A "must-stop" for any beer pilgrim coming to Pittsburgh. 42 taps, and if you want to know the variety on tap, here's what I tasted: Green Flash IPA, Moylands Kilt Lifter, and Southern Tier Oat. This kind of good beer across the board is what you'll find here. The Headwiches are as advertised; split one with a friend, and still was stuffed. Bottle shop upstairs is a great resource for those hard to find beers. All in all, what better reasons could you have for hanging out on Carson Street?

I always barcrawl Carson at least once every visit to Pittsburgh and seem to stop at Fatheads for one beer just about everytime. Most recent stop was 11/22. Alway a great well rounded draft selection with something for every beer geek. Happy to find Victory HopWallop on this time as I had never before had it on tap though I've had it bottled previously. A bit pricier at $5.00 a pint than Smokin' Joe's just down the street but still worth the stop. One of Pittsburgh's best beer bars for sure. ADD a bonus point for the nice bottle/gift shop located upstairs. Cool place to check out.

We had visited Fat Heads many years ago before they expanded and remodeled and over the past few years we've resumed our visits. Their above average beer selection has become even better. There is definitely something for everyone on tap. This visit, we tried the Big Daddy IPA, a great San Francisco micro that I had not drank since my last visit to CA. I wish we could get this one by the case here!

Sitting in the bar area, I perused the menu and found it to be overwhelming. I have never seen so many enticing sandwiches listed in one place. Regretfully, we weren't ready to eat, but we did get a strong whiff of garlic from a plate being delivered. All of the food going by looked and smelled good. Hope to try the eats sometime soon.

In my opinion, this is one of the nicer places on Carson to hang out and people watch while enjoying quality beer. Give it a try!

There are three microbreweries (at least) in Pittsburgh. I assume the two you meant were Penn and the Church. You left out the wonderful East End Brewing, which almost certainly occupies a tap or two at Fat Head's (which I'll agree is an awesome place for beer lovers).

I'v never reviewed Fatheads and I really don't know why. They are the absolute best. Pittsburgh has a short list of microbreweries (2), so this is the place to go. Not only is the beer selection the best in town, the food is incredible. On top of that is the service. They care. Amy & Sarah are the best bartenders in the city. You won't be, nobody is, disappointed here.

Like any bar on the Carson strip on a Saturday evening: large, loud and obnoxious. Peace-and-Quiet pubcrawlers should come during off-hours only. I braved the crowd because I wanted a good burger right then and everyone knows these guys have the best burgers in town. The crowd was worth it and the kitchen did not disappoint.

Whereas the Sharp is the place to go for the best import selection, Fat Head's is focused primarily on American craft brews first and quality imports second. Beer selection and general atmosphere are comparable to Smokin' Joe's down the street, though SJ's has a broader beer selection and less friendly dining atmosphere.

Service was very attentive and servers did their jobs as quickly as they could; however, they were sometimes bogged down and overwhelmed by the crowd.

This is a great place to get a regional or national American craft brew for to wash down a scrumptious burger. Also a good place to cut loose when the crowd starts pouring in off of Carson. One of Pittsburgh's best beer bars.

If you're looking for a location for a Pittsburgh pub crawl, Carson St. would be a good one. For sheer numbers, Fat Head's would lead the way in this area. 38 taps and one hand pump of great beer from a variety of places. Seem to always have Stone products on for fans such as I. The crowd is sometimes hard to figure, but that's OK, just enjoy your beer. "Headwiches" are a mouthful (or three), and help to blunt the effects of the great beers. Obviously worth a stop.

Great place, and not afraid to spend some money on themselves: some other Pittsburgh bars could learn some things about making yourself look good from Fat Head's. I'm not going to get into a slanging match about whose selection is better (only...Kelly's? Hah? Things get radically better there in the past 10 months?), Fat Head's is great, and the only objection I'd make is that I'd really rather see more local beers, more PA beers here instead of all the Rogue and Stone and Bell's and imports. But I'm nitpicking. The service I got was happy and attentive, the food was delicious and humongous (house-made chips are excellent), and the vibe is great. Lots of pretty women, lots of beer-savvy guys, although there were a disturbing number of Lite bottles in evidence...c'est la vie. Went twice in two days, and enjoyed myself immensely.

