FWIW, This review is based on my first and only visit: I stopped in for dinner with a group of eight. The most noteworthy aspect of the evening for me was the excellent service provided by our server; Always there when needed, but unobtrusive. We had wings and the German sampler (whatever it's actually called)as apps, all good. I'm not really a wing eater, but they were pretty darn tasty. I really liked the mustard w/ the German sampler. Entree was a Crab cake sammie & slaw, which was neither exciting nor sub par, C+.
I had a long journey home so rather than indulge in the fermentables w/ dinner I grabbed two bottles to go.I tasted the hefeweizen and doppelbock and purchased the doppel and hopfest. A common theme I've found through all three styles from legend is a little less pronounced nose than I'd expect.
The hefe was nice, bright. With the lessened aromatics I wasn't feeling the spice/bannana I usually expect from a hefe, but it was a nice brew.
Doppel was nice, sticks and doesn't leave you wanting. Pours dark brown with a medium-thin head that falls quickly. Nice syrupy mouthfeel. I'm not usually one to go for lager-ish beer but I'll drink this one again.
Hopfest was really nice. RED. Billed as ultra-hoppy it has a nice finish that is clean and unoppressive (unlike many of the "ridculously hoppy, punch-your-grandmother-in-the-face hoppy beers). I'm liking it a little warmer than I'd expect. I understand it's a seasonal, but here's to hoping the season lasts 12 months a year.
After one visit I get the impression Legend has some solid brews and I'm looking forward to getting back to RVA to test drive the many I missed.

Tried this place based on other reviews. The Bourbon Barrel Porter was so-so. The normal Porter was OK. However, I found the Golden Ale pretty good. They were all served a little too cold for my taste. (Kills the flavor.) Service was good, if you like your bartender chewing gum this is the place. The menu is quite interesting and varied and the dish I tried quite good.

Kind of a combination of my last two visits to Legend. Lager #2 was all about spices (coriander/clove?) was told it was " a #@!%-up" but some people like it. British Mild is definitely British in style with lots of flavor--a good session beer. ESB was malty with some nice hops to back it up. A little less bitter than most, but good. Imperial Stout had a good hoppy/roasty thing going on, not as much chocolate (or even caramel) as I've tasted before. This just in--Amy (bartender) is nuts! And that's a good thing!

Live music on Sunday's. I'm a "hop-head" which the Legend brews aren't particularly aimed at. However, they have a varried selection of lagers, pilsners, brown ales etc. plus they usually have a "Guest Beer" from another brewery. It's laid back. Casual dress- t-shirt and jeans will suffice, and the menu ain't half bad. All in all, I keep going back to the establishment on a regular basis. Check out their aniversery party coming in Febuary.

Love Legend. Back to Richmond= back to Legend. What makes this place great isn't just the food and beer- it is the local folk who are great to talk to-about beer, Richmond or whatever.

I stopped by here and enjoyed the sampler and noticed that they had a movie showing that night - they take a second run film and show it on the wall with a projector. I went to the other brew pubs in the area, then came back to see the movie. It was nice to have a pitcher and eat and enjoy the movie. Definitely a nice brew pub atmosphere. Odd location, but easily accessible to the bridge for easy escape.

This was the first time I've been to Legend, located in the heart of Richmond. I thought I was lost at first, I turned down 7th Street, which is more like an alley, but then I soon happened on the brewpub. They are doing some remodeling outside, but don't let that fool ya, use the side door next to the patio. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and eager to please. I spoke with the brewer about one of their seasonals (the hopster?) and he didn't seemed to annoyed by my incessant questions. Even the workers who were getting off shift stayed after to drink beer on the patio. If the workers drink the beer, you know it must be good...or free. I ordered the reuben and it was an excellent choice...probably the best reuben I have ever had. I also ordered the pub fries which were possibly the worst fries I have ever had. They were soggy and burnt...next time I'll order the German potato salad. All of the beer was expertly brewed and tasted excellent. I ordered the sampler, which is supposed to come with 6 small beers, but the waitress also let me sample the 3 seasonals that they had on tap. I guess they only do tours of the brewery on Saturdays, though. The atmosphere was pretty cool. It is nestled around some industry, ie, train tracks, some factories, next to the river. But that adds to the ambience instead of taking away from it. All in all, this is great brewpub and I can't wait to go back and try it again!

Being a local I frequent this place at least a couple of times a month. They have added a Pale Ale to their stable of permanent brews. If the staff doesn't tell ask about the seasonal brew. The hefeweisen is usually excellent as our the belgian styles they bust out. Right now it's a tripel that is quite tasty. Brown ale not my favorite but also a popular selection. Also worth mentioning they are family friendly been taking my little girl there since she was 4 months old and she is known by name.

Legend is probably the best Brewpub in the general Richmond area. Not that the competition is that stiff, but Legend really is a great place. Their beer selection is usually great, especially their IPA and Brown Ales. I am a dark beer lover, so I am always sure to sample their Porter. Sometimes it is truly spectacular, other times merely great. Of course, one of the best things about Legend is their great outdoor balcony, making Legend a great place to do in the summer. I have to laugh though at the person who said this place is "easy to find," since I have been there at least a dozen times and still manage to get lost looking for it. It is in an industrial area of Richmond, just over the bridge, but don't let that put you off. Legend is definitely worth the trip.

