Went to Richmond for the Fall 2007 race. We went to Richbrau late on a Wednesday night. The service was fantastic given that it was close to 10:00pm and figured that we would not be able to get dinner. He had a hamburger and I had the duck burrito. Both were So-So and I had to ask for salsa for my tortilla chips (it was pace). It is a decent place if you want a quick inexpensive meal. The beer on the other was great. He had the India Pale Ale. He judges all brewers by this beer. He thought it was very good. I tried the Old Nick Pale Ale, The Dunkel Weizen, and the Oatmeal Stout. I would definitely recommend all three. The hassle of getting to and around downtown Richmond is high. However, if you are going to be down there, be sure to stop by Richbrau. It is worth the effort.

I can't believe there are still places where one can sit at the bar and have smokers on either side. Good ole' Va. with their dependency on the tobacco industry. Anyway, I digress. The IPA was delicious. The cask was pretty tasty, and the atmosphere was beer friendly. Tough place to find parking even on a Sat. afternoon.

Richmond is a good town for beer lovers. While Richbrau isn't of the quality of many other places in town, it is a neat place with (usually( friendly staff. Had a scotch ale--sweet, malty, alcohol noticable in the nose, but not warming on the tongue. Wheat Stout was very mild and drinkable. Lightly carbonated with a great nose. Old Nick Pale on the cask was pretty nice; hops were only noticable at the finish.

Had the Pale Ale and the Octoberfest. Both Good, nothing exceptional but they went well with lunch (which was very good). Bartender attentive and friendly. Liked the location downtown. Would go back.

HAD THE SAMPLER WHICH INCLUDED: GOLDEN ALE, PILSNER, PORTER, IPA, PALE ALE, SCOTTISH WEE HEAVY, OCTOBERFEST. BEERS SERVED COLD!!! IPA AND PALE COULD HAVE BEEN MORE BITTER. I FELT THE SCOTTISH WEE HEAVY AND PILS WERE NOT TO STYLE. BEST BEER WAS THE BOTTLE OF PUMPKIN WHEAT THAT I BOUGHT AT THE COOLER. NICE SPORTS-BAR TYPE ATMOSPHERE UPSTAIRS WITH T.V.S, POOL TABLES AND DARTBOARDS. CHECK OUT LEGEND ACROSS THE RIVER!

I visited this brewpub on 10/27/06 and had the following brews; Oktoberfest Lager, Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, Pumpkin Wheat Ale, India Pale Ale, Big Nasty Porter, Griffin Golden Ale, & Old Nick Pale Ale. My waiter was a bit unattentive for only having two tables to serve. I was very disappointed that I had to purchase two sampler rounds in order to sample all seven of their beers. Their sampler rounds consist of only 5 beers and they would not let me sample the other two without purchasing another round. Most of their beers were a bit thin and uninteresting. I did enjoy their IPA and bought three bombers to bring home with me. They have dart boards and pool tables upstairs.

I was in during a day when half the staff had nothing to do. The service was great. I was the only one to wait on for the 1st half my visit, which lasted about 2 hours. Staff is friendly. The buffalo wings were pretty good. The cobbler was excellant. As far as the beers go, they need a lot of work. The IPA was very good. Nicely hopped and tasting. The cask conditioned Pale Ale was good also. They however pour it into an ice cold glass which kind of defeats the purpose. The Oktoberfest seasonal was tasteless. And the Porter was a big disappointment in that it had a vinagery taste.

Unlike the last reviewer, I had a very pleasant experience. I sat at the bar and the bartender was quick with service, even though it was a busy friday night. When he had some down time he answered my questions about the beer and their brewing process. He seemed to be a nice guy.
I was a bit tuckered after a long two days, so I only had two beers. The seasonal Kolish (4.7 abv) was good, but a little weak. The IPA (6.2), otoh, was great! You could smell the amarillo hops a mile away. I was worried that all the hops would make the beer harsh, but I was pleasantly surprised as it was nicely balanced.
I was surprised that in the middle of a hot and humid July they did not have any wheat beers on while I was there. They also serve cask beer, but they had just run out, I got about a tenth of a glass.
I had already had dinner, so I did not eat, so I can not comment on the food.

