Beer Quality Beer Selection Food Service Overall
Awesome! Awesome! So So Good So So
The beer is wonderful. The food seems uninspired, menu description was fantastic but the food was pretty bland. I would recommend the bar and garlic fries for Happy Hour but I would not recommend having dinner.

Great Awesome! Great Great Great
While in Baltimore to indulge myself in Max's Belgian beer festival, I thought: "Why not visit Brewer's Art?" And why not, since it is a superb example of what happens when great beer is combined with excellent cuisine.

Located in the Mount Vernon section of town just a short walk from the Cultural Centre light rail station, and a few blocks south of Penn Station, Brewer's Art is situated in a 107-year old townhome that has retained much of its original décor. Once entering the marble foyer, you then step into the front lounge area, an airy room with windows looking out onto North Charles Street. In this room, which may have been the living room, is the small bar seating about a dozen thirsty souls. Check out the marble fireplace behind the bar. Along the window are a few high-tops. Additionally, there are some plush chairs and sofa available if you need real comfort. (There are those times when it can be dangerous to be too comfortable.)

Passing the archway on the left takes you into additional dining rooms where there can be found an architectural orgy of marble, mahogany and plasterwork. The stairs on the left lead down to another bar, one that reminded me of a brick cavern that one might find in Prague. It is a darker, hipper cousin to the upstairs lounge.

Of course, while Brewer's Art makes their own Belgian style beers, such as a signature brown abbey called Resurrection, they also offered their Beacon Pale Ale, a lightly-hopped session beer and Proletary, a nicely malted porter. There is an impressive bottle list (100+) that leans toward Belgium and Germany - in fact, they had an Alt Sticke to die for. During Happy Hour, most of the house beers are only $3.00.

Add to this a unique food menu and attentive service (even when jam-packed), you could really melt into one of those aforementioned plush chairs and die a happy beer drinker.

Two items of critique: they need to put in additional restrooms and expand the hours - at least on weekends, when they open at 4pm Saturday and 5pm Sunday. Still ... a must stop!

I am a regular diner at high end establishments and this was the first time I have had to speak to the management about the horrible service. We went on a slow Sunday, the restaurant was 1/2 full but we still waited 10 minutes to have someone take our order. Appetizers were fine but we sat for 45 more minutes with empty drinks, begging repeatedly for bread, only to be served cold food - still no drinks. Manager at least comped part of the meal but it was ruined nonetheless. I will never return and wouldn't recommend.

The beer and food were fantastic. The beers were great. I was in Belgium last August, tasting these beers it felt like I was back. The big difference, everyone in Belgium was friendly. They were proud of the beer brewed their and were helpful, even though I speak no german, dutch or french, we were able to communicate. Everyone at the Brewer's Art spoke english, but it does not matter, was would they speak to someone who is inferior to themselves. They are doing you a favor by serving you. What a shame, otherwise on my top five list.

A MUST STOP IN THIS GREAT BEER TOWN. I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A BREWPUB THAT EXCLUSIVELY BREWS BELGIAN BEERS. SOUR CHERRY ALE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO EXPERIENCE! VERY UPSCALE INTERIOR ON FIRST FLOOR BUT BASEMENT HAS A CASUAL FEEL.

This was my favorite brewpub of an 18 brewpub tour of the East Coast (and one of my favorite nationwide). It is located in an old townhouse. There’s a small bar up front with windows overlooking the street, another small bar and wine cellar downstairs, and a restaurant in back. We sat at the bar and just had a couple of beers. The other customers at the bar were all friendly and seemed very knowledgable about the local beer scene, and knew this was the place to be. They specialize in Belgian style ales, and in addition to their house brews, they also have a great selection of bottled Belgian beers. I started with a beer called Resurrection, which was a fantastic brown Abbey style ale. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer and would have loved to spend the afternoon drinking a few more. My wife had the Ozzy; a great, light, golden Belgian Ale similar to a Duvel. I next had the St Festivus; a really good brown winter Belgian ale spiced with orange peel and ginger. My wife's second beer was the House Pale Ale, an excellent mild, English style pale ale. All in all, a fantastic drinking experience.

Quite possibly the most upscale brewpub I have ever been to. On our way home from a DC trip, we stopped there. I had a t shirt and baseball hat on...figured we would get dinner...only to find everyone in the room had on sportcoats, ties, etc. So, we hung out at the front bar. Small and somewhat cramped, but the beers were excellent. The Tiny Tim was interesting, with hints of rosemary. We enjoyed the cherry beer the best. Each drink is served in the proper style glass. The bar menu is not vast, but has pizza, burgers and a delicious turkey sandwich made with a bleu cheese spread and real cranberries. It was a good stop, but if you are a going there from out of town, just know this is no TGIF-ish brewpub atmosphere. There were 6 beers on taps and each one tasted fresh and good.

Hands down, one of the top two pubs in the world. Tasty, fresh Belgian-style beer on tap and an awesome selection of bottles. The food is pretty darn good, but I stick to the pizza in the front bar. Service is fast and friendly, even in the catacombs.

True Beervana in Charm City! I live in Washington, DC, yet still make it a point to visit this gift to the beer geek. The fact that Brewer's Art is still here, deadens the loss of DeGroen's (Baltimore Brewing Company). Of course, one must go to the downstairs cellar (somewhat reminicent of a Prague beerhall) to get an adequate atmosphere. They serve their own house beer (IPA, Proletary Porter and Resurrection, the last being a very malty Belgian) as well as an excellent bottle choice: Ayinger Dunkels, Victory Weizbocken and Frankenheim Alt, which I've never even seen in the US until here. A must for the true beer afficionado.

