Beer selection was very good. I ordered a 1/2 glass and they served it in a school cafeteria style 8 oz glass. Not very appealing. Beer tasted fine however. The food selection was somewhat meager and somewhat average. Not as good as most brewpubs I visit. They need to be more customer responsive.

CHEERS!!!!!
Goose has renewed its lease at the Clybourn location for another 3-4 years.
Went there last Saturday, after hearing the good news I tried a Pilgrim Pale, an Aviator Dobblebock, and several IPA's.
Thanks to be god that I do not have to drive to Wrigleyville to enjoy some Goose.

Our bartender said it is more than likely that they are closing! It will be a shame to lose this place, it is such a great place to drink and eat. I had their 20th Anniversary ale and the red ale. I really liked the red it was nicely hopped and balanced well.

Don't lose hope yet, folks. Rumor has it that GI and the landlord are back at the negotiating table. They may be able to strike a deal yet. In the meantime, stop in for a pint, and stay tuned...

Great food, FANTASTIC beers, excellent service.
I travel all the time on business and find brewpubs everywhere I go. This is by FAR the best brewpub I've ever found (Great Lakes Brewing in Cleveland is probably 2nd). Get to GI on Clybourn before the end of 2008 while they still have the location. What a shame to lose such a fantastic place! :-(

Well at least the bottling operations will keep going, and the Wrigleyville location will remain open. But it's just not quite the same...

I've been a Goose Island MBA for 10 years. Now their Clybourn location is closing:
http://www.suntimes.com/business/893532,gooseisland041408.article
Goose Island loses lease, to close its Clybourn spot April 14, 2008
BY DAVID ROEDER Staff Reporter
Goose Island Beer Co. said Monday it will close its original brewpub at 1800 N. Clybourn by year-end because it has lost its lease.
The Chicago-based company, founded at the Clybourn site in 1988, will continue to operate its Wrigleyville Brewpub at 3535 N. Clark and to brew and ship beer from 1800 W. Fulton.
The company sells its beers and handcrafted sodas in 15 states and Europe.
John Hall, the company's founder and chief executive, said the Clybourn location won national and international awards and produced 2,100 batches of beer in more than 200 styles.
Twenty years, ago, it also helped revitalize an industrial area plagued by vacant buildings.
"It's a very sad day for me," Hall said of the announced closing. "The Clybourn Brewpub has been like a second home to me for the past 20 years. I've made a lot of good friends over a pint of beer."

Spent two separate days over a Chicago beer weekend at Goose Island. We liked it so much the first day we went back for another. We drank as many of the Master in Beer Appreciation beers in an attempt to claim fleeting fame and had a good time doing it.
The reserve beers are great. They're available elsewhere in the city but well worth the try, particularly the Pere Jacques. All the beers were quality, though not all my particular style favorites. Try the Ed - it'll sit with you for a while.
Service was great and the buffalo burgers were tasty. They'll even do mini slider-like versions for as sampling - just make sure you get the homemade chips.
All in all, it's a definite place to go when hitting beer spots in Chicago.

Wasn't plnng to visit GI 'cause there are so many choices in Chicago however we're glad we did. We went to Clybourn vs. WVille locale as suggested at another bar and the food, beer and service were worth the trip. Tried the Pale Ales, ESB, and the Bourbon Stout. Yum to all. Bartender friendly as were some locals who actually enjoyed sharing info about 'insider' fav spots with us tourists. Bravo

Re below: They were serving it out of a cask. Hence, the name "cask barleywine." That might also explain why it came out looking kind of, you know, cask-conditioned.

I have some potentially disturbing news to report. There are rumors that Budwieser is looking to buy a stake in Goose Island. Goose Island seems interested in the deal because they will benefit from greater distribution. Bud struck a similar deal with Red Hook a while back by buying a 25% interest in the company. Lets hope this does not affect the quality of Goose.

Without hesitation, this is the BEST mirco I've been to to date. I had one of those experiences where I was ready to start looking for a place to live nearby. I sampled 6 beers while there (I had already had their bottled beers, so I skipped their flagships and went to the brewpub - only beers). They had an Alt as their cask conditioned that was outstanding. The smoked stout was another standout among several stars. Food? Best fish n' chips I've had in a long time. Service? We had the cold plate appetizer to start the meal, and had left-overs of everything (about 5 or 6 items). Not only did our server wrpa them up, she individually labeled every container. that was quite a suprise when we got back to the hotel.
Every micro should look no further when designing there place.

Stopped in.. incredible beer selection - I believe they were advertising a new beer every week. I wish I oculd have tried more. I tried the pilgrim pale which was only average in my opinion. The food menu looked impressive but I didn't try anything. Service was fine.

lGoose Island used to be a wonderful neighborhood brew pub but with the growth of the Lincoln Park neighborhood this establishment has begun to suffer -- most notably in the area of service. My most recent visit was by far one of the most excruciating experiences of my life. I was seated in the bar area and it was anything but crowded. I waited 20 minutes for a server to acknowledge our presence (even after verbal and physical gestures). Finally, she dumps us off on another server without saying a word, throws the menu down in front of us and walks away shaking her head in disbelief -- as if WE were the problem. I finally spoke with the manager and, although sympathetic, he offered no compensation of any sort (that is until we asked him for it once we received our check). This would not be a big issue if I hadn't already had a conversation with this manager two weeks prior about the same issues. I used to work in the service industry and recognize the problems here: poor management and an untrained staff.
They do have great beer and the brew master is a true gem. I will miss him and the wonderful craft brewed beer as I doubt I will ever frequent the restaurant again.

