Wimberg, published by the Ohio Book Store in Cincinnati (second edition in 1997). I am looking for the history of the Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing company as far back as it goes family legend teels a tale of my great grandfather starting the brewery only to sell it maybe before the name Hudepohl was used any info would be great.

I've been searching just to find out where i can buy Burger beer.Our local groc store had a supply for sev days and then gone-same with a super grocery store-there 1 wk, gone the next! I'm glad at least you now pointed me to City Brewery in LaCrosse Wi where hopefully I can get some answers!Thanks for the info.

I have enjoyed Hudepohl products since 1981 or so. Hudy gold Lager beer in a bottle was the most enjoyable beer i've ever had, Christian morlein on draught is "quite simply" the best beer, and Hudy Delight is good both bottle and draught. I hope to be able to continue enjoying this fine line of beers for a long time to come with the recent brewery changes.

I'd like to clear up a few misconceptions about Hudepohl-Schoenling. Since I work there, I know the true story. This great old-line regional beer company has evolved a lot over the past few years. Like a lot of regional brewers being squeezed out by Bud and Miller, they've done what they had to just to survive. First, Hudepohl-Schoenling is not and never has been owned by Boston Beer Company or Jim Koch. H-S sold a Cincinnati brewery to Boston Beer in December 1996 because Anheuser-Busch was doing ads that poked fun at Jim Koch for not owning his own brewery. He needed one and a purchase took care of a lot of H-S overhead and probably prevented a bankruptsy. However, Boston Beer Co. never purchased the H-S company or its labels and formulas. H-S did continue to brew beer at the brewery under contract until that deal ended in May 2001. Although Hudepohl-Schoenling still has sales, marketing and shipping offices in Cincinnati, the company was forced to move production of its beers elsewhere because Boston Beer no longer had enough excess capacity to produce H-S beers in Cincinnati. Little Kings and all four of the Christian Moerlein brands are now brewed and bottled at Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland. Hudepohl and Frederick are both owned by Snyder International Brewing Group. Hudy Delight and the recently re-packaged and re-formulated Burger Classic and Burger Light beers are now brewed and packaged under contract at the City Brewery in LaCrosse, Wisconsin (former home of Heileman Brewing Co.) It's also worth noting that H-S and its owners never owned the Devil Mountain brand of beer. H-S brewed Devil Mountain beers under contract for a few years in the mid-1990s for Seagrams Company, which actually owns the Devil Mountain brand and has since discontinued its production. Here's the product lineup for H-S as of September 2001: Christian Moerlein Select Lager (1998 World Champion Munich Helles) Christian Moerlein Honey Almond (1997 gold medal winner - WBC) Christian Moerlein Bock Beer Christian Moerlein Kolsch Ale Little Kings Cream Ale -this great little beer was recently re-formulated back to the original Little Kings formula, which was so popular and won three consecutive gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival. It's really good now if you haven't tried it for a while. Hudy Delight - Premium light beer with more flavor and body than any national brand of light beer. This one actually tastes great. Burger Classic - A full-calorie, fully krausened Bohemian beer. Burger Light - good clean light lager. As mentioned, Snyder Brewing Group also owns Frederick Brewing Co. (Wild Goose and Blue Ridge beers) and Crooked River Brewing Co. of Cleveland. Crooked River brews some great English-style ales and German lagers. Snyder International Brewing Group (SIBG) acquired the brands of Hudepohl-Schoenling, apparently in 1999. I don't know if they've brewed them at Cleveland's Crooked River Brewing Co., which they apparently rescued from bankruptcy in 1998. SIBG bought Maryland's Frederick Brewing Co. in 1999, and they are working on adding Little Kings and Crooked River beers to those already brewed in Frederick.

For your edification, The Schoenling Brewery is now called The Sam Adams Boston Brewery. Schoenling was about to go bankrupt and shut down a year or two ago, when Jim Koch (who is originally from Cinci) and Boston Beer stepped in and bought the Brewery. All the Sam Adams beer marketed for the midwest is now made at the old Schoenling Brewery, along with Hudepohl, Little Kings, and Christian Morlein. Those are now Boston Beer products. This is noteworthy because the Schoenling brewery is one of the oldest in the country. They made beer there long before anyone heard of St. Louis and Budweiser (Yech!). And Hudepohl is a very old brand name. Now after Jim Koch purchased the brewery, the old Schoenling owners stayed in Cinci and opened another facility. They are strictly a Microbrewery now and make a line of beers called Devil's Mountain, which are pretty good.

This brewery doesn't have a large selection of beers, but all of their products are good to outstanding. Christian Moerlein has been my new found favorite for well over a year now. You haven't had the best till you have tried this one. Christian is something I savor and usually only have maybe two at a time in bottles but usually have four or five on tap. Still needed a beer to party with and go beyond the good buzz. Well I stuck with another H-S product with Little Kings. An ale with a light beer drinkability that will keep you going back for more and more often since your only drinking 7oz. at a time.
