The brewery portion of the old restaurant is now its own separate business, Good People Brewery. 5 Points Grill had a total of 12 beers on tap, including three Good People brews. I had the Good People IPA, a very hoppy and strangely unfiltered beer. It wasn't even translucent. It's like they didn't filter it at all, such there seemed to be chunks of hops floating around in it. Tasty beer, but I don't much care of the unfiltered stuff. They had some of the Atlanta-based Sweetwater brews on tap, but there had been some controversy recently about the SweetWwater IPA, which was too high in alcohol content, and the Alabama state alcohol control board (or whatever they call it there) removed it from all bars and restaurants in the state. A pity, as I'd been looking forward to trying it.
The atmosphere in nice at 5 Points Grill. Nice bar, with big TVs. Nice indoor and outdoor restaurant. Very eclectic neighborhood.
While I was there, I got to talking to a guy named Brandt, who owned the local franchise of Mellow Mushroom, and he said his place would be opening up soon in the same neighborhood, and would have all microbrews on the beer menu. If I get back to Birmingham, I'll definitely check that out.

So glad these guys have Sweetwater's beers (Atlanta) on tap. I'm a Seattle hop-head and expected to have to wait til I get back home to have a decent IPA, but theirs is really good. They are pouring "Summer Hummer" now, a wheat that's definitely worth a try. Skip the 420 Pale Ale, as it is devoid of any character. The blackened grouper dinner was excellent ($18).

Good food, but pricey. The service at lunch is always lousey - either the kitchen is slow or the wait staff disappears. Management is apparently absent. Salads are quite good, as are pasta dishes.

I visited this place years ago when it was the Mill Bakery & Brewery. The brewing equipment is still visible from the dining room, but Gary behind the bar has said there has been no brewing activity for quite some time. The good news is that they feature five draft choices from Sweetwater Brewing Company: 420 Pale Ale, IPA, Exodus Porter, Sweet Georgia Brown, and Blue. There were a few other good taps as well: Yuengling and one of the Flying Dog ales, plus Hoegaarden, Newcastle, and Weihenstephaner. We did not eat here, but we saw a large and varied menu, and a lot of folks dining on a late Friday afternoon. 5 Points Grill was voted “Best Outdoor Patio” by readers of Birmingham Weekly.

I ate--and drank--at The Mill in December 2003 on a trip to B'ham, and almost wept when I heard it had closed in March 2004. I rejoiced when I heard it had reopened, and tried the Five Points in May. As one reviewer stated, their micros on tap are from the Sweetwater Brewing Co.in Atlanta, and I found them quite good, except that the other reviewer neglected to mention the Georgia Brown Ale, which I liked so much I had three. Perhaps it was a seasonal; I don't recall. Their strong point under both names was their pizza, and I exaggerate not when I say that it was the best I've ever had at a brewpub and among the best I've ever had anywhere. I ate outside and had no problem with pigeons, perhaps because it was night. Bikers made it pretty noisy, though. The ambience inside is homey, and they have a couple of pool tables and a fireplace. A friend in B'ham reports they may go brewpub soon. Go for it!

The Mill claims to brew their own beer, but in reality it is contract brewed. They 3 or 4 beers that they have brewed for the resturant, but skip these since these lack any real character and tend to be made for the mass-market beer crowd. The reason to go and drink is the fact that they also have 4 beers on tap from the Atlanta, GA micro Sweetwater Brewing. These beers are excellent. They have a Pale Ale, an IPA, a porter, and a fruit beer (blueberry I think). I have tried all of the Sweetwater beers with the exception of the blueberry ale and found them to have nice malt character and a distinct hoppiness that should satisfy all but the most manic hophead.

Excellent variety of beer. The food here is really great also, but if you plan to dine be sure to eat inside. The pigeons outside can really mess up a meal.

Beer is rather weak in flavor. Almost watered-down tasting. Food is very tasty with a large variety. Fun, lively place.