It was nice to find a brewpub that specializes in their beers. This place brews mostly Belgium style beers (all very good) and serves them in the proper style glasses. They also have a very wide selection of Belgium and other European and Micro bottled beers. I was impressed to see they serve many of their imported beers in proper glasses as well. I had a Rauchbier Urbock (smoked bock) with the cheese plate. It went so damn well together! Best out of 5 Baltimore brewpubs I visited while in town.

While I have been to a great number of brewpubs thoughout the nation, I have seldom been to an establishment that takes what it means to be a brewpub/beer bar to such a lofty, new level. First of all, you will be extremely challanged to find another enterprise that brews exclusively Belgian-style ales. And not only brews them, but expands on the concept and makes them their own. Every one of the ales available on draft captures the essence and subtlety of Belgian brewing. From the Resurrection Dubbel to the Cerberus Tripel, these are beers that will not disappoint even the most critical of palates. Secondly, they have a first-rate bottle list that even contains a reserve list. A reserve list, for crying out loud! I did not have an oppurtunity to sample the victuals offered by the Brewer's Art, but if the degree of care exhibited in thier beer making is translated to the kitchen it should be nothing short of magical. Wrap this all up in an architecturally magnificant space (complete with casual front bar, two art-filled dining areas and a cavern-like downstairs lounge) and you have one of the nation's top brewpubs. No question about it. I only wish I lived a little closer.

Same ol' same ol'. Excellent beers (only 5 or 6 house beers on at any given moment, though) coupled with a LONG menu of bottled Belgians and Belgian-style beers, terrific selection of whiskies/bourbons/etc., and a stupendous (albeit not cheap) kitchen and menu. Happy hour 4-6 house beers $2 (save for expensive stuff like their Cerebus Tripel, 10%).

A truly amazing brewpub although be warned--if you can't handle cigarette smoke, the dungeon is probably not the best place for you. The ventilation is not the greatest and the smokers seem to outnumber the nonsmokers. Having said that, Resurrection is my favorite beer in the world, hands-down. My husband took me for my birthday recently and I had the REsurrection, Proletery, and the house ale. I loved the Proletary too--very smooth and drinkable. I highly recommend this place. I'm usually too full after all the beer to eat, so the only thing I've ever had there is the garlic fries with mayo.

One of my favorite B'more bars, the Brewer's Art has amazing beer and an inventive, sophisticated, and pleasing menu. The upstairs is split between a dining room and a bright bar, and the basement level has a second bar and many dark nooks for intimate convos. The rosemary-garlic fries with fresh mayonnaise are not to be missed!

Simply put, the best brewpub in Maryland. The bartender, Dave, has always been friendly & has given excellent service. Resurrection Ale can now be found on the Eastern Shore of Maryland at Out Of The Fire, in Easton. Now I don't have to drive 90 miles to drink the best beer around.

Like no other brewpub experience I have ever had, and that numbers well over 200! Our meals were exceptional and service was solid on a Monday evening. My nephew and I each had a 20 oz pint of the Proletary Ale, followed by their highly regarded Resurrection ale served in a stemmed 14 oz glass. Much has been said about Resurrection in previous reviews, but little has been offered about Proletary, a Belgian-style black ale that was very smooth and drinkable – an excellent beer. From what I read in the most recent Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, the Brewer’s Art ales have been showing up in pubs throughout Baltimore and now entering into Philadelphia and Washington DC as well.

This is my second entry for this fine restaurant. We went up to Baltimore last weekend just to experience Brewers Art again. The beers, the food and the service all come together to make for a marvelous dining experience. The Cerberus Tripel was as fine an example of the style as we had in Antwerp or Brugge. If the waterzooi, a traditional Belgian cream stew laden with seafood, is on the menu, please give it a try! Their version is superb. The gallette with rhubarb was a pleasant dessert with a glass of Resurrection.

It may be a two and a half hour drive to get there for us, but I can't wait for a return visit.

Went to The Brewer's Art twice while spending the extended weekend in Baltimore for the lacrosse final four. This is the best brewpub in town in my opinion. The beers they make lean massively in the Belgian sector and the brewer does a fine job. I had the house pale, the Ressurection dobbel, the Cerberus trippel, sour cherry, and an ale which I would loosely classify as a standard porter. The House Pale I thought was rather bland, with watered-malt and a lack of hop character (the bartender compared it to Orval and she was way off the mark). But following it with the Ressurection was a treat. This IS their flagship beer. A burgundy color, this beer has great background notes of raisons, dates, and a bit of caramel. The earthy spice imparted by the hops provides a great balance to the malt and the warming 7% alcohol content. This beer is comparable to Vondel. The trippel was great as well. Higher on the trippel side at 10%, this is one of those "Watch out, you're drinking a potent beer, but you won't know it until you stand up!" beers. Great taste of belgian candy sugar, straw, and fruit at the opening and definite alcohol in the finish. Good hop spice. The porter and sour cherry were good as well, but I had only samples and I had them after enjoying the aforementioned brews, so my palate may be skewed, so I will refrain from a review--but they were good.

The 'Zart is still the gold standard by which brew pubs and alehouses should be measured. Never once have I had a bad glass of beer, a less-than-fresh one, or a disappointing afternoon and evening (either upstairs in Heaven, or downstairs in Hell). May Volker and his crew carry on, carry on, carry on.

The Brewers Art is in a trendy neighborhood. On entering, you'll be surprised by how small the bar is, with room for only about 8 stools. The rest of the room has couches and chairs. They serve about 5 of their own Belgian style draft beers, and have a large selection of bottled Belgians. The dining menu is quite eclectic with many interesting and unfamiliar choices. The downstairs bar is also quite interesting; dark, fairly small, with several cubbies which make it seem intimate.