Mmm. Maybe an off night, but I came in around 7pm tonight and sat at the bar. Asked about a sampler, and was told that she didn't have any sampler glasses, so I couldn't get it. Mmm. Cocktail glasses wouldn't work? Ordered an IPA. Probably the worse I've ever had, and I'm a bit of an IPA consumer. Then ordered a Pale Ale, OK at best. Ordered food. She forgot my clam chowder (or should I say never heard that part of the order, b/c she was barely paying attention once she finally asked if I wanted anything to eat, after I had asked for a menu 10 minutes before).
Ordered the fish n chips. Soggy. Then, without asking if I was done, she brought my check...I'm sitting at the bar! When I told her that I wasn't done, and wanted another drink, you'd think that I asked her to work the overnight shift.
By the way, there were only 3 other people at the bar when I arrived, then me and another guy after about 10 minutes, so it wasn't like she was busy.
Then, to top it off, after she brought my food, I had to ask for ketchup, silverware, etc...she stopped for a bite of her food on her way to get those items!!!
Unreal. If the beer had been good, I could get over the service, but the combo of crap beer, bad food, and very poor service, makes this the worse brewpub I've ever been to out of over 50.

I have to say, I think Richbrau gets a bad wrap. It's true not all their beers are great, but I personally love a good IPA or Porter, and they do a fantastic job on both those beers. Definitely among the best of their kind with those 2 beers. They also occasionally have an espresso stout that is just out of this world. I wish they had this beer all the time, because it is definitely a world class stout. Add to that great location, nice cozy atmosphere, and attentive service. What more could you ask for?

Found some new selections this trip into town. Belgian White was refreshing with the typical flavors and perhaps a hint of anise. Varietal IPA was English styled, very drinkable, hops and malt well-balanced. The Imperial Stout was on a nitro pour, so of course it was smooth, but also with a slight sweetness up front. Service was slow, considering I was one of two patrons at the bar.

Tried Pale Ale, Pumpkin Wheat, Porter, and Imperial Stout. They were all very good. Pumpkin was not overpowered with spices...good balance. The quality and selection of food was also good. The only shortfall was the service. Waited long for beer initially because glasses were not washed. Waitress was slow physically and mentally.

Had been here in the past, and encountered a funkiness in all the beers that a server told me was due to the "lines being all messed up".(!?) There was an off (same) flavor in everything, but you could tell that they were made well, if that makes sense. Anyhow, on this trip I went with lower expectations and was very pleasantly surprised! There were some beers I didn't care for, but at least I knew why! I really enjoyed the Pre-Prohibition Pils and the Hogwash IPA. They both would merit several tastes on my next visit. I'm encouraged by the upgrade in quality, no matter what was the cause of my earlier disappointment.

Been a while since I stopped in at Richbrau, and the improvement in the beer was nothing short of spectacular. The Griffin Golden Ale and the Barleywine in particular were great. I had the Italian Panini in the Taphouse, and I've been dreaming about its luscious blend of cheese, meat, and portabella. Very good experience that I mean to repeat, and soon.

The seasonal special was excellent, and they had it on cask as well. The barley wine was also quite nice. Service was also very good, the overall interior setting and the location worked well. A very nice place to stop while visiting Richmond.

Parking in this section of town is limited and one should be prepared to walk here if possible. The atmosphere in this old building was quite comfortable and the waitstaff very pleasant, though somewaht slow. The beers were great but not exceptional. As with all places, they have their pedigrees and their mutts. I found the Big Nasty Porter and Shockoe Espresso Stout full-bodied and roasty. The barleywine will probably improve with age and the Oktoberfest was well-balanced. This is certainly worth a visit and you should take home some of your favorites in bottles.

This place rocked! I was in town on business and enjoyed my Thursday evening at Richbrau. The Big Nasty Porter kicked some serious ass and they had Oban single malt scotch! What more could a guy ask for??? How about a super-cool bartender named Tina? They've got that too!!! Really enjoyed the live jazz too. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT PEOPLE!!!

In an excellent part of Richmond this brewpub is worth a visit. We stopped in for a nightcap and a quick snack. Not very crowded, but it was Sunday night. Friendly staff, food was ok and the beer good. I'ld go back and try something different.

Chili was very good, beer was not. Service was poor. Bartender had no knowledge about beer, tried to serve me a lager when I wanted something in the India Pale Ale category. Bartender also appeared to be less than enthusiatic about having to actually work, even though there were only about 5 people in the bar at the time.