Stopped by on a brisk Monday afternoon looking for good beer and a place to relax. I found both. Legend is easy to find by crossing the Manchester Bridge from 8th St, and the taking the first exit, turning where it says "to 7th St". Had their Winter Ale--what a treat! After I ordered, was told that it was 2002 vintage, used champagne yeast, and logged in at 13%+. Obviously a beverage not to be rushed. It was filled with oak, plum/currant flavors and a slightly tart cherry finish. As I relaxed, I realized this; Legend employees always seem to have a particular style that doesn't fit with the norm. (Bohemian, "bad girl", funky, goth) And that's a good thing--sometimes you need to stir things up a bit. And they do it all well at Legend.

This place is in a mostly industrial area south of the river and downtown Richmond. They have a nice patio but the view from the patio is of huge industrial pipes. Inside, there is a bar atmosphere in contrast to the restaurant emphasis of most brewpubs. My wife and I sat outside and tried a sampler of the beers. They were all good and we ordered pints of the Golden IPA since we like hoppy ales. However, this is far from being an outstanding IPA. And using the name "Golden" for a "pale" ale seems odd, especially since "golden ale" is a mild style of ale served at many brewpubs. On our way out, we went through the inside and I noticed that our waitress had not told us about Big Tom's Double IPA. It had not been in the sampler or listed on the beer menu. So, we had to have a couple of pints of that. It was excellent, their best beer by far. I believe this was a seasonal but they should consider making it a regular. They also might want to re-think their "Golden IPA". It's not bad but it could be better.

Once you've been here, you can count on finding most of your favorites on tap the next time. But you'll also know that there will be something special to give a test ride. I usually try the brown, porter or IPA when I'm there, and can't say I leave disappointed. I remember the first time I tried their jambalaya--yum!! The place is cool, comfortable and a bit funky (especially the waitstaff--I believe they advertise for persons with their own unique style!). If you find yourself in the great city of Richmond, you've got to go to Legend!

The porter and brown ale were fantastic - the best of any I've had. The IPA was disappointing and not very hoppy or flavorful. The Pilsner tasted more like an IPA than the real thing, but it was a very good beer.
The food (prime rib sandwich, chicken sandwich) were not spectacular but definitely edible. Our waitress seemed to be heavily medicated.
The outdoor seating by the river is very nice and a perfect place for having a few porters and pilsners.

How about I just say that I was in Richmond for four days and went to Legend three times? Nah, I can't leave it at that. The food was great (had to get the chili for old times' sake, and I even got to sit in my old seat downstairs), the beer was great (10th Anniversary Ale rocked!), the service was excellent (and good-looking, too!), movie night was a blast, and the deck is outstanding. One hell of a brewpub, and the beer tastes great all over town.

I have moved since my last review. I now live in Grapevine, TX, home of one of the best brewpubs I have ever been to. BUT, Legend in Richmond still remains my favorite for many reasons... 1. Legend is the FIRST BREWPUB I ever visited....I didn't even know what a brewpub was.. It was this tiny little hole in the wall with a few tables when my Dad took me there the first time years ago. Now, every time I travel back to Virginia to visit the family, Legend is a REQUIRED STOP! AND... I am coming back next Monday, March 15, 2004! GET READY FOR ME!!!!

The porter was very good and that is saying something. Not too sweet as is the tendency lately (ex: Heavyweight) When was the last time you had a good fresh porter??? Chocolate porter also good as it cut down on the caramel flavour a wee bit. The pils was also quite nice-very drinkable with or without food. The others- golden, rye etc were OK but not exeptional. Service at the bar was great and food was good too. Not to be ignored at this bar is your fellow patrons- very nice barfellows- friendly and enthusiastic about beer and Legend. Overall a great, impromptu , sidetrip on our way through the Richmond area. Will stop again when going that way.

We enjoyed a very pleasant experience at Legend with an attentive waitstaff and management. Food and beers were very good with the APA as a standout for a hophead like myself. The vistas of the river and the Richmond skyline were excellent also. Looking forward to a return visit.

I haven't been to Legend since 1994 when I lived just south of Richmond in Chester, VA. Then it was a small and only had patio chairs outside. I always enjoyed having the Legend porter sitting outside looking over the Norfolk-Southern trainyard just having finished rock climbing at the wall on the James River. I am glad to see Legend is still going strong. Can anyone tell me what ever happened to the Cobblestone Brewpub in Shockoe Bottom. Thanks.

The beer was excellent. Not overdone, but a nice flavor and a nice finish. Nothing stood out especially, but just really good beers. I like to find a place that makes good quality beer without feeling the need to overflavor everything. This was definitely that place. The IPA was well-hopped, and the Lager had a smooth, creamy taste to it, with a slightly smoky finish, which was quite surprising. I am not a wheat beer fan, but my dinner companion said it was "pretty good." What a reviewer! The atmosphere of the place was great - outdoor patio - but the service was average. They had a lot of staff present, and they were very busy, it just seemed like we saw every other waitstaff person go by 4 times to every one of ours. I'll give them another shot before I slam the entire waitstaff, as we may have just been unlucky with a new hire or a short-timer. This is a definite stop each and every time I am in Richmond.

The beer is more than awsome. The porter and brown ales are definetly the best! The pub itself could use a little more excitment on the inside, but the outside deck is totally the place to be on a warm summers day.

The porter was very good. We did not care for the other ales or lagers, a case of personal tastes I guess. Brewpub was clean and friendly but the food didn't stand out from other brewpubs, not that it was bad, it just didn't stand out.
