Located around the corner from the Tucson Marriott and on the street where U of A students hangout, this place is a great location to hang with profs and remember the good old college days of years gone by.
I had the opportunity to visit this place the day it operned during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings and sampled their first tap. So now, every time I'm in town, I stop in to sample the IPA and their seasonal beverages.
The IPA is the way I like IPAs - very hoppy and bitter. The stout on tap is quite good when they have it.
The food is good, not great, and comes in generous portions. The service is friendly and usually attentive. You never know who you will sit next to at the bar - tourists, students, or just outright weird faculty whose bathing habits are questionable.
It's worth a visit.

Sat in the bar area. Great, friendly service from the bartender. Mocha Java Stout was on tap (smooth and rich) with a 7.5 level. Also at 7.5, I tried Ben's IPA, which was highy enjoyable (tasted like Racer 5). Would have had another but I had to drive. The California burger was a nice compliment to both beers.

Tried all the beers but both times we visited, they were out of stout. Price per pint was reasonable and the upper patio at night was fun.

I went during a weekday evening and sat at the bar. Service was good. I had an:
IPA-very good beer, true to the west-coast over-the-top hoppy style. 8% ABV.
Nut Brown- 6% ABV. Malty, sweetish beer the was very drinkable. Not my favorite style.
Raspberry-good for this style.
Pale Ale-lighter beer but nice hoppiness. Not bad.
Overall this place brews good beer but other than the IPA there is nothing that really stands out.

Nice atmosphere, good looking chics, and beer was above average. Loved the chicken quesadillas and the burger.

The upstairs bar is an established hangout on Friday pm for UofA faculty and grad students. All has gone well the last few years until this year 1) kids were banned from going upstairs. This alienated many of us, and repeated efforts have not led to a change in policy. Departmental gater ings are now split up between those with families and those without. 2) the cover charge increaed from $1 to $2, while the free tacos remained the same quality. For a while this change went with some tokens to get $1 off a pint, but that has now disappeared. Moral: don't upset your key customer group, or they will just go across the road instead.

I visited this brewpub on 3-15-04 and had the following brews; Tuscon Blonde, Copperhead Pale Ale, Red Cat Amber, NCA-Ale, Ben's India Pale Ale, Mocha Java Stout & Taylor Jane's Raspberry Ale. The patio area was very enjoyable and the parking was difficult. Pint glasses were available for $10.

Great selection of beer! Parking is a pain. Menu includes good selection of vegetarian entrees. The hostess was totally distracted and inattentive when we arrived at 2 PM.

Across from Gentle Ben's brewpub. Great patio and service with a long list of microbrews on tap. What food I had (pizza) was excellent as was the service. Only complaint was that they didn't carry Nimbus (local brewer).

Was at GB's a couple of days before Christmas, so there weren't any crowds. They had 5 beers on tap with a pretty limited range. I tried all but the blonde and the only beer that I found to be of interest was the stout and it was served ice cold. The bartender who provided very good service was very accomodating by allowing samples since they only had 5 beers on. I wish she would have allowed samples of the food. It was not good, with the exception of a spinach artichoke dip that was pretty good. After having dinner we went outside on the patio where we were promptly ignored by two waitresses who had a total of three tables between the two of them. We took the hint and went across the street to the Frog and the Firkin and excellent pub across the street. Returned to the area 3 times and stayed at the Frog. I love brewpubs and will go out of my way to hit them, but in this case I wouldn't even go back across the street. Do yourself a favor and do the same.

Food and service have steadily declined and the beer is inconsistent in quality, although never particularly remarkable at its best. Location close to campus makes the crowd young, dumb, and collegiate.

We were in town for the football game and went here before the game. It was packed but the service was still good.
Their IPA is very good as was their stout. It seems that the beers have vastly improved since my last visit.

The beers were OK, but they all seemed rather watered down to me - perhaps for the college crowd. After a couple of beers we went across the street to the Nimbus tasting bar - much better beer there.

Is it me or does Gentlebens seem to be on the decline. The atmosphere is horrible and service has steadily diminished from management to servers/bartenders. They've given up on customer sastisfaction. This used to be the place to go.

Okay, I'm a regular at this place. The beer ranges from truly excellent (Mocha Java Stout) to pretty lame (Tucson Blonde), so it kind of depends on your style of choice. The food is overall better than good, although their vegetarian dishes tend to be uninspired. Their specials are occasionally brilliant. Service is generally cheerful and friendly, if not always prompt. Yes, it's a college hangout, but if you go at off-hours, it's a pleasant, reasonably priced place.

Located just a block from the west entrance to the University of Arizona, Gentle Ben's is located in a modern shopping center. Once upon a time is located in a dumpy old building and it was a great place to hang out. The new environment is clean and stale, and it's a haven for frat boys who wouldn't know the difference between an IPA and a Pilsner Lager. The beer is so-so, the burgers are good, and if you want a nice, safe, mediocre experience, this is it. For a true brewpub experience, and more funky fun, try Nimbus, a hard-to-find microbrewery in a southside industrial park. It's worth searching out. Leave Gentle Ben's for the frat boys...

OK the beers here are average, nothing special, except when NCDOUBLE ALE is on, this beer is quite good. They also have a mocha java stout which is nice as well. But basically this is beer made to convert Bud drinkers. Lacks character, and at times taste.

Yeah, it is over-rated. I tried it once again, and left with the same impression I always do. It's meant for the masses, not the connoiseur of beer, food, and service. The patio is nice on spring days, that's about the only reason to go to this place. If it wasn't so close to the college it wouldn't be in business.

I'm a businessman and as such I need my tab/bar bill to NOT be itemized-I like to drink my beer and not have my company know how I spend their money. The beers were very good (IPA, brown ale) to fair (stout). Very slow bar day but there was only one person behind the bar serving the entire restaurant. As such, service was fair to middling. Could this place be overrated? I'll go back again but only as a second choice.
