Last time I was at the ODB was in 2005 and the tour was excellent. Anyhow if you are in NOVA and want to fill your growler. Shenandoah Brewing Company in Alexandria may be worth a visit (http://www.shenandoahbrewing.com/)not too fancy just good beer and chance to make your own on site. I recommend calling to see what they have available before you drive over. Also sweetwater tavern in centreville as good eats and beer. Vintage 50 is a little bit of a drive but I do like their beers and they have the most delicious pretzels!

Talk about really screwing up the 'golden goose' - now the brewery in Ashburn is closing in the first quarter of 2009. What a mess!!

In the great cosmos of things, maybe someone, like Jerry, will buy the facility and get life back to normal. Colin Harding, Fairfax Station, VA

RIP!! Boy, did these guys screw this one up!! Was out there a week ago and that was the topic of conversation. Since the A-B buy-out, all down hill - starting with the Oak Barrel Stout - tried to go on the cheap. Can only imagine how upset Jerry is. Lots of good memories. Next question - where do we get growlers filled now - a month or so ago, went to Vintage 50 in Leesburg.

The brewpub is CLOSED. That faceless International conglomerate closed it as many feared. Oh well, it was once a proud, and very popular place to have some exceptional brews.

Well, went back on May 4 - the mystique is gone - as many of us expected would happen. I asked the guy behind the bar - who didn't appear to have a clue about the beers - how business was - he said problem with the location. I told him that previously it was the location that gave this place a cult following - place was nearly empty - never used to be like this. All the good Dominion beers are gone. What a shame!!! What a shame!!!

Don't waste your time!!! Went there for dinner and a couple of beers. Right off you know when you go into a brewpub and they put a sushi menu in front of you you're in trouble. They do have a regular menu also. I did have a burger that was pretty good though. The waiter knew nothing about the beers. I had to go to the bar myself to get my second beer! Those who appear to be regulars seem to get better attention. What happens if they loose them?

As a follow-up review, went there last Saturday to get a growler of Oak Barrel Stout - which used to be their signature brew - and one that I looked forward to getting. But, boy, have things changed. The Oak Barrel Stout I got was NOTHING like the Oak Barrel Stout that I used to get before the sale to A-B. It was thin, had carbination, and left a tinny, metalic flavor after-taste. I also agree with the previous reviewer on the qulaity of the food - certainly came from Costco. This place has REALLY gone down hill.
What a shame!!! This place had a cult following - this must really bother Jerry. It takes years to build a reputation - and minutes to destroy it. I sent a e-mail to the brewery last Monday on the Oak Barrel Stout issue - have yet to get an answer.

I had been a huge fan of Old Dominion, but since the takeover it has turned. The seasonal beers are still good, but they are now promoting the Bass and Stella, which shouldn't even be there. The food used to be good--a limited menu with quality items. Now it is defrosted packages I recognize from Costco. Be done and bid farewell

Went to the Old Dominion to eat; have bought beer there on numerous occasions, but hadn't eaten there in over a year. While the beers, although not as many as before the buy-out, were good, the food could be describe at best as marginal. This is a shame as we had always previously enjoyed the food. Am also getting the feeling that it is now losing some of its cult feelings - again a shame. Am I the only one?

Pub has reopened; went there on Saturday and the place was packed. Smelled of fresh paint, new carpets, etc - general spiffing up. Beers still great, but plan to start carrying some Fordham beers.

Tried to have lunch at OD yesterday (Fri 3 Mar). Closed from 1 March to 19 March for renovations. I wonder if this has anything to do with the sale to A-B? And will it impact the beer? And food?

From Monday, February 19, Washington Post:
Beer Giant, Others Eye Old Dominion's Territory
Monday, February 19, 2007; D04
A group of partners that includes the beer giant Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis has applied for a new brewery license at Old Dominion Brewing Co. in Ashburn, another sign that the popular pub near Dulles International Airport is close to changing ownership.
Coastal Brewing Co. filed the application with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Jan. 29, according to Beth Straeten, a spokeswoman for the department. She said it takes at least 30 days for a brewing license to be approved.
Old Dominion President Jerry Bailey declined to comment yesterday, but he confirmed last month that the sale of the microbrewery was imminent.
Besides Anheuser-Busch, the managing members on the application include William L. Muehlhauser, Straeten said. Muehlhauser and his son and partner, Kyle, own the Ram's Head Tavern, a Baltimore-based brewery chain. He did not return a message left with a tavern manager yesterday. A spokesman for Anheuser-Busch said the company had no comment.
The brewery makes nearly 20 brands of beer, including Dominion Ale, Old Dubliner, and Tuppers' Hop Pocket Pils. Old Dominion also brews special recipes for other local outlets. In 2006 it was the 50th-largest brewery in the country.

