Coming from Portland, Or. perhaps my expectations are to high. But, I will never go to a Gordon Biersch again. Not only is the beer choices slim and i admint this visit i only tried the Seasonal but it was very marginal, a poor pint pour and then they charged $5.75! Lets see, marginal beer, marginal pour and expensive! In and around San Jose there are many Brewery choices, several worth the Drive also. Example is the El Toro Brewery, 20 min south in Morgan Hill. Now that is a Beer Hall. Excellent IPA. Gordon Biersch, toss in some Hops next batch you are brewing.

First off,Gordon Bierschs Marzen was my introduction to a world of beer beyond Miller,Coors and my then favorite Henry Weinhards. And over the past decade I've managed to get to 13 of their locations (and they keep growing). They have been consistent throughout.Decent beer, great food and overall excellent service. There is a tendency toward yuppieism but that isn't all that big a deal.Of the three Bay Area locations,San Jose is my least favorite but there is nothing terribly wrong with it.There can be a post-work rush and it jams when live jazz is on tap.Ordered up a Marzen before getting some food.Always tasty, especially fresh from the taps.Tried there fish tacos for the first time.Stuffed with blackened Mahi-mahi and sided with a small mountain of great coleslaw,it was a great healthy lunch. It did come looking more like a burrito but that made it a bit less messy compared to the traditional taco.Their Oktoberfest was gone with the WinterBock a few weeks away from being ready.Opted for a Blonde Bock.It actually had a crisper more distinctive flavor than the Marzen but the same color. At 7.2%ABV,I walked out the door quite happy. The only thing that bothered me was the gnats flitting about(and this wasn't an isolated incident).Still highly recommended but the GB in Honolulu is da kine.

The beer was rather pedestrian. The only one that stood out was the seasonal Fest beer. All the other beers had quite a weak flavor; nothing that really stood out.
The garlic fries and wings are unique and go well with the plain jane beer.

I loved the food but the beer could use some work. Long waits on weekends are hard to stomach with lackluster beer. The ale tased like an expensive michelobe.

Yuppiefied, watered-down beer and character. They definitely cater to the image crowd that would like to look like they know beer but not actually have to drink anything more challenging than Bud Lite. They only have four brews on tap, and all of them share a certain taste and blandness. Better than having to drink mass-produced swill, but not by a huge margin. Food is awesome though. But in general, this isn't a "Pubcrawler guy" kind of place. And the beer is expensive.

The prices are to high for that type of a place. Had it been cheaper, it would have been more attractive.

Summary: food, beer and waiter are just average, but getting a table is more than lousy, it is a disaster! The past weeks I went there 3 times. All in all I was more than very disappointed. The first time I was told the waiting list is 60 minutes although we saw 1/3 empty tables. The second time I called for a resvervation. They told me we could get a table in 15 minutes. Sounds good? Well we went there immediately, arriving 10 minutes after I called. We had to wait for 30 minutes!!! And again plenty of empty tables. The waiter was ok, nothing to complain. Food & beer was reasonable, nothing excited. The third time I went there again the same story: waiting list 45 minutes, and 1/3 empty tables. We went somewhere else! I will avoid GB in future.

Beers I had were of good quality, especially the Marzen. Food is definitely better and more important then beer. Services was fair considering they had a ton of wait staff. Outdoor patio was great.

Interesting, lagers only. Marzen was good, as was the Dunkel. Some adjustment required for those used to ales only, but worth the effort. Be aware, though, GB is more restaurant oriented than the average brewpub.

I was disappointed. The selection of beers was limited to three on my two visits, two of which were wheat beers. The Marzen was acceptable but not memorable. Unfortunately, the staff could tell me little about the selection or seasonal offerings. In fact, the focus seemed to be entirely on serving food, which was good. This is an acceptable place only for a beer lover in San Jose who has run out of options.

There are very few German beers I find worth drinking (I'm a true Belgiophile), but GB brews some of the more interesting styles, and succeeds in making them quite good and true to their German counterparts. The Marzen is especially good -- mid- to full-body, and very well balanced. The hefeweizen (on tap only in summer) has a very German tasting yeast, much more interesting and better than the typical American Hefe (such as Widmer). Unfortunately, the beer is not nearly as good when bottled.

Coming from Portland maybe I had my sights set too high, but this place was disappointing. The two kinds of beer I had were bland and non-descript.

The rumor mill states the owner has such a big head that he will serve a spoiled batch and giggle that the Yuppies cannot tell. Not a place to go for quality craft brews.

GB produces a number of immature lagers that taste somewhere between wort and swill. People who truly enjoy lagers should steer clear, as the only lager style GB seems capable of accurately producing is BudMillOors clones.

Hooray for a brewpub willing to buck the ale only trend. The lagers I sampled were very well crafted. Unfortunately there were only three house beers available, and they were obviously aimed at pleasing the mainstream customer. They were very similar to each other, only timid variations on the theme were evidenced. Descriptions of the brews were misleading. The "highly hopped" Pils was "just barely hopped." The "sweet" Marzen was maybe just barely. The "full bodied" Dunkel was medium to light bodied. All were quality lagers but were not different enough to provide any degree of welcome variety.
