellent selection (10+ brews at all times) and interesting seasonals. Come for the beer, not the food. And take the bus - don't try to park in the U-District. The walk down the "Ave" helps set the tone of this friendly neighborhood pub. Ask to see the tie drawer.

I give this place a great rating because of the atmosphere. A true college town establishment that cateres to a wide selection of people. The service on the night I was there was outstanding. The menu id very limited however, and the food is fair. Beers: Coal Creek Porter - very decent representation of a Porter; Yule Tide Christmas Ale - very tasty, bit malty with trace of spice; Redemption Nitrogen Ale - extremely hoppy/bitter; Liberty Hops Hopfest - sweet and hoppy; Atlas Amber Ale - too hoppy; Bhagwhans Best IPA - excellent!! Does have a smoking section.

Great big hoppy brews. Multiple ales, as well as porters and stouts. Great selection. Must be great to have a real brewbub that brews great brews in your town. The atmosphere was good also. 10 selections, all to make a pubcrawler proud. I enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the overall experience.

11 choices--pretty impressive. I tried the Dark Wheat and the Porter, which were fine but especially distinctive. The bartender, who obviously had been around awhile, was friendly and helpful.

The amber was very good. The babyback ribs a little overdone but were salvaged with the BBQ sauce. Crab Bisque was cold. Server was very attentive and friendly.
