I visited in late March and had a sampler of their 5 beers (Pale Ale, Toasted Blond, Amber Ale, Second Alarm Smoked Porter, and Damn Good Stout). The Toasted Blond was very good with a great malty smell and taste. The Second Alarm Smoked Porter I was told was "known as the working man's beer". It smelled great and had a nice woody flavor. The Damn Good Stout was a sweet stout, which I then had a full glass of.
The bar itself got very loud around 9pm when a dj started. Prior to that there were still quite a few groups of students sitting together talking. There is a restaurant side separate from the bar area, and a back bar (with a dance floor?) I did not venture into. The bar itself becomes a partially open patio on warm days when the large garage door is lifted. Great university area atmosphere.
The bartender was excellent. He took the time to come over to my table to talk to me about the beers.

Only had the Steam beer seasonal which was decent, not stellar. The recent fire on the premises was confined to the roof which is too bad cause a good razing could only improve the ambience. The place is stuck somewhere between hip and grunge. Roll-up garage doors in teh bar facade were a nice touch.

Opening a brewpub in a college town is always a smart thing. I guess thats all this place has going for itself. The bartender knew nothing about the brews on tap. The original recipes need to be changed or something; they all taste like crap. The seasonal was a steamed lager which was the only beer there that did not taste skunked.

Visited at lunchtime on a weekday, and won't go back. The food was OK (nothing but half-burnt, flame-fired pizza on the menu), but the service was terrible (even though the place was almost empty when we arrived, we had to wait almost 10 minutes for a waitress to wander over to our table). The Pale Ale was decent, but everything else was thin with little taste. The Stout and the seasonal Scotch Ale were especially disappointing. Fortunately, we started with a sampler, so we were spared the waste of ordering full pints.

I`ve been here a few times.I like their stout.I think the best time to go is a weekend night when it`s all about the party and the club in the back is open.

It's worth singing the praises of this place again...it's far and away the best bar in New Haven (and the only brewpub). The four flagship beers--blonde, amBar, pale ale, and stout--are always complimented by a seasonal (in 2004, we've seen a barleywine and the 'raven haired beauty' black ale), and every single one is shockingly good. The BAR style tends towards sweeter, creamier beers with very smooth aftertastes--admittedly, these will never win GABF medals in their categories--but the brewers here show just how tasty beer can be. And what a better accompaniment than BAR's thin crust pizza, which rivals the big boys of New Haven pizza. Thursday night pints are $1, but this place is worth visiting any day of the week.

On our way home from Mystic, we decided to stop in a CT brewpub. The location is cool, right next to Yale University. We were expecting to get dinner here...oddly, though, the only thing on the menu was pizza. Granted, a lot of types of pizza, but only pizza (and 1 type of odd salad with pears and nuts and stuff). So, not in the mood for this, I can't comment on the food. It might be great pizza, but can they expand the menu just a little bit? Well, we waited and waited for a bartender to appear...no one did. We instead went over to the connecting bar in the other room. The sampler was mediocre. Most of the styles were flat tasting. The tap for the stout was not apparently working, according to the bartender. He made no effort to get us any from one of the other taps in the opposite room. I am not a huge stout fan anyway, so I didn't complain. The barleywine seasonal ale was pretty much the only decent beer they had. The entire place, some former garage or something I think, was absolutely freezing. Overall, Bru Rm was a disappointment. Maybe I am more of a traditionalist with brewpubs. This place was just a bit too different for me. It seemed to be trying very hard to come across as trendy, and not focusing on the beers as much as I might have hoped for.

BAR is the place to be on New Haven Thursdays. Their $1 pints and $1.50 slice combo is the best in town...hand's down. Thursday attracts the Yale crowd, and the rest of the week tends to be mostly locals. The seasonal brews are always a treat; the Toasted Blonde is the city's best smelling beer. Oh yeah..how bout those waitresses? Wow.

Went for Saturday dinner. Nice place, beer was all drinkable but unexceptionable. Not the place to go for new haven pizza, theirs was dry and short on cheeze and burnt. Go to Peppes/Sallys/Modern for the pie, go to bar for a drink.

This has got to be one of the Great Brew Pubs, Jeff put out an excellent ale, we attended the Ale festival there early this year, and WOW, what a time. Even the thin crust pizza was great,,, good times can only be had at a quality establishment like this...

Simply a very cool place. Pale Ale is hoppy & balanced, and is the perfect accompaniment to the real New Haven style pizza. Tip : If you want to have a few pints & pizza- go early- tends to get a little clubby after 9:00pm..

Real nice atmosphere; but a few problems with beer quality and service. The stout and octoberfests were too syrupy and the pale ale had a slight soapy taste. It took forever to get service at the bar; but the servers were pleasant once we were attended to.

It's definitely a place you need to check out- the beer and pizza are great! Throw in some loud music and a dance club with euro undertones- you'll be coming back for more!

I only got to try the Stout, which was a tiny bit too yeasty, but still an excellent brew. If you planning to go to the dance floor wear ear plugs. A great place for Pisces in leopard skin to meet.

The place looks very cool. I had a Pale Ale and it was delicious. My wife and I had an artichoke pizza. The crust is wafer-thin but tastes great. Good place on a lazy weekend afternoon. No crowd so you can kick back with a few pitchers and chill with friends.

Very cool place, 3 seperate rooms, one of them was a dance club with big trees in the middle of the floor, very different. Only 4 beers and one seasonal. The gourmet pizza looked great. Very different from your typical brewpub.