Instead of trying to bowl over patrons with the size of the portions, the restaurant would be better off providing cold cuts (lunch meats) that have some differentiating flavor. Cut down on the size of the portion and increase the quality of what is served. It is a sad state of affairs when the ham is almost indistinguishable from the turkey or the roast beef. Real deli people from NJ or NY recognize "flim" from "flam" and your oversized non-flavored sandwiches just don't do it. Have you ever heard of "Boar's Head" or "Thumanns?" Cut the gelatin filler and BS and give the customer a real sandwich! Volume is not quality. At this rate, you would'nt last one week in the NYC area.

Great Great So So Good Good
Although everyone raves on the food in the other reviews, i had a bad experience the last time i went here. they have great beer with solid selection but what really bugs me is the crowd. tons of mullets. its a mullet fest in that place!! I like Pipers across the street a bit better. crowd is more interesting and food is better in this humble reviewers unbiased opinion. For beer this is about number 4 in the top pixsburgh places. Sharp edge and kelly's are better as well as dee's hot dog shop. a good place overall however (particularly if you have a bad haircut)

This is one of my favorite restaurants...go there literally ALL the time. The burgers are the best in the city. Wings are excellent. Am told that everything else is really good as well. The service is truly awful though. Every once in awhile you will get someone who cares and is competent but most of the time the service is terrible. If they refill your drinks promptly they forget your appetizer. If they remember your appetizer it comes out with the rest of your food. I could go on and on. Don't let that scare you away though...the food is *definitely* worth suffering through the service.

Great Beer Bar on Pittsburgh's South Side. Stopped in last night to down a pint after a dinner meeting, wife couldn't get served becuase she forgot her ID even though she's 30 but I guess that's policy, esp. in an area of town frequented by college students. Terrific beer selection on tap, good variety plus numerous bottled beer. This place is much better since they remodeled, much roomier and improved the already postive atmosphere. On a negative note, the bartender was quite loud and a bit brash, she was screaming outLOUD about a kitchen staff's screw-up. Tip to her: People are here to relax and enjoy the great beer selection, not hear your shrill bitching about the kitchen staff. Stop by when you are in the 'Burgh or make it a point if you live here and have not visited yet.

Fat Heads is great for both the experienced and casual beer drinker. A wide selection of beers (most on tap) is displayed behind the bar for all to see. Staff is very attentive even when the place is packed on a Friday or Saturday night. Taps and lines are kept clean and so the quality of beer is maintained. Food is great. Try the wings, I'm told they are some of the best in the city.

Fat Head's is located on the South Side of Pittsburgh.. About 1 mile from downtown Pittsburgh, along the busy Carson street corridor.

Fat Head's packs an impressive array of positives... Nice tap head display on a bar back you can actually see and want to see, great selection of drafts and bottle, piping hot fresh food (from there seemingly 100 or more item menu - although a tad lacking on vegetarian selections)...

I downed a veggie sub with fries and chips which hit the spot...I also downed a few brews including an Dunnik(sp?) (new on draft) and a Duvel from a bottle...Sampled their new tap of Erie Brewing's RailBender... not my choice...

For a Monday past 11pm things were still hopping with about 4 people eating at the bar and another dozen downing a few drinks...

Fat Head's is a big place and also has outdoor courtyard seating, which is hard to find in Pittsburgh...

From the beer to the food to the interior Fat Head's should be the role model for other bars. Now if we can only get them to stop carrying that Bud/Miller/IC Light swill...

On my last visit Fathead's had 5 Belgians on tap, 4 outstanding IPA's one on cask, a barleywine, and many other excellent craft brews. The taps change constantly because the owner knows his beer and is attentive to what quality beer is available. The food is up to these same standards. You can wash down great sandwiches and wings with superb beer. What more can you ask from an establishment?

This place has the best sandwiches and cheesesticks in Pittsburgh and has some of the best wings in the city as well. The honey mustard dip is incredible and the tap selection is wonderful. If you are in town for any reason, make a point to head to the South Side for lunch or dinner to experience this place.

The food and service are fantastic. Great beers to choose from at reasonable prices, unlike the sharp edge. Best wings I ever had! Will always stop in for a beer and sandwich/wings when on the S. Side.

The recent expansion has added a patio for outside dining. The beer on tap selection has widened to 28, with most being top notch micros. Food is as tasty and ample as always. Just a great stop for anyone interested in having a quality beer with a humongous sandwich.
