Unfortunately they were out of the brown ale during my visit but more than made up for it with a wonderful Belgian-style ale. The cask-conditioned real ale was a hit. Food and service was very good. I recommend the cod.

Located off Harvard Square, John Harvard can be found below street level in a dark cavernous location that is a cross between the student union and a British pub. Usually offering at least 5 taps (at least during my recent visit) representative of most styles, such as a decent Pale Ale, a tasty and hearty Brown Ale and a deliciously hoppy (IBU 59) IPA. Great burgers and attentive service make this a worthwhile stop when in the Republic of Cambridge.

Plenty of beers on tap, all of which made me happy. The place was almost dead, so the service was obviously good. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and I hate to say it, but this was far and away the best part about my visit to Harvard :)

Stopped by on a Sat. afternoon (12/11). tried the Belgian style Tripel called tripel Lindy. It was true to style. Flavor held up well throughout. I often find that US brewed tripels are disappointing and the flavor drops off as soon as it hits your tongue. Not so here. The porter was also nice - rich, chocolatey.
I had the meatloaf. It was okay -- part of it a little dry esp. if you run out of BBQ gravy. Good mashed potatoes and healthy portion of vegetables. Overall the portions were more than ample for $9.99. The porter was a good complement.

Well we were back in Boston on the weekend of June 4th, 5th, and 6th. I agreed to follow my wife around if she would let us eat at all the brew pubs. John Harvards was our first stop for lunch on the 4th. My wife, daughter and I all liked our meals. Our waiter didn't even write the order down. He committed it to memory and there were no errors. I had the sampler. I am particularly fond of the IPA. The surroundings are pleasant with a large stained glass window at one end of the establishement. Out of the four brewpubs we visited, this was our favorite. We will be back.

My wife loved her salmon dinner. I thought the ribs were great. We both had the sampler. I thought all the beers were excellent. Took back 3 growlers to New Jersey. The pale ale, the red, and the nut brown. The server was knowledgeable and attentive. I would definitely go back for a return visit.

John Harvard's in Cambridge is a very solid and reliable place to drink craft beers. They always have about 6-8 beers, and they always range from light to dark. There's something there for everyone; their stouts are sublime, but the whole run of beers are of a very high standard. Their Belgian this past summer was fanastic. The food here is great; the NE Clam Chowder was, surprisingly, one of the best we had in our whole Boston trip. The service is friendly and casual.
This is the place to visit when visiting Cambridge - you just can't be disappointed.

Brewpub is in the basement of a building on Harvard Square - Great atmosphere! Nice selection of beers. Excellent cask conditioned dry stout.

On my 1st trip to Boston recently, was near Harvard and stumbled upon this place for lunch.Although busy, We had fast service,me and my buddy Walt each drank 3 different microbrews and all were great.Had great burgers as well.While we were eating I guess the girl who sat us knew we werent from" Bahstan",the manager came over and asked where we were from, we told him Florida,chatted for awhile. I told him I collect Pint glasses and could I purchase one. He got up and brought us 2 for free. I wish I could remember his name, but a very nice guy. All in all a very good time at John Harvard's, I'm not sure what goes on at night, but lunch was great. I can honestly say as Economic students next to us debated the country's deficit, I felt like the least intelligent person there. Very good lunch good beer, bottom line..

Big sterile suburban brewpub now serving mediocrity and showcasing the local talent. They are able to squeeze out maybe one drinkable beer and that's it. The restaurant is the main draw. Funny how there's so much fun commerce happening in Cambridge by Harvard but not much at all by MIT. Hmmm,...could it be because MIT students actually have to study hard to pass their courses?

I tried the John Harvard brewpub in Washington, DC last summer and was anxious to visit the original pub in Cambridge. The atmosphere was friendly and the stained-glass windows was a classy touch. My friend and I enjoyed lunch, a beer sampler and two pints of their beers: the pale ale and the IPA. Being an IPA fan, I took to their Pacific Coast IPA and found it to be very tasty with plenty of hops. But surprisingly, I found I liked the Pale Ale even better. The other beers were tasty as well. Our service was great and the bartender (Maria) was friendly. The hamburger lunch was excellent.

John Harvard's appears to be a college bar that happens to brew beer, which all comes together to make it noisy crowded pub. Of the six samples, only the stout stood out. If you're hungry, head up the road to Red Bones Barbeque in Somerville for a pulled pork sandwich, it's not Texas barbeque but it's mighty tasty.

Good overall food, beer was average. The milk stout was nasty. I guess I am not a milk stout fan except for the one the Widmer Brothers' produce in cooperation with the Oregon State fermentation sciences department. Good clam chowder. Nice location.

I visited last weekend, and tried a sampler of all their current brews, which included: Apricot Ale (seasonal), Shakespear's Wit (seasonal), Stout, IPA (their best seller), and Nut Brown. The beers, except for the Stout, were all very good -- each showed their character well. The wit was especially good, although it was sort-of in between a hefe-weitzen and a wit in style. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. The appetizers and entrees were all very bland -- safe food that nobody will complain about. I ordered a special chili dish -- c'mon! I know it's Harvard but please.. They need to introduce their chef to a spice rack, or perhaps replace him/her. But for the beer alone, you have to stop here when visiting Harvard Square.
