Visited 6/19. Only five beers on tap but the three I tried were great; Golden Spike ,Copperhead Lager and the Irish Stout. Liked the stout the best. Shrimp and scallop I had was great. Dark, cool atmosphere good relief from a hot, sunny day. Short stroll to the transit center and river walk area.

Very nice building in downtown. I had the Brown Ale. It was robust and it had a good finish. Park at the nearby mall-it costs $1 for the first 3 hours and you need no validation from a mall retailer.

come early or have a reservation on WATERFIRE nights...by 5:30 they hadda 30-45 min wait.
Bacon cheese bbq burger was an A+. Fish and chips--fine, how can ya go wrong?
Beer: only one, their Rusty Grizwald. Dark copper, hoppy nose, good body, nicely balanced malt/hops, nice long finish.
Waitstaff were charming.
We'll come back for sure if in the area.

It's been a year since my last visit to PVD. To my astonishment, that same sleepy bartender still works here. This guys is so unsocial, so disinterested in the beer and customers I just walked out. At least a good place like Trinity is up the street. Seriously this guy gets my vote as worst bartender in America. Hello management get a clue. And make some beer that is not as lifeless as the staff while yer at it.

Stopped in for an early dinner on the 4th of July. This is a rather nice place, with ample seating and a patio area for additional seating. Had a heck of a time finding it on the city map, but it was worth the search. The service was very good. I got the sampler for starters and found the beers to be quite good but not great. I think this is to be expected from a John Harvard's or most other chains. Trinity was closed so it was the only game in town. I stuck with a couple of pints of the wheat and found it to be quite drinkable. Food was good as was overall experience. Stop by if in Providence.

Only had time for one pint and one appetizer, so this is a limited opinion.
The Pale Ale was refreshing, but fairly mild in flavor and aroma. The body was also light for a Pale, but that makes it nice for those hot summer days.
I had the calamari appetizer. It was rings only, which is a detractor for me. They were a bit chewy, which makes me think they were frozen, not fresh.
The atmosphere was much more upscale than Trinity brewery down the road.
Cheers, Mark

Better than some of the early reviews, but still not up to other John Harvard's I've been to. Tasty beer and good food. The cask-conditioned stout was really a porter (a very good porter); unfortunately our server didn't know the difference (and didn't know much else about beer either).

Updating my last review. The Rusty Griswold IPA was fairly good. But last visit on a weeknite the place was packed. This time is was dead. Coincidence there are no longer chips to munch on at the bar? Bartender looked and acted like he wanted to be somewhere else. No interest in the customers.

Stopped in for dinner and a beer after the Sox opener. They didn't have a huge selection of beer, but I give them credit for diversity - among the 5 they offered was a Belgian-style ale and on the hand-pump they had a milk stout. Decided on the stout. It was true to style, malty, somewhat but not overly sweet. My brother had the Golden Spike (American-style) Ale - nicely balanced, moderately hopped. Foodwise, we were looking for something simple - they accomodated us and let us order from the lunch menu. Definitely worth a visit when in the area.

This was my first visit, so I had nothing to compare to, but I think the place is great! We sat at the bar (early evening) and had plenty of attention! The menu looks very good, and the 3 things we had were well prepared.
I thought the beers were diverse and pretty good overall. I expect they'll get even better as the new brewer gets up to speed. The IPA was a little light, but strong in acrid hops. The Harvest Spice was a pleasant "pumpkin ale" type, but could have been maltier. Northern Light won't disappoint the Budwater lovers: it was dry and tasteless, but not unpleasant. Golden Spike, a PA, was nicely malty, but a tad too hoppy. The Vanilla Bean Porter needs some work; it was a little sour and tasted like medicine.
Overall, I would definitely go back, if I'm ever in the area again.

Union Station has a new brewer on staff. Tried one of his first offerings last night - The Ripple IPA. Solid beer that is miles ahead of any other Union beer I've had, in terms of flavor. Hope things keep improving over there.
Cheers!

A little slow to get service despite a prime seat at the bar, but once attended to service was fine. Good food selection, better than most brew pubs. Old building with old stone adds nicely to atmosphere (as opposed to newly built and too contrived brewpubs. Always like a place where staff is happy to let you sample different brews.

Beer - English style. Small selection, about 5 beers. Not very good. C. Didn't strike us as a serious beer place. Bar - nice bar and restaurant in the basement of the old Union Station right down town. Service - not particularly friendly.

six or seven beer options, none out of the ordinary. Same with the quality of the beer. If you are thirsty and passing thru Providence, it is only a minute or two from 95. Not worth too much of a detour, though.

I must echo John T. Sherman's review from last June; this place is mediocre in every way. I didn't have any food, perhaps I'll do that if by any (bad) chance I return. Thank God they had a stout, which was ok to good; the other beers were all completely forgettable and not worth any more words from me. Only five choices, sad. Atmosphere industrial and "hip" whatever that is.

A recent visit back to RI about a month ago, brought me to US for the first time in almost two years. The visit was dismal. The beer selection was pitiful, with only four beers pouring. RI Light, Gold Spike, Friars Brown, Barleywine, and cask Gold Spike. None of these beers were at all remarkable, all average tasting examples of their styles, and very over priced. The barleywine was the best of the lot, but even that beer was just mediocre. The food and atmosphere has always been great at Union Station, but the beer for the last 6 years or so, has been very average. Go for the food, not the beer. If you are going just to try thier beers, I think you will be very dissapointed. When I can say Hops most the most enjoyable brewpub visit when I was in Providence, it says to me, good beer in RI is quite scarce. Union Station is without question the weakest link in the John Harvard's chain.

My fiance and I had dinner here after the NE Brewfest at the RI Convention Center and i'd have to say this place was at least consistant with the John Harvard's chain -- which isn't a bad thing! I enjoyed the Golden Spike and the IPA that I had. The food was great and the service was Terrific. Shamus and Nelson(?) were very attentive and excellent servers. I'd recommend this place for dinner and Trinity for beer and atmosphere. DON'T go to Hops!

This definately isn't as good as the first John Havards. In evaluating the beers, i'll start off with the good. The hefe was pretty good, not as good as an average german hefe, but very drinkable. The IPA was hopped well, but not overly. And the Berry Wheat which achieved a gueze lambic-like quality (but it is just a wheat beer with alot of different fruits added).
And for the bad. Their Pale Ale (golden spike) had some off flavors that could still be tasted while on cask(not very good). And lastly, the Stout tasted/smelled a little like tobacco. I'm not sure how that could happen accidentily. But once i recognized the taste, i couldn't finish the pint easily.
Still a decent place to go in Providence, but if can go to one, do the Trinity Brewhouse.

I have attended several Brewers dinners on tuesday nights. They have all been superb, and I am a very hard person to satisfy as far as service and quality of food and drink! Could you please ensure that I am on the mailing list for the brewers Dinners as well as general mailing list? I am looking forward to the next dinner with great anticipation as is my partner. She is a micro-brew neophyte, so the experience will be a eye opener!