The super strong beers are good here mainly because it's fresh. All other beers are serviceable but lack craftmanship I've come to expect from the two superb breweries in the midwest that I don't have to even mention here. Alas, the veteran barkeep with the looks of a goddess is leaving to avoid stagnation I suppose. I could do the same but one world is enough for all of us.

Was in Chi-Town on biz and headed to the G.I. Was very pleased; their Pale won at the GABF for a reason - it's superb! Also had the single hopped ESB; a good choice. Extensive menu offerings; I went for a spinach salad that was the ideal beer accompaniment. Well located in a up and coming neighborhood; friendly and knowledgeable staff. I'll go back and you will, too.

I had long wanted to visit and finally got to do so over the St. Pat's day weekend with a friend from WI. We both quaffed the Honkers Ale - superb stuff. Hoppy, sharp, thirst-quenching, and intoxicating (no pun that!). To go with the beer I picked the gornanzola burger, a huge affair with excellent flavor. Overall the atmosphere was excellent. After dinner we retired to the bar for more beer (I think a stout) and cigars. I wanna go back. My only regret is that I live in South Texas and Chicago is more than a day's drive away :-(

Have you ever had one of those nights where you drink so much that you forgot what beers that you drank? Well, that is my story when it comes to writing a review for this place. I drank a pint or two too many to really remember what beer I drank. Point is, I drank too much because the beers were pretty damn good. I really didn't run into a beer that I didn't like. I took a sip of my friend's IPA and didn't care for that, but I'm not much of a hop-head to begin with. We ate dinner there and I had the fish and chips and my friend had a hamburger. Both were very good. The waiter had all the personality of a rock, which is something I'm not used to seeing in the Windy City. We headed to the bar for desert and more beer and found the bar staff to be better. Overall, two thumbs up.

This place seems better every time I try it. They are always trying to advance their beers. There are always beers at the brewery not available in bottles. My only gripe is that the Midway IPA was out last time I was there.

The bar has been raised – pun intended. Goose Island will be my new benchmark for which all other brew pubs will be rated. It is not by coincidence the Siebel Institute is located here – this is the center of the brewing universe.
I arrived in a very foul mood as I was unable to catch the little bastards that stole the lady’s wallet at the North/Clybourn station (ain’t young anymore as I told the cop). Anyway, the beer had better been good or I was simply going to pour it over my head to cool off.
I first had the cask-conditioned ale of the day which was a delightful “English Midland’s Style Mild.” It had a wonderfully clean nose with a perfect balance that warmed up nice in the very- long aftertaste. Next. Ah – finally an unfiltered wheat – the “312” (their address). This one had a fantastic nose and palate with subtle esters coming and going behind some very fresh Cascade hops. The Summertime Kolsch was the second best of this style I’ve ever had, which was very long on flavor. The IPA was a hop heads delight, especially in the nose, but not overly so on the palate. And the Goose Pils had the most flavor of an pilsner I’ve had. This is not colored water like a lot of (American) Pilsner’s are.
The woman selling the crap in the back could have been a little friendlier (had to buy a shirt), but the bar lady out front (Pam?) was right on top of things and was a pleasure to chat with. Seeing my delight in their other libations, she brought out a bottle of a Belgian-style “Pere Jacques” named after the Abbot at a Trappist brewery. This was part of the “Goose Island Reserve Series” and was heaven in a glass, believe me. The nose was slightly warmer than Ommegang and the alcohol came through nicely. It was brewed with “loads of malt” as the bottle says, but the other flavors came and went as well and was nicely balanced.
The nicest afternoon I’ve ever spent in a brew pub didn’t even come to $30, which also included a humongous appetizer platter for two, that could easily have fed four. I started the MBA (Master of Beer Appreciation) Passport and will be back soon to work on it. And when a place is this good, I have one recommendation – don’t change a thing (please).

Tried their Oktoberfest this weekend. Ugh -- easily the worst I've had. If they had told me it was a nut-brown I would have believed them. Had a Pils too which basically tasted like I was drinking nothing but liquid hops. It's getting to the point where I don't trust anything but the Honker's any more. I never understood why people raved about this place to begin with, and it only seems to have gotten worse.

Great beer, and something for everyone. Worth a visit, if in Chicago. I've been drinking Goose Island in bottles for a few years, and always wanted to visit the pub. Food was very good, usual brewpub fare. I will go back next time I'm in town.
While you're in the area, go across the street to Sam's Wine and Spirits. It's an awesome liquor "superstore", with a fantastic selection, including all the Goose Island brews. Plan to spend a couple hours there.
