All my ratings are out of date. I dined and tasted there in October 2004. At that time, the beers were good, the service was fine, and the Sox were hot.
I hope that the incident with the waiter JB was isolated. The hospitality industry is not about being inhospitable.
The last respondent wasn't really talking about brewpubs, at all.

To the writer who thinks two females making out in a brewpub, maybe he/she should have enjoyed the only HEAD available, the HEAD on the beer. If you want to flaunt your sexual preferences, then go somewhere besides a Micro-Brewery. GOOD for the employee. Been to this location, GREAT BEER, leave the politics and sexual deviants on the curb.

I went on Sunday night, and we were refused service when two women in my party kissed each other. When we complained, the manager "JB" would not give us his full name, and would not give us our server's name.
If you're a fan of equal rights - don't go to this place.

I used to love this place when it first opened many years ago. Great beers, great food and atmosphere. Times have changed.
This place is right next to Fenway park and gets a big crowd before/after the RedSox game. In order to reach the masses, they have toned down the flavor and styles of thier beer selection. I had their IPA this weekend and I almost couldnt finish it. It had no hop taste, lacked aroma and a thin body. All that was present was an astringent bitterness. This was not a good example of an IPA. This is not the same beer that won in the GABF in 1997. The Octoberfest was OK, although thin an unreamarkable. The Boston Common (steam beer) lacked the proper bitterness, body and malt and toasty backround.
Cant say I would make an effort to go here for beer in the future.

Location, location, location. Across the street from Fenway that charges $6 for Coors Light or Budweiser. Anyway, they had a large number of beer offerings. I tried a sampler of two varieties of pale ale and stout (special: vanilla bean and oatmeal). All four samplies were fine but didn't have much past the initial flavor. I did have a Fenway American Pale Ale and this seemed to have the follow through taste. Our food was very good. We arrived just in time to get a table before game time.

Went to Boston to see the Red Sox - this establishment is just across the street from Fenway Park. Food was ok - typical pub fare. Servers were not knowledgeable about the brews - but the bartenders were. I will visit again when in Boston.

I visited last summer and was able to sample several beers. I love hops, and the IPA was no disappointment. I've never really been one for fruity beers, but the Watermelon and Bluebeery were excellent!! I did learn the hard way that the Watermelon beer is better at the pub than from a growler at home. I loved this place so much I dragged friends to the other location when I was back in town for work in January!

Stopped by for dinner before seeing the Dropkick Murphys down the street at the Avalon. I've been here a few times and although never disappointed, never really thrilled. The beers are fine, but nothing spectacular. Food was decent. I guess if you are in the neighborhood, its worth a shot.

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. We assumed it was for the tourists and baseball crowd. How wrong could we be, a fine selection of beer including a couple served cask conditioned which is a refreshing change for the USA. Cask conditioned beer tastes so different I'm amazed you so-called beer experts don't demand more of it. The guy fro Bocca Rattan needs educating about beer (as well as investing in a spell-checker - we English hate to see our language so abused). Our server was extremely friendly, charming, knowledgable and added to a splendid afternoon.

We had some time to kill before going over to Chapel Hill for a game. We went to have a look at Fenway and I saw the place. I had not read any reviews of the place. For one, they had a very extensive beer menu. I think I counted 15 different beers, plus 2 more on hand pumps. I tried the IPA on hand pump, while my wife had the same but on the standard tap. Both were fantastic. They had a pumpkin beer on the other hand pump...I am a sucker for the hand pump, so I gave it a try. It was so good that I didn't try any other of their beers...I kept drinking it for a couple of hours. My wife had a hefeweizen and a blueberry beer that were both great. I wanted to try everything. We even tried to go for lunch the next day, but there was some concert at Fenway, so we couldn't park anywhere. I guess it will have to wait until the next time I am in Boston.

They always have a good selection of at least 10 beers. Although I don't like all of them, none of them are bad. The pub is huge and very nice, worth a visit.