Stopped by yesterday - place was packed - staff a little overwhelmed - someone else made the same comment.
On the sale, still not done and, according to an article written by Gregg Wiggins in the Feb/March 07 edition of Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, the latest rumor is that it may be sold to two brewing companies; a majority interest to Fordham Brewing Co and a minority interest to A-B. I asked the staff; they didn't know any more than what was in the Brewing News.
I suppose everyone's concern is that when it is sold, the culture of the place will change. Where else do you find a brewpub in the middle of an industrial park with no signs of its existence except is what is over the door - and the place is packed - a cult following. We call it the 'pharmacy' where we go to get our 'prescriptions' filled.
One good thing - their annual beer festival will continue to be held from June 22-24; location undetermined as of now. Their previous location - an empty field - has been sold and is being built upon; welcome to northern Virginia.

Stopped by en route to some other places and had a few samples. Porter was disappointing, not very interesting at all. Double Red was served ala nitro. Malty, caramel-toffee flavors, nice hops--a decent brew. Chief's Elixir was dry-hopped and unfiltered. Very refreshing and tasty. ESB was medium bitter, smooth and very drinkable. Serversseem more disinterested with each of my visits. I saw some bar patrons sit 5+ minutes w/o service and only 5 people were at the bar in all. (My service was good, to be fair.) $1.75 for a 4 oz. sample only tells me that they really don't want to be bothered with samples here.

Old Dominion remains a very good regional brewery and brewpub in Ashburn, VA. West Coast Brew Guy made a good point about broad range with little variety, and under its new ownership, the Dominion Brewery is consolidating repetitive recipes and innovating new ones such as the Double Red ale kegged with nitrogen. Brewing quality and consistency remain high, and the food, service, and atmosphere remain very good. I am a regular and am excited for the future of ODBC.

Except for a couple of good beer bars and the penetration of the market by Dogfish Head, the Washington DC area is a beer wasteland. Unfortunately, Old Dominion is a major reason. Except for Tupper's Hop Pocket (which really is a great beer), their beer line is the most unimaginative that I've come across. The Oak Barrel Stout had promise, but the vanilla hints overpower the other flavors. The rest of the line, which covers the "vast" gamut from amber to pale ale (with maybe an outlier stout or something) is extemely boring. There is little real difference between all of the bland lagers that Old Dominion puts out. Unfortunately, beer is a gimmick in DC instead of an art form, and that has allowed Old Dominion to foist such an inferior product onto lazy restaraunteurs and bar owners in the area, who then slap their name on the beer in order to fool the credulous customers. Almost without exception, each restaurant or bar in the area that boasts its "own" beer is carrying a carbon-copy of the standard, bland Old Dominion lager. Thus, instead of the thriving beer community that exists on the west coast, Washington has few decent brewers. While not surprising, considering the fact that Sierra Nevada is seen as a microbrew here, it is sad. Thank God for Dogfigh Head which, for people who really appreciate beer, is going to clean up the competition as they expand.

We've gone several times to the Old Dominion, starting with one of their brew fests in the field behind the brewery. It was a good time, and my sweetie basically camped out in front of the Oak Barrel Stout tap and used up every festival chit he had.
We frequent the restaurant every couple of months (we cover over from MoCo, MD), and while the waitstaff near the bar is sketchy, the bartenders are always genial and helpful. The southwestern chicken salad is *amazing* and I'm told the burger is fantastic.
We learned from a friend that going on Sundays ensures a brewery tour with a bartender - and lots of samples. We also learned that if you ask sweetly at the bar, you can get some vanilla ice cream dropped into your Oak Barrel Stout for a Float you won't forget! It's divine!

I have been to Old Dominion Brew Pub on several occasions over the past handful of years and have never had the urge to write a review to let others know about my experiences while there. For the most part because there was never anything great or that stood out, positive or negative, that was worth mentining to others - until now! I initially went to Old Dominion years ago because a friend had informed me of there FREE brewery tours that they offer on the weekends and subsequently got hooked on their beer (an amazing selection with decent to good food!). Everythime I have family or friends visit from out of town it has been a staple in our to do list of activities to be sure to go on the tour of Old Dominion, all together I would have to say that I have been on more than a dozen total over the years, and yet all of them for free! In the dozen or so visits we have had many different tour guides, from the Owner to Sales Reps to Brewers and even the occasional bartender that would bring us through the brewery, and they have always been fun and our guests have always had a pretty good time. However, on January 21st we were there with friends that were visiting from Jersey, so of course a Brewery Tour was in order. On this day we had experienced, hands down the best tour that we have ever had not only at Old Dominion but probably anywhere else that we have taken tours over the years! The individual that gave the tour, Dave, said he was a bartender there (not sure if that could be true!) and he had a certain unique speaking style and humor that he injected through out our tour. From making us laugh while learning about the brewing process I remember more from this tour than the others combined, all while enjoying complimentary brews! And even though he said he had only been at Old Dominion a short time (not sure if we believe that though after how the tour went!) he was more thourogh, informative and energetic than any other tour that we have been a apart of. He explained there Millenium Oak Barrel and even though it is $100 a case, a bargain by the way, both my husband and I and our friends left with a case each and 4 of their Growlers (togo beer!) filled with the real Oak Barrel Stout (delicious, I might add!).
I realize that i am going on and on but I feel that this tour guide deserves it and if you are in the area, living or visiting, be sure to stop by for a brewery tour and hope that you get Dave the bartender too!
Thanks Old Dominion and keep making the Great Beer!
