If I were stuck in a place where I had to drink other peoples selection of refreshment, I would choose a Zima over The Red Granite Extra Special Ale! This is one of the worst beers I have choked down.

I first bought this beer a year ago, in Austin. Went immediately back to the stroe for an exchange, thought I got a bad sample. Tried both the bock and red and found both to be unpleasant. Body was thin and watery, some bitterness but not from any hop essence that I could tell. I heard a rumor recently that this effort had gone out of business. Was sad, not to miss this lame beer, but to not have had a few bottles to stash in my growing collection of defunct Texas brews. Now it is still on the shelves, giving Texas beer a bad name. It's not Balcones Fault, it's Balcones Flawed.

These guys aren't doing something right. I've had both their Bat's Breath Bock and Red Granite Extra Special Brew. Both of these beers had a nasty acidic taste like they had turned to vinegar. There also seems to be some quality control issues. The labels on the bottles are crooked or missing, both times the bottles were covered with an oily residue, and there was lint type material stuck between the bottle cap and the bottle.

My favorite is Red Granite. I like the grass roots effort behind the beer as well. Something that Austin was built on, and now you don't see much anymore.

YUCK! Easily the worst microbrew I've ever had. I bought a six-pack of the Pale Male a little over a year ago and it actually tasted medicinal. I bumped into the brewmaster about a week later at HEB where his beers were being featured and told him about my experience. He said it was probably just a bad batch. I've heard they have consistency problems...for their sake, I hope they iron them out. There are a lot of beers in Austin that are far superior to their products.

The Red Granite brew is a great beer. They have a Pale Male and other seasonal styles. Your finer grocery store will have this beer. You can find seasonals on tap at the Ginger Man, LoveJoy's and other places. This brew has found its niche.