When it opened, the beer was great and the food was horrible. A couple of years ago, they righted the food ship. BBW has neither the best beer, nor the best food (and the staff can sometimes be downright surly!). They do have two great locations, consistently delicious beer (peanut butter porter is an excellent winter offering) and consistently good casual food. BBW Fenway also produces beer for BB Wolf's a few doors down. Wolf's suffers from the old BBW affliction - good beer, terrible food & lousy service. Don't bother - stay at BBW and enjoy the consistency.

I have spent my last four falls in Boston, and it wouldn't be a complete trip without a stop at Boston Beer Works. I have been to several breweries throughout Boston and across the country, and by far have been the most pleased with Boston Beer Works! What a great location, across from Fenway, great before or after game hang out. And if you couldn't get tix to the game a great hang out during game time.

There are better brew pubs in Greater Boston. I think John Harvards in Harvard Sq. has the best bee and food in the metro area for the $. But Beer works is pretty good. They have a very broad selection. Their staple beers are adequate, but what makes them worth visiting are their specialties. The blueberry ale is worth the trip because they serve it with wild bluberries in the beer. CO2 bubbles collect on the berries and make them float to the surface, where they release their bubbles and sink. So a pint of diving blueberries is amusing. The Hecules strong ale- their barley wine - is amazing. If they have it, try it. The pumpkin head ale in autumn is also well worth a try. I was skeptical of that at first too, but it's good.
The food is fine, but try the sweet potato fries. Yummy.

I am disappointed to see reviews calling the beer anything better than Good. I realize that everyone's got their own opinion and tastes, and that's well and good, but the beer here is of such low quality that it's unfathomable that anyone would rate it the highest rating possible.
There's an enormous selection of homebrew. I put N/A for selection because, while there are over a dozen beers, literally none of them are true to style or worth drinking. I've been here twice with the same results. It's clear that this establishment just takes advantage of thirsty Fenway-goers who are used to the Coorsweiser "American Pilsners" (sic), or tourists.
They have decent food, but nothing worth writing home (or on pubcrawler!) about. The service can be slow; even when the bar is slow it took time to greet us, and to serve our order.. strange.
In any event, it's not recommended. While they're chains, John Harvards in Cambridge and Rock Bottom by Tremont are both much better choices with much better beers.

Visited there just before Labor Day 2003 and had a fine time. The Boston Beer Works would do beer drinkers a major public service if they made "Old Ironsides" a regular offering instead of a seasonal brew: in my opinion, it compares eminently well with MacEwan's Export.

We received several recommendations to visit Beer Works across from Fenway when visiting Boston. Beers were awesome but watch out for the Tom the bartender with the Scottish accent. When we ordered two cask conditioned ales, Tom said they were all out and didn't have any more. Went to the other bar up the stairs and got the cask-conditioned ales without a problem. We weren't being obnoxious or rude and were very excited to be visiting Beer Works. Tom admitted he was understaffed and didn't have time to go get the cask ales for us. Wow, that's a way to treat the customer. Too bad Tom was having a bad day. Hope he doesn't ruin it for others visiting from out-of-town.

I rated this brewpub overall as "awsome" not only because of the catagories listed about, but because of the location. Directly accross the street from Fenway. They have about 18 beers on tap. Their most popular is the Blueberry Beer, which I tried, but I am not a big fan of fruit beers. The bartender (she was great!) also had me try a "Black and Blue", which was a mix of their Stout and Blueberry beers - a little different from a "Black and Tan"! The other beers I tried were excellent!! The good was also very good. They had the best fries I have ever had (seasoned chive fries).

This is the best brew pub in the WHOLE WORLD! The Blueberry Ale is yummy (It's hard for me to stop at just one). I like the fact that their beers are smooth and not overcarbonated. The Pumpkinhead Ale is excellent. None of their beers are overpowering - just refreshing. Service is excellent and the food is wonderful. Even when the Sox are playing, the staff is always attentive and efficient. Definitely a place to come back again and again.
