I'm a local and have been going to 99 Bottles for quite some time. In fact, I even have a 99 Bottles beer card. It's a good place to go to have a beer, local (for me), adn the food is decent as a decent price. Nothing great - but I love beer and this place has the best selection in town.
However, the service is, on average, pretty poor. Yeah, I've had good service there, but that's the exception. I've been going to 99 Bottles for several years and not much has changed. If you go there, EXPECT POOR SERVICE. Period. This is pretty much common knowledge for locals. I wish this were not the case, b/c otherwise I enjoy the place.
Take this evening for example. I just got back from 99 (which promted this review). I ordered a green salad and a beer - it took her two times to get my beer order. (And a salad! No cooking involved!).
I was finished with my beer (and I was trying to go slow since I hadn't eaten much today) by the time my salad arrived. In fact, by the time my green salad had arrived, I had already made up my mind to tell the bartender, "forget it, just let me pay for the one beer, I'm outta here!".
I also noticed that even BEFORE I had gotten my salad the bartender had given me my check for the salad and one beer! Huh?!?!?!?!!
However, since the next time I saw her, she came towards me salad in hand, I thought, "okay, fine." After 25 minutes I have a plate of raw veggies. So I ordered another beer.
Before I had finished the beer, I put my bank card in the little glass with the check. There it sat for 20-30 minutes. She walked by, back and forth. I got up and used the restroom. Nope. So I put the card back in my wallet and was about to leave, without paying. FINALLY, she looked at the glass, then looked at me. I told her that I had had my card sitting in the glass for over 20 minutes. She just grabbed it and ran. Needless to say I offered no tip.
IN SUMMARY: The food is decent, the prices are okay...but expect to wait. And wait a long time! (Unless you're me and know one of the waitresses that'll actually give you better service). If you're not in a hurry and want a good selection of beers, go to 99 Bottles. It's a nice place in a good location. If you're time limited or just not a patient person. Forget it. 99 Bottles will drive you crazy.

If you plan on going to Santa Cruz & not visiting 99 Bottles, you may as well stay home. You haven't lived until you have had the Quesadilla with a nice dark beer. The service is so good they are like family!

I used to live in S.C. and 99 Bottles was my favorite place to go. The owners and staff were always down to earth and honestly friendly. The food was great (especially the "99 (pita) Pockets" and the chicken tenders) and of course the wide selection of beers were too! I have not been there since 2002, so I don't know if this place has changed any. I hope it hasn't! I have many fond memories and I hope to make it back there some day!

99 Bottles is the best beer destination in Santa Cruz hands down. This famous place was a filming location for MTV's Fraternity Life 2 and was an answer for a question on Jeopardy. The food is excellent as well.

I try to make it in here everytime I hit Santa Cruz. They need Bell's products from Michigan, then they will be complete.

Every draught comes in a stupid american pint glass. What ever happened to the unique service of drinking a beer in the intended glass?! Blah.

Over 40 taps dedicated to a mix of West Cosst craft beers and imports, with a couple of ciders and a draft root beer. Many more choices in bottles. I seized the opportunity to try a couple of pints from breweries I had not done before - Fire Rock Pale Ale from Kona Brewing, and Hemp Ale from Humbolt Brewing (an excellent malty, nutty red ale). The menu featured many of the usual pub items and some more interesting sandwiches and other choices as well. My Philly Chicken Cheese sandwich with waffle fries was excellent (although nothing like what I would expect to find in PA). Almost certainly the best beer selection in Santa Cruz.

Like the name says, they have 99 different beers, about 40 on tap. Not really an outstanding selection given all those beers. Too many light "commercial" beers, Stella, Rolling Rock, etc. Only about three stouts and one porter in the whole list. I only ate half the fish & chips I ordered because it wasn't really worth finishing. I sat at the bar and the service was absolutely horrible. The place was busy and the bar tender couldn't even remember one thing at a time.

Very nice selection of average to good beers....not many exotics or belgiums. Service can be average to awful, go for the beer not the service (typical santa cruz)...food is good pub grub, try the blue cheese burger.
